Late first round and he has/had a major-league curve. They probably hoped he’d still add a couple of MPH and have a 90 MPH fastball. The Padres drafted the guy people wanted the Sox to take and haven’t gotten anything out of him. And the Twins drafted Garza. I hate the Twins.
Anyway, the draft pick the Sox made the year following Broadway was much worse.

Obviously, I have no inside sources....
But I recall reading fluff at the time about the Sox hoping Broadway would “fill out some more” and gain some velocity. It may just have been junk for public consumption, maybe they didn’t really believe it. It’s probably more likely that they thought he could throw 90/91 at the time, but like Masset, Broadway left 4 MPH down in Texas….

and masset got it back this year. seriously, let's stop listening to ssh about that and use some facts.
anyone who watched masset pitch this year – i hear he did that for the sox a few times – should know how fast he was throwing and, if they don’t pay attention to that, it can be looked up easily.
at any rate, like i said, that would be one of the reasons those guys were fired. broadway pretty much was what he was going to be when he was drafted. which is fine, i guess. by mid 2006, he was about as developed as he was going to get. unfortunately, the sox didn’t really end up needing what he provides so spending a first round pick on him didn’t really turn out that great. he’ll be fine in the masset role next year.

for future reference, which part of "it can be looked up easily" was it that was hard for you to wrap your mind around?

I wasn't expecting Masset to throw 98 MPH consistently...
but when I hear the phrase “a tick below Jenks”, I’m assuming Kenny wasn’t talking about the present version of Jenks who can’t throw over 95 MPH. I was expecting Masset to throw around 95 – 96 consistently, not 93 – 94.
Oh well, doesn’t matter much now…

expectations should be tempered about velocities every time you hear them.
you think buehrle’s fastest fastball is really 91-92? of course not. he can throw faster than that. there’s no point, however, if you can’t locate it. that was masset’s primary problem when he reared back for the 96+ this year. so he takes a little off (see clayton richard for another guy who has done this, probably, like masset, at cooper’s urging). and a pitcher usually loses a little velocity as they age. could be age etc. could be because of “cleaner” mechanics (taking the “violence” out of a delivery often takes out some of the speed). never buy the top end velocity. you will always be disappointed.
