MLB official reveals obstruction call incorrect

It turns out Tampa Bay had a legitimate gripe about Sunday's obstruction call against third baseman Willy Aybar that helped the the White Sox to a 5-4 victory.

Mike Port, Major League Baseball's vice president of umpiring, Thursday told the St. Petersburg Times that it was "a missed call" that led to the Sox's A.J. Pierzynski reaching third base and eventually scoring the winning run.

Port said umpire Doug Eddings believed he saw Pierzynski "impeded more than he was" by Aybar, who was chasing Pierzynski in a rundown.

"Looking back at that occurrence, for the first and last time, it was a missed call," Port said told the Times. "And it was not because Doug Eddings, an umpire with 10 years experience, and 10 before that in the minor leagues, didn't know the application of the rule, but just that in the moment in applying the rule, he saw something he thought was more than it turned out to be."

Eddings was "the first to admit" he missed the call and told MLB officials after reviewing replays, Port told the Times.

It's sad to think that the Sox should have been swept...

but if the bullpen didn’t pitch like total ass, the Sox could have swept the Rays.

That's how you have to look at the playoffs

If Linebrink is back all of a sudden we have to feel a lot better about our chances in a 5 or 7 game series.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 29, 2008 8:45 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Game was tied when AJ did his thing, so it's a bit strong to say they should have been swept.

Everyone forgets, but the same was true in the case of AJ/Eddings I in the ’05 ALCS — it was a tie game and the Sox were at home. In both cases, the odds favored the Sox anyway.

They just had a special on the guy on ESPN yesterday

Seems like the type to do it, a much less brash Mark Cuban I guess. Was hanging out in one of the ballpark stores during the home opener chatting it up with fans. If only we could get Ozzie to post on here, guy loves the internet.

Everyone is looking pretty bad after this divorce.

No high road taken on any side in this one.

Mariotti talking about how the internet is the future after trashing blogs, and web reporters just months ago. The guy doesn’t allow for comments on his articles that were online, and he tries to claim newspaper is dead after he just signed a 3 year contract with them a couple months ago. I don’t know how he thinks he can work on the web when he is Hawk Harrelson like sensitive.

Suntimes could just point all this out and take the high road, but instead feel the need to rip the guy apart and look like they are no better than he is.

Chris Deluca goes the easy route and interviews a bunch of White Sox players, making our team look shallow in the process. I guess it’s one way to draw attention to your paper.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 29, 2008 8:49 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Apparently...

Mariotti was just despised by Sun-Times employees. They couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell him how they really feel.

Who would think worst of Sox players in anything they had to say about Jay Mariotti. High road and him should not be in the same sentence.

That is hilarious. I especially enjoyed this back-handed compliment, which I have edited slightly for SSS readers:

Since Jay quit on Tuesday, turning to stab at the paper that supported him for 17 years and spit on the colleagues who tolerated his presence, there has been much ill will expressed. But I want to go on record that, speaking for myself and my colleagues, we bear him no malice whatsoever, or try not to. We can’t honestly say that we are glad we met him, but we pray that Q! speeds him to his next assignment, and that Q! blesses, nurtures, strengthens, supports and comforts all those who come in contact with him in the future.

Well, a positive is that it's benefiting the offense

Konerko has his OPS+ all the way up to 95, mainly because he’s been kicking some serious ass in August. I wouldn’t attribute that all to Griffey, but I think it helps that Konerko can sit against some of the tougher righties and we can still replace him with a average-or-slightly-above bat.

The question is whether the offensive options that Griffey gives Ozzie outweigh Griffey’s obvious defensive liabilities.

Speaking of which, I wonder what combo he goes with tonight. Boston has those odd dimensions in center so I think I’d rather see Swisher + Konerko, but I guess we’ll see in a few hours.

Matchup: White Sox (76-57) at Red Sox (77-56), 7:05 p.m. ET
Probable Starters: Javier Vazquez (171 IP, 4.47 RA, 1.28 WHIP, 163 K) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (132 2/3, 3.19, 1.38, 117)
Pythagorean Record: Chicago, 77-56 (687 RS, 579 RA); Boston, 78-55 (690 RS, 568 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Chicago, #4; Boston, #2
Prospectus: The White Sox make their first trip of the year to Fenway for a series that could preview an October matchup. Vazquez will be looking to move past his last, frustrating outing; the right-hander was cruising past Tampa Bay at US Cellular Field, retiring the first 17 batters to face him, but with two outs in the top of the sixth the Rays peppered Vazquez with three straight hits to push a run across, and two innings later loaded the bases with none out to force him from the game, eventually scoring four times against the White Sox bullpen to steal away the win. Forgive Sox fans if they experienced a bad sense of deja vu while watching the latter innings of that game unfold, for Vazquez’s outing was the second time in the past three weeks that a Sox pitcher got the first 17 outs before having the game unravel. In the fourth and final game of the last series between the White Sox and Red Sox on August 11 in Chicago, John Danks lost his perfect game when he nailed Jacoby Ellsbury in the back with two outs in the sixth, lost his no-hitter in the seventh when Kevin Youkilis singled with one out, and lost his shutout—and the game—when J.D. Drew doubled home two runs three batters later. Chicago also had two near no-hitters earlier in the season, both thrown by Gavin Floyd, who went 7 1/3 without allowing a safety against Detroit, and then 8 1/3 versus Minnesota, but the White Sox managed to win both of those games.

Matsuzaka has been moved up in the rotation to start tonight’s series opener in place of Josh Beckett, who instead of taking the mound will be in Alabama having Dr. James Andrews examine his right elbow. (Matsuzaka is still on regular rest due to Boston’s offday on Monday.)

I find that holiday weekends leave me rather dry.

Between men being with their families, and the lower level of overall stress among clientele (stress seems to increase my sales – I was booked solid after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, for example..also when the market isn’t doing so hot), I get to kick back and enjoy the holiday.

Neil Steinberg apparently also admires Eck:

OK, “admire” is a little mild — I love the guy, albeit in a manly, heterosexual fashion. How could you not? First of all, he’s such a good player and so short and covered with dirt. I don’t even care about sports, generally, and yet I can watch and enjoy Eckstein play, because he’s so short, covered with dirt and infused with such skill and passion — and experience (and dirt); he’s right there, in the thick of it — that he draws you into caring about a game you never cared about playing on a team you don’t follow. Because he’s short. And also dirty.

Personally, he’s a short, dirty stand-up guy. When I hit a rough patch a while back, and some friends shunned me, Eck sought me out to make sure I was OK. He’s often on the road, adding to his vast experience and dirtiness, so when he makes a rare appearance in the pressbox, everybody’s just happy that he’s here — they gather around him, admiringly, choking back the cloud of dust and debris that follows him everywhere.

Short and dirty, like the grinder he has always been — having played the game adds a true depth to his work — Eck exudes a kind of sleepy, tousled, short, dirty Gary Cooper hero quality, as he lopes into the pressbox, sits down and shoots the breeze.

Did I say he is handsome? I was sitting with him at an outdoor restaurant on St. Clair one summer day not too long ago, when I noticed that young women were pausing as they strode by, smiling at me, their eyes sparkling and keen, which is not usual in my case. I sat up a little straighter, thinking, perhaps it’s my new tie. . . . Then I realized — duh! — I was sitting next to David Eckstein. They weren’t smiling at me, they were smiling at him. Because he’s short and covered with dirt.

That might make some guys jealous — the jealousy in this business borders on insanity in some guys. But not in Eck or me. I laughed it off — a man without a sense of humor about himself is a soul damned.

It helps that I’ve been to Eck’s house. A short, dirty mansion, really. At a party, jammed with short, dirty people, who gathered in the living room to hear Eck’s rock band. I remember looking around the room, taking in his many short, dirty friends, his big, short, dirty family — he has four beautiful, short, dirty kids — and thinking what a rich and multifaceted, short and dirty life he is blessed with, as the center of this adoring, short, dirty circle.

I think that’s what keeps him grounded and humble and short and dirty — being a baseball player is only a small part of who he is. Eck isn’t conceited — and a guy who played with Darin Erstad, as Eck has, certainly might be. No, Eck would rather be at one of his own kids’ games — he never missed one if he could help it — than playing a kid’s game himself, earning money he doesn’t need.
