Sox dumb it up, lose in Oakland again

Oakland could field a band of blind, one-legged, school girls and beat the Sox consistently as long as the games were played at whatever the coliseum is called now. The Sox just know how to lose there, making the stupidest of outs and throwing the stupidester of pitches. There's really nothing else to say.

Well, except for this... Dony Freakin Lucy, you will haunt me forever.

I was at a party tonight...

talking to a Cubs fan while watching baseball. After sitting through yet another fucking Cubs comeback, I also had to see the Twins score and realize that Lirano was dominating in his start and they were raping the Mariners. Then, we both got to watch the Sox spot three runs in the first inning. The Cubs fan was wondering why I was so nervous about the game. He told me that the A’s suck and I told him about how the Sox play against the A’s on the West Coast. He laughed it off…

How many kicks to the nuts was this game?

  • Jeff Cox with another stupid Cora-like blunder.
  • Sox pitchers keep throwing fastballs to Cust since it’s the only pitch he can hit.
  • Dotel making JRE look like Nostradamus.
  • The Sox offense not realize that Huston Street throws the same low and away slider over and over. Keep swinging at it, boys!
  • Knowing that Dony freaking Lucy will never hit a walkoff homer for the Sox like Suzuki did. Great draft pick there.

That may have been the worst night of baseball all season long. Even Hawk was disgusted.

was at the game and refuse to sift through the threads, so i'm probably repeating some.

from our seats on the first-base line, we didn’t have a good view of pitch locations unless they were obviously well outside the zone, so i can’t comment on that.

as for anderson’s attempted ring around the rosey, i don’t have much of a problem with cox on this one. swisher was down 0-2 with two outs and sending anderson forced barton to make what is probably the longest or one of the longest throws he’s ever made while playing first base. maybe cox should have given a bit more weight to anderson’s initial confusion when he reached second, but i just don’t think it was a terrible play.

dotel had a bad outing, but that’s baseball. can’t go too nuts about that. guys will give up home runs. and remember, nostradamus was wrong a remarkable amount of the time (like maybe worse than tona pena jr.). not sure you’re doing jre any favors with that comparison.

i will never understand this obsession over suzuki v. lucy. couldn’t you do this with every gm multiple times in every draft when you use hindsight? regardless, this ain’t quite michael jodan v. sam bowie.

ramirez baserunning = ugly tonight, particularly the second one where it didn’t even look like he was running on first move.

the real issues i had with the game were ozzie’s pitching decisions, which usually don’t leave a whole lot to quarrel with. first, i don’t understand leaving gavin in the game after uribe’s oopsie resulted in thomas reaching a hitter ahead of cust. i know floyd was still clinging (or clenching?) to a shutout, but by the time he faced cust for the third time he was at ~105 pitches (meaning he was toast after the 6th at best regardless) AND easy heat was already warm. i appreciate ozzie giving guys a long rope, but not as much in a place where winning doesn’t come easy and a better option was already warm.

the second pitching issue is bringing ramirez in to start the 9th, even though jenks was warm, because the sox no longer had the lead. we’ve been over the use of jenks in high-leverage, non-save situations before, so that’s all i’m going to say there.

finally, like you, i don’t understand why they didn’t intentionally walk suzuki to at least set up a double play or attempt to induce a strike out or pop out from a far inferior hitter in patterson. moreover, why not do it with ramirez still in the game to face patterson?

oh well, just another game and there’s another chance today. hopefully more missile shots from q! to follow.

At what point in the season is it not "just another game"?

It was a huge game because the Sox need as big of a lead as they can get before they face the Twins for three games at the Twinkiedome in the last week of the season. I think we all know how those three games are going to go…

Here's the good news:

(Which isn’t easy to find after today)

The Sox come back home after this 3-game trip of death and Minnesota goes on a 14-game road trip because of the Republican National Convention. The Twins aren’t exactly a stellar road team, so if the Sox ever want to put some distance between themselves and the Twins, it’ll be in the next few weeks.

Will...I...be...able...to...play...softball...tomorrow?

by BuehrleMan on Aug 16, 2008 7:40 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How about we impeach the coaching staff...

for letting our pitchers pump fastball after fastball to Jack Cust, when it’s the only damn pitch he can hit?

According to game day…

91 MPH fastball from Floyd to Cust = single
92 MPH fastball from Floyd to Cust = walk
92 MPH fastball from Floyd to Cust = homer
94 MPH fastball from Dotel = homer

In the entire game, Cust saw a total of 1 slider, 2 changeups, 3 curveballs, and a whopping 14 fastballs.

Cust’s two homers were both on 0-2 counts and every pitch in those two AB’s was a fastball. Both homers came on 0-2 pitches right over the middle of the plate. Essentially, 0-2 meatballs.

Something else that made no sense...

With a runner on third base and only one out, why the hell didn’t Ozzie IBB Suzuki to make the double play a possibility? Patterson was due up and I know he has the speed to break up a DP but he will also strike out on bad pitches just like his brother. Ozzie fears Eric Patterson as much as Matt Stairs. Also, Cox waving Anderson home from first base on a throw that got away was so hilariously stupid.

I fell asleep after the 5th...and yet somehow I suspected I would awake to this.

I know reliever performance is considered volatile from year-to-year, but the Sox bullpen has been volatile from week-to-week. It’s very frustrating. It’s hard for me to hate Dotel (although I am working on that) — I mean, consider what the pen would look like without his signing — but I have never seen a guy with stuff this good, whom other teams can’t hit .200 against have blow up like he does. He has a .194 BAA, a 75/24 K/BB ratio and yet a 3.46 ERA. He’s the Javier Vazquez of relief pitchers.

Getting angry makes them play better! Grrrrrr!

Never really saw the point in getting enraged over something I can’t control. At the end of the day, the Sox aren’t going to give a crap whether I’ve had a good day, so I try to keep the feelings as mutual as possible. Unless it’s the playoffs.

I love baseball, I love the process, I love it when it works, find it interesting when it fails. I’d rather spend more time trying to figure out why something happened and move on, and if that’s “making excuses,” well I’m thankful for the lower blood pressure.

I just don’t see much purpose in rehashing failures everybody saw and punching them up with various invectives. Failure’s interesting.

Failure is a part of any sport, and it just makes you appreciate the wins that much more. But I’ve never seen that much sense in getting so pissed off about a loss.

just kidding. anyway, i guess what i’m wondering is how many people find seattle’s position with regards to this situation resonable/unreasonable/completely idiotic/smart…whatever.

and by people i guess i mean what other GMs/front office people might think, but also just what a generally knowledgeable fan thinks.

So it was mainly to screw over the Sox...

Bastards. The Twins must have been extremely confident that the Mariners wanted someone for Washburn, otherwise, they could have been screwed over with that salary for 2009 if the Mariners just let the Twins have him. That salary wouldn’t kill the Sox but it damn sure would kill the Twins.

buster olney just insisted on baseball tonight

that the twins did want washburn in order to move a starter to the pen to shore it up.
i think i’m gonna roll for disbelief on that.
