Something Completely Different
As many of you probably figured out by my lack of comments or the stagnant and sometimes superfluous gamethreads on the front page, I didn't really see much of this weekend's action. After Friday night's debacle, I didn't think I would be missing much. Turns out I was wrong.
- The starting pitching was great--alright, good enough to win--in all of the games. '
- Javier Vazquez might have found his '07 form, after using his '06 blueprints for the last couple of months.
- Matt Thornton did the right thing and let the coaching staff know when he wasn't available, then dominated upon his return.
- Juan Uribe continues to be a large contributor in Crede's absence.
- Q! is still dreamy. And I hear he likes Carl Weathers' movies too. Just like you!
The weekend could have been better. It's only human nature to look back at Friday and think What Could Have Been, but the Sox won a series in Oakland. They won two in a row there for the first time since 2000. That's a nice change from recent history. And we all know, Change Is Beautiful.

is that the Mr. Belvidere guy?
I’m not good with cultural references…
In two weeks they will win 7 or 8 in a row and you all will have 10 inch boners.
I have also been meditating heavily on the essence of Carl, and his relation to Q.
And I have no doubt in my mind that Q’s inspiration for greatness comes from none other than our good friend, and cheerleader for change, Carl Weathers.
You think Q doesn’t watch Change is Beautiful as his pre-game ritual? You think Q doesn’t give himself a big smile in the mirror each and every day; knowing he is about to step onto the diamond and make universal shifts every time his bat smiles? You are wrong. Q is one with Carl.
Whom, by the way, I now respect in ways I never knew possible.
Carl’s purity is only rivaled by his black green thumb.
And yes, if we make the post-season, we should definitely kill Carl Weathers in sacrifice to the baseball gods.

For whatever reason, I can no longer

Angels / Rays
Good series starts tonight. I expect this to be the beginning of the Rays returning somewhat to the pack. Then again I thought they would drop 2 of 3 in Texas.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
rays prediction from tdogg. treading in dangerous waters. they'll get sonnanstined.
Matchup: Angels (76-56) at Rays (75-48), 7:10 p.m. ET
Probable Starters: Jon Garland (152 IP, 4.68 RA, 1.44 WHIP, 68 K) vs. Andy Sonnanstine (147, 4.71, 1.31, 92)
Pythagorean Record: Los Angeles, 67-55 (576 RS, 514 RA); Tampa Bay, 69-54 (564 RS, 491 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Los Angeles, #5; Tampa Bay, #3
Prospectus: Via Hit List, this is the one game to watch today if you have just three hours to spare, as it’s the matchup featuring two teams from the top five taking each other on. The Rays’ Sonnanstine has been criticized for not being as productive as his record, though that’s a bit misleading when you take a deeper look into the numbers. Yes, his 4.35 ERA seems a bit high for a pitcher leading the team in wins, but if Sonnanstine’s ERA was where it is supposed to be, no one would be questioning his performance. The young righty’s expected ERA is 3.50, an impressive figure resulting from two things: first, Sonnanstine’s BABIP is .323, well above his expected figure of .298 (derived from his 17.8 percent liner rate). That’s surprising, given the quality of the defense in Tampa Bay this year, but Sonnanstine has received the short end of the defensive stick as far as the team’s starters goes. Second, he has stranded just 66.4 percent of his runners on base, a well below average mark. This may partially be his own doing, and not just the defense, as he’s given up a .300/.326/.447 line with runners on and a .277/.302/.445 line with none on base, but if the Rays’ fielders were getting to more of the balls in play, there wouldn’t be a discussion to have in the first place. Either way, Sonnanstine has been a better pitcher than his ERA indicates if for no other reason than the BABIP disparity, and if the Rays’ defense played as well behind him as it did for their other pitchers, we would see a significant change in his ERA and opponent lines.

Hey I wouldnt doubt it
Do the opposite of me with the Rays. As I said last week with their schedule and injuries they should slide somewhat. I know JRE was complaining about the WC but we will have some fun ass series coming up.
Rays/ White Sox 8/22-8/24
Rays/Boston 9/8-9/10
Rays/Boston 9/15-9/17
Rays/Twins 9/18-9/21
Boston/Chicago 9/29-9/31
and of course Twins/Chicago 9/23-9/25
Wildcard will be just as exciting.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
Agreed -
Rays are playing way over their heads from an expected performance (W/L) standpoint, but they are on a mission from God (since they cut the “Devil” from their moniker, they get props from the Lord). You’d be losing a lot of jack betting against the Rays this year.

A team full of young & athletic players would seem more likely to play above their heads than most other teams. I just wonder how well statistics work in regards to prediction for a team so young, with a somewhat unique talent set is all. I would think it’s harder to judge a team like the Rays than it is the White Sox.

or WARP, if that's more your style.
this is probably going to be one of those years that a guy who isn’t even close to the tops (at least in the eyes of the various stats seamheads like) will win. the “best” players are pretty much all on teams that aren’t in contention or, if they are, simply aren’t getting much play (see, e.g., joe mauer). unless someone really lights it up down the stretch, which is certainly how players in the past have won, the vote will probably be pretty fractured.

Do y'all know what the logic is behind using VORP v. WPA as the criterion?
Why so serious?
by reardenmettle on Aug 18, 2008 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions
i am not the person to answer
not knowing much about the basis for either, i think WARP is more easily interpretable for the casual fan because the measure is ‘wins’. for vorp, its “The number of runs contributed beyond what a replacement-level player at the same position would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances”. i think ‘wins’ has more impact to me than runs. feel free to rip…
by onlysoxfaninboston on Aug 18, 2008 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions
though i will say that i don't like WPA that well because
it isn’t environment-neutralized. obviously that isn’t the point of WPA, but if what we’re trying to do is compare, then it kind of helps.
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
wpa is basically useless.
“clutch” barely exists, if at all, and no player can control when he comes up and in what situations. we already reward players with the stat of rbi. wpa isn’t much better than that.
paging mr. poreda. paging mr. aaron poreda. your seat in the left field bullpen is ready.
well, you have adjustments going on for league and year in WARP. and defense is included, as well. plus positional adjustments. depends on which WAR/WARP you're using, too.

he's one of the reasons i thought the indians would be so good.
obviously, he’s been beyond stellar this year and no one could have predicted a 60 VORP to this date. but he’s just had injury problems and stuff the last couple years and should always have been a good #2 or so. he’s experiencing a classic age 29(ish) peak season for a pitcher but, after the last few years, he deserves a 20 win campaign and a cy young. though francisco “i just stack up the counting stats” rodriguez will be a sexy choice for that award.

Obvious stud that gets a boatload but the Brewers are running him into the ground (as they should). I want to ask will any reasonable gm take this into consideration before giving him 6 years with an option for 7, but I suppose the Yankees are desperate.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
i don't think i'd be overly concerned with the workload.
cc is a guy who can handle it. that sets aside, of course, whether one should give any pitcher 5+ years. i don’t do that for anyone. but, if you’re of the ilk who does give out such deals, i don’t think this years workload should do much to change your opinion of whether you’d give him such a contract.

Brock D (Shakopee, MN): What needs more help: The Twins Bullpen or the White Sox Rotation?
Joe Sheehan: The White Sox have enough depth to patch rotation issues—free Charlie Haeger! I’m not sure if the Twins can say the same about their bullpen, although persistent rumors that Pat Neshek might come back provide hope. It’s interesting in that the Twins, for a few years, had these great no-name pens; now, they have Joe Nathan and dreams of Neshek.

Joe Sheehan: Probably. He has tools and absolutely no idea what he’s doing with them. He reminds me of Shawon Dunston, or the infield version of Jeff Francaeiour. There’s almost no way to be a star walking twice a month.
paging mr. poreda. paging mr. aaron poreda. your seat in the left field bullpen is ready.
Well, there is a big difference between a corner player with a 280/310/460 line
and a league average or better SS with that line. I hope that Ramirez has enough ability to play a good SS, then his lack of patience is mitigated.
Don't we have to admit there is some hope right?
It is his first year he may learn a little more patience with a successful year. Part of me feels like its this that puts him in the frame of mind that he’s getting his swings in regardless. I mean 2 walks a month would be insane.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
i think he was referring to those players' inability to maximize their talent and achieve anything near what their ceiling should be.
he compared alexei to two average to below average players. while the expectations for a guy who signed a cheap deal shouldn’t have outsized expectations atached to him (average would be great, in my opinion), it’s not exactly flattering to have yourself compared to dunston.
paging mr. poreda. paging mr. aaron poreda. your seat in the left field bullpen is ready.
If things finish as they are, Dunston's career high OPS+ for a "full" season
Will be equal to Ramirez’ this year. It’s not a compliment, but it was clearly just an offhand one. I don’t think he means much by it more than that they are a couple of free swingers from the middle infield with some pop.
no. what he meant was that dunston and francoeur were/are busts.
obviously the expectations for both of those players were and should have been much higher than alexei’s are. but being told you’re like shawon dunston is saying you should have been a great player and instead are a meh one. it’s probably true for alexei; we’d probably like to call him raw. the problem (if there is one) is that what we’re seeing, especially at his age, may well be the “finished” product. would have been interesting to see what alexei could have been if he got to the states quicker.

that’s what should happen before 25-27. but considering the circumstances surrounding him, there’s at least some reason for optimism.

Why does it appear that folks
keeping looking for something negative to say about Rameriz? as Larry alluded he is not some 1st round draft pick that got a shit load of money. I don’t want to downplay not walking (he has to get better at it) but it does seem like nitpicking. I have read this stuff on other sites also.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
i suppose it's because there is both a lot of good and a lot of bad with alexei.
and the fact that he just came over from cuba means that there isn’t a whole lot of info on a 26 year old major league starter. i think it’s just natural to speculate on a unique case like his. we don’t have a lot of progression to base predictions off of. people seem to cover the spectrum on how raw vs. how finished he is.
You're on thin fucking ice my pedigree chums, and I shall be under it when it breaks. Now, fuck off.
i don't really get that impression so i don't know what to tell you there
but a league average MI is pretty awesome with or without the walks
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
yeah, i'm not going to be concerned about the walking part.
i don’t think he’s going to walk much. maybe he’ll get a bit more patient but he just seems like a freeswinger who makes contact. he makes good enough, and powerful enough, contact and has enough speed that it will be fine for now and the foreseeable (length of contract) future. it would be interesting to see how some of this other tools would have developed had he come to the US earlier. the shawon dunston comp is an interesting one.
paging mr. poreda. paging mr. aaron poreda. your seat in the left field bullpen is ready.
i was just looking at his wikipedia page (dunston's)
and they had the quote from bill james that i’ve been trying to remember since i saw what joe said.
Bill James noted that Dunston was an “eternal rookie, a player who continued until the end of his career to make rookie mistakes.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawon_Dunston
while alexei is still a “rookie” in the majors, he does certainly make some stupid errors, just like dunston did.
paging mr. poreda. paging mr. aaron poreda. your seat in the left field bullpen is ready.
I agree...
Ramirez and Dunston makes for an interesting comp.
And if Ramirez turns out to have a career similar to Dunston’s (post-age-25) career, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. A serviceable player who shows flashes of being better than that would be more than a lot of people expected from Ramirez.

pretty dumb def of "bust"
Discipline is a tool, regardless of how traditional “tools” are defined in baseball. Saying Ramirez is a “bust” because he has the “tools” to be better is stupid. No, he’s missing a very big tool: the ability to take a fucking walk.
WTF is “supposed to be a great player” even mean? Nothing, it’s a dumb thing scouts say when they like he a guys ass looks in his uniform.
yeah. it means nothing.
eyes rolling. i’m sure the cubs just took a dart to the eligibles when they were picking 1:1 and came up with dunston.
here’s a newsflash, i guess. if you’re picked first overall, you should do better than post a lifetime OPS+ of 89.

bj surhoff was another interesting guy to me.
and i wondered if his career arc didn’t show, albeit perhaps to a somewhat exaggerated level, the “toll” it takes to be a catcher. after he was moved from catcher to various other positions in his late 20s, he had a very good stretch of years from about 30-35. i suppose he could have also just been fulfilling the stereotype of the late blooming catcher, too, even though he didn’t play there anymore.

dave roberts was a guy who never played in the minors. i think the legend is that he played in the majors the same day he was drafted. not sure if that’s true. however, probably a poster child for how the minors are a good idea, even for the top pick, no?
delmon young and upton should both get better. bill almon just wasn’t that good; supplanted by one ozzie smith a couple years after he made it to the bigs. some older sox fans might remember when he played a couple years for the sox and did quite well in one of them. abner is (rightly) considered the worst #1 pick ever, though matt bush will likely overtake him. chilcott is another catcher who had serious injuries.
interesting to see how many of these shitty picks belong to the padres.

I remember Shawn Abner was The Answer
for the Mets. It was entertaining for years to see how much he sucked, since I hate the Mets. And it was always precious to see Dunston disappoint because of the big build-up the Scrubs gave him. The Chelexei comp is interesting re: talent assessment vs. expecation of performance. Che will far exceed expecations because here were none (well, some of us thought he might have that "something:). Dunston will forever be labeled a disappointment because of his Brooklyn (NewYawk hype, anyone?) high school numbers and how they did not translate to his MLB performance.
Just goes to show – expect little, hope for the best, and don’t overpay. And don’t draft a guy whose name sounds/looks like Shawn.

“Gordon Beckham, SS, Low-A Kannapolis (White Sox)
The eighth overall pick in June, Beckham didn’t sign until last week, and he hadn’t played for nearly two months, so a slow start could easily be excused. No excuses are necessary though (so much for the rust factor), as in his first weekend as a pro he went 7-for-11 with a double, a home run, four walks, and no strikeouts. Beckham has all the tools and abilities to be a star-level player, combining contact skills with above-average power, and just enough in the way of both speed and arm strength to become at least an average shortstop. Just as importantly, all of his skills are advanced enough to project a quick rise to the majors, and Beckham should be up in Double-A by mid-2009, if not earlier.”

Look back with Nate Silver (a little bored I guess)
Chicago White Sox
2007 Record: 72-90, fourth place
2007 Attendance: 2.7 million, fifth in the AL
2007 Payroll: $109 million, fifth in baseball
Key Free Agents (2007): SS-R Juan Uribe (club option)
Key Free Agents (2008): DH-L Jim Thome, 3B-R Joe Crede, RHP Jon Garland
Key Long-Term Commitments: LHP Mark Buehrle, $14M/year through 2010; 1B-R Paul Konerko, $12M/year through 2010; RHP Javier Vazquez, $11.5M/year through 2010; RF-R Jermaine Dye, $11M/year through 2009, plus 2010 mutual option; C-L A.J. Pierzynski, $6.25M/year through 2010
Key Ready-Now Youngsters: 3B/LF-R Josh Fields, OF-L Ryan Sweeney, LHP Gio Gonzalez
Needs: 1. At least one big bat for LF/CF; 2. 2B; 3. SS
What They Should Do: Strong Buy. The White Sox picked their direction during the season when they re-signed both Mark Buehrle and Jermaine Dye to long-term contracts rather than trading them for prospects. Having done so, the team has little choice but to complete the cycle and field a team that should have a median expectation somewhere in the 88-win range. That scenario will probably require signing at least two "name" free agents. The alternative is being stuck in the middle, and spending a lot of money while undermining the reservoir of support they built up in 2005.
What They Will Do: Weak Buy. When you combine Jerry Reinsdorf and Kenny Williams, no direction would be entirely surprising, but this is one of those cases where going 72-90 might ultimately have been better than 80-82, because it underscores the fact that the team must spend money to improve. The guess here is that the White Sox go far but not quite far enough, trading Jon Garland for an offensive piece, and signing one mid-tier free agent.
Actually not that bad Nate….
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.

Reliever Al Reyes declined his outright assignment to Durham and is now a free agent.
Reyes, 38, was designated on Aug. 9 when the Rays acquired reliever Chad Bradford. Reyes had missed 55 games this season while spending two stints on the disabled list. In 26 games this season, Reyes boasted a 4.37 ERA.
Reyes made a huge impact with the Rays last season, making the club as a non-roster invitee and saving 26 games in 30 chances.
