The Phillies wanted Mark Kotsay, but came up short. They’re settling for a more limited player here, but one who could be a nice fit in their ballpark. Stairs will get the occasional start in right field against righties. He’ll be used as a pinch-hitter the rest of the time. The Blue Jays will call up Travis Snider to fill the open spot.

I’m sure KW would be the first to admit it. That’s why we overhauled our scouting department. The Wilder fiasco obviously doesn’t help, when you have friends working for you, things like that can happen. I don’t think this miss is related to Wilder, but the fact he had scouts who weren’t completely focused on their jobs did nothing to help the situation. Going forward I really think we will do better in the draft and internationally. We got a world series out of the last group though, so you can only complain about it so much.

putting your best reliever in the highest leverage situations instead of saving them for a possible save situation. I don’t know how much Nathan has pitched lately (probably a lot) but I was surprised that he didn’t pitch tonight. What good is saving your best reliever for a save if you never actually get that opportunity?

The probable matchups looked much worse earlier today.

I hope they learned on Dice-K. Walks, walks, and more walks. But they do have to come up with the big hits.

I don’t know what to expect from Pauley other than the fact that he has sucked balls thus far in the majors.

The Sox always seem to struggle early against Wakefield but then they rock him in the later innings.

Brandon McCarthy was effective again Thursday, limiting the Angels to two runs — one earned — in six innings.
McCarthy has a 1.80 ERA in his two starts. We’d still have a hard time trusting him in AL-only leagues, but the Rangers have reason to be encouraged. They need him to be a big part of their rotation next year.
