I don't mind this.
I think he’s been victimized by bad luck and bad defense thus far. I don’t mind giving him another shot.

and i think he's been victimized by "not ready for the major leagues-ness"

I think there's chocolate in my peanut butter.
I saw an advertisement for a chocolate chip cookie company that said, "Changing the world, one chip at a time." And I thought of you. Changing the world, one chip at a time. Chip, chip, chip, chip.
You're beautiful. Change is beautiful.

I guess we'll see.
I didn’t see the start against KC, but he looked decent the other three times out.
Richard or Broadway, it’s flip a coin time, IMO.

Dj is probably the best choice but I believe the sentiment
on Richard is too harsh.

i don't know why. he wasn't major league ready when he was called up the first time. nothing's changed.

We'll see Larry
I just disagree at this point. I don’t think his stuff is that far off. Young pitching learning to avoid big innings is a part of life but to me he seems past the minors right now.

that ridiculously low babip in the minors certainly says otherwise.
his numbers this year are a mirage.

Okay Larry
So the .250 is ridiculous but .330 the other way isn’t? Get serious he has made improvement. A 4 to 1 walk ratio in AA/AAA this year is nothing to sneeze at for any prospect. Hell even getting rocked in the show he was 13:4 KK/BB. I don’t share your confidence that he doesn’t have it yet.

improved, sure. no one is denying that. quit going after the strawman.
but his pitches aren’t fully developed yet. he’s not ready to start regularly at the major league level. that’s not a knock on a player. it’s more a sad statement on the the sox minor league system.

I don't believe I have overstated the evaluation of Richard on the board
Its real easy to look at his hits against and make these assumptions. I saw mistakes of location and confidence issues compounded by weak D, imo I didn’t really see pitches not fully developed. What specifically are you referring to? Honest question.

what are mistakes of location if not pitches not being fully developed?
the difference between minor league pitchers (especially AA/AAA ones) and major league pitchers is not so much stuff but ability to locate and command that stuff on a consistent basis.

i didn't understand what you were getting at with that babip comparison.
i assumed you knew that babips were higher in the minors, for reasons i’m sure you can figure out. .330 is quite normal for the southern league. about a .320, iirc, is normal for aaa. bp or somewhere did an analysis of minor league babips so you can look them up if you want. suffice to say, .250 is quite low and is even more aberrant in the minors. his babips prior to this year were normal for his level.

I agree with you Jer
I think he has been victimized a bit. More so in the first 2 starts. There was a bit of dear in headlights in his 3rd start but I haven’t given up on him for this year.

by Option27 on Aug 18, 2008 6:39 PM CDT 0 recs
By the way
His ERA is 9.64 but his FIP is 4.95 which kind of illustrates the victimized point.

but has been lit up since. Tabasco deserves it.

sure. but there's a reason line drive rate is used to determine a hitters' expected babip. hard hit balls are more likely to be hits. and he served up quite a few of those.

He did show flashes of skill, I’m okay with one more shot.. if we had a better option, I’d say go for it. Problem is we don’t.

it is the mariners. and it is felix. it's not like sending someone else out there would make a huge difference.
if he can’t be successful against kc and the mariners, the sox will certainly know what they have.

In the 4 previous starts against the Sox, King Felix has an ERA of ~5
27 hits, 26 strikeouts in 23.1 innings, so he hasn’t owned the Sox thus far in his career and this shouldn’t be a “tip your cap before the game even starts” situation.
King Felix does have 5 quality starts in his last 7 games (ERA 3.56), so it looks like he’s been pitching well. If the Sox can show some patience at the plate (big, big if there, I know) and get to the Seattle bullpen, they certainly have a good shot…which seems to be a general rule of thumb for winning just about any game, I suppose. Hernandez has been walking his fair share of batters, even if he is a winner that knows how to win games like Kenwo suggests, so I don’t think my analysis is quite as retarded as it may have sounded.
Interesting that fat Toby (6 PA) has a better OPS against King Felix than AJ (8 PA). Fuck it, I’d start him, although I don’t know how that would affect the “handling of the pitching staff” aspect of the game.
Let’s hope Richard shows us something good this evening. GO SOX!
this isn't hard. you live in a port city. and you're a slut. do the math. -larry

I'd rather have seen DJ or Egbert get the call
Richard clearly seems unwilling to throw anything other fastballs. I’m guessing that he lacks confidence in his breaking stuff. So I have to agree with larry that he doesn’t have the secondary pitches to be in the bigs yet. The Sox really, really need to find another starter — I think DJ is the only real option at this point.
