Ultimately, a final decision to promote Poreda, which still stands as a bit of a long shot, will deal with his mental preparedness as much as the physical side. The White Sox want a pitcher who can handle the playoff pressure, along with the pressure of playing in Chicago, even if it's in a secondary role.
"Let's just say you move him from high A to Double-A or from Double-A to Triple-A," Cooper explained. "If a guy is mentally tough and he goes out there and doesn't do well, it's not going to be like he thinks he stinks and you lose him forever.
"When a guy is mentally tough, it's a lesser risk to ever move him. I'm open to anything. We've got options and we will figure them out and go from there.
"He's a part of our future," added Cooper of Poreda. "We just aren't sure if the future is next Tuesday or later this year."

Where does it say he'll be in the rotation?
He can be part of “our future” in the pen.

The title of the article is...
“Poreda may be option for fifth starter
Pitching coach not sure if 21-year-old is ready for Majors”
I also put a question mark at the end of my Fanshot title.

I don't blame you...
It was hard to tell that the source was WhiteSox.com with the way I posted it.
Either way, it’s interesting. No one is headed to the D.L. so Broadway is not eligible for the start on Tuesday. It seems like the Sox want to use Richard as a reliever since he was bad as a starter. If RIchard was going to start Tuesday, the Sox wouldn’t have called him up before this weekend’s series. So it seems like it will be someone else from the minors…

i don't necessarily agree with your logic re: richards
calling up richard when they did made sense by adding a lefty to the pen for oakland (not to mention that he could get multiple side sessions with coop, including the one at the cell the day before he was officially added to the roster). you use richard a lot, and you go with carrasco. and vice versa. doesn’t preclude the sox calling someone up, of course, but it seems richard has the inside track at this point considering he hasn’t been used.

Agreed...
If the Sox get by the next two days without using Richard, he probably starts on Tuesday. Although, it would be a little funny for the Sox to give Richard another start when Broadway was more productive in his first start, not that he is even an option for Tuesday.
Well, the Mariners two best hitters are lefties — Raul Ibanez and Ichiro. And they also have Jeff Clement, Bryan LaHair, and Jeremy Reed who are lefties. So I guess there could be five lefties in the Mariners lineup. Not sure how much that helps Richard though because he has just been hammered in general.

it would help him considering he was fine against lefties.

By the way...
Poreda last pitched for the Barons on August 14th. The Tuesday game against the Mariners would be 5 days of rest.
White Sox: For Tuesday’s start, the White Sox could choose to go with Clayton Richard, called up from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Friday’s game in Oakland, but he will work out of the bullpen this weekend if necessary. They have the option of calling up another pitcher from the Minors or going with a bullpen by committee against the Mariners. Manager Ozzie Guillen probably won’t decide on Tuesday’s starter until Monday.

other salient points from the article
But is Poreda ready to compete in the Majors after a mere 36 games pitched in the Minors? According to White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper, parts of Poreda’s game are there.
“His fastball is ready,” said Cooper of Poreda. "His fastball velocity is ready, but we have to work on the command of that pitch and certainly his secondary pitches.
"Whether he’s ready or not, that’s to be determined. We are in a pennant race, and it’s very difficult to dip down to the Double-A thing. But we’ve done it before with [Wilson] Alvarez, [Mark] Buehrle.
….
In regard to Poreda, Cooper added that he has talked to J.R. Perdew, the pitching coach for Birmingham, and heard words of solid progress being made by Poreda with the secondary pitches. Cooper also talked to Perdew about Poreda’s makeup, receiving positive reports in that category, also.

Clayton Richard pitched an inning last night...
Does this mean that he won’t be starting on Tuesday?

looked a heck of a lot like a side session to me.
though i don’t know what clayton likes to do on his off days i don’t think it precludes him from starting tuesday.

Richard?
Tidbits
Guillen will wait until after Monday’s game to decide upon Tuesday night’s starter. Clayton Richard pitched one perfect inning of relief Sunday, striking out two. He threw only 13 pitches, making him a likely candidate to fill the vacancy. … Although no official word has been given for Seattle’s starter on Wednesday, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey looks to be the choice.

I sure hope it's Dickey
Did you see his game last night? 4 wild pitches and a passed ball in 1 inning. I dont think he even got 1 out before he was removed.

That's a knuckleballer for you.
When they’re good they’re really good, but when they’re bad they’re awful.
Of course, in Dickey’s case, the “bad” happens a lot more often than the “good”.
