Season Over; Anything on the Farm? or White Sox Minor League Autopsy
of course not. duh. kenny traded away everything of any worth, sucks at drafting, and doesn't sign foreign players who are under 33.
and when he does draft a decent player, they end up hurt. you know, like kris honel. or aaron poreda. yeah, yeah. i know. he hasn't gotten hurt. yet. but carlos gomez saw that one video, everyone read his article and believed it, so it must be true.
so after another outing of 6+ IP, few hits, no walks, and lots of Ks, it's time to call him up, KW. after all, he couldn't be any worse than logan, could he?

and we all know what the problem with the white sox is.
pitching you say? no. speed, fucknut. speed doesn’t slump. speed doesn’t fall asleep. speed wins game. and, interestingly enough, speed has been statistically proven by seamheads – working 18 hour days in their mom’s basement – to be highly correlative with a low RA. for which team you ask? who gives a shit. you know you like to watch guys run around the bases like headless chickens. even the most diehard seamhead gets a hard-on watching juan pierre play. sure, they’ll tell you they don’t. but they live in their mom’s basement. who the fuck does that other than guys who get hard-ons from watching guys play sports?
so it’s about time the sox called up brad eldred. i bet you thought he was slow. wrong. stole his second base tonight. jerry “i can steal you fifty bases” owens had his thumb in his ass. plus, for you earl weaver types, brad probably leads the international league in home runs. i say probably because i don’t care enough to look it up. prove me wrong, FN. this team only has, like, i don’t, fifteen players who should only play first or dh. what’s one more. screw it. put eldred in center. i hear he’s got great instincts and is healthy. according to kenny, that’s all you need.

He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

He does keep the ball in the yard
180 IP and only 6 HR allowed over the last 2 years, not sure if it is a sustainable ‘skill’ for him though, but is the main reason he has kept the ERA lower than the other numbers suggest it should be.

Very informative
Having never seen him or even read much of a scouting report, this is helpful. Not sure if he used all of the arm angles as a starter, but might lead to some credence for the vast improvement upon moving to the bullpen.

egbert scouting report from jim
He has a funky, deceptive delivery in that when he begins his stride toward the plate after his leg kick, he extends his right arm back towards center field, then hides it behind his back, almost swinging it in the direction of first base. The hitter doesn’t seem the ball again until it’s past his shoulder, as his delivery is short-armed.His sinker registered at 88 in the sixth, and he got a backwards K with a four-seamer at 90 m.p.h. on the inside corner. His changeup had a considerable amount of left-to-right break and was clocked at 77, and his slowed down his curve to 71. He wasn’t afraid to double up on his breaking ball.
I’m guessing he had trouble hitting his spots - he was missing low in the sixth - but his pitches seem to have more life on them than Lance Broadway’s arsenal, though Broadway did a much better job against the same Syracuse lineup.

That great news about Upchurch.
I was a bit concerned that he hadnt pitched for a while and figured they were prepping him to start. Sure enough he starts and does a good job, the walks arent a big concern since hes just out of high school and it will take him a little while to gain control.

re: Poreda and his development of a second pitch? Or are we to presume that at this point he’s still (more or less) doing his thing with that upper-90s fastball?

second pitch? the misinformation about this guy is stunning.
it’s the development of a third pitch, his changeup, that’s the issue.

So he throws a slider/slurve/curve?
Forgive my ignorance—I’ve paid little attention to much of the farm system for a good while now. Is it (his breaking ball) considered a plus pitch? A quick glance at MinorLeagueBaseball’s scouting report (which may or may not be a good source) gave me this:
“Slider: He has one, but it’s way behind the fastball.”

Not to mention, when you have a fastball that is a solid
70 on the scouting scale you can still have a “slider that is way behind the fastball”, but still be an effective pitch.

goldstein beckham update
8. Chicago White Sox: Gordon Beckham, SS, University of Georgia
Status: Unsigned
Agent: SFX
Negotiations: The fact that Beckham is unsigned going into the final days is a mild surprise. What has likely happened here, is that his advisors accurately evaluated the market for top-flight college players as inflating significantly, and they decided to hold Beckham back in order to ride the coattails of the situation and reap the rewards.
Prediction: Something around $3-$4.5 million, with a 50/50 shot at a major league deal.

sickels' review of his top 20 white sox prospects
1) Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Grade B+
Traded to Oakland. 4.24 ERA with 128/61 K/BB in 123 innings for Triple-A Sacramento, 106 hits allowed. Not bad at all for the PCL. A fine prospect.
2) Fautino De Los Santos, RHP, Grade B+
Traded to Oakland. Tommy John.
3) Aaron Poreda, LHP, Grade B+
3.43 ERA with 55/17 K/BB in 66 innings since promotion to Double-A. Meeting expectations.
4) Jack Egbert, RHP, Grade B-
4.89 ERA with 99/33 K/BB in 107 innings, 110 hits allowed at Triple-A Charlotte. Capable of better.
5) Ryan Sweeney, OF, Grade C+
.293/.344/.388 for Oakland. Lack of power is going to make him a bench guy.
6) Lance Broadway, RHP, Grade C+
4.68 ERA with 96/43 K/BB in 138 innings in Triple-A, 160 hits allowed. Stuff may be too marginal for big success.

Inquiry about Egbert
Despite his somewhat poor ERA, it doesn’t seem like Egbert is having that bad of a year at Charlotte. His K/BB is still a healthy 3-to-1 and his GB rate is above 50%. It appears that the big thing is he’s giving up more homers per flyball this season, which (I’d guess) could partly be attributed to pitching at Charlotte. Oddly enough, even though he’s given up nine more homers at home, his GB/FB is higher at home. His ERA is also lower at home, so I’m not really sure what to make of that…
I guess I’m just wanting a general analysis about Egbert’s prospects going forward. Before the season, I’m pretty sure that ZiPS projected something like a 4.60 ERA for Egbert. Have these past 100+ innings at Charlotte taken away that ‘back-of-the-rotation-starter-in-the-near-future’ shine, or should he still be in-house candidate number one for the next starter to get an extended look at the big league level?

John Shelby Jr., OF, High-A Winston-Salem (White Sox)
Shelby isn’t a great prospect, but at this point a good prospect is more than enough in a rather horrible White Sox system. Shelby went deep in all three of his games over the weekend, giving him 13 on the year to go with a .285/.327/.489 batting line and 28 stolen bases in 33 attempts. An infielder in college, Shelby was converted to the outfield last year, but has disappointed in center so far, leaving many to wonder if he’ll become enough of a hitter for a corner. If he’s similar to anyone, it’s his father (without the switch-hitting skills), and that should be good for some kind of career.

He appears to be a good prospect at first glance but his BB-to-K rate is Korey Patterson-like. I think the Mariners would be interested in him. They could use a CF prospect after trading away Adam Jones.

Minor League Transactions
Chicago White Sox
Recalled: RHP Adam Russell
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Clayton Richard
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Nick Mahin
Reinstated from DL: RHP Nathan Jones
Richard, 24, showed the same fine command in the big leagues (11 strikeouts, four walks in 13 innings) that he did in the minors, but the results did not follow. He went 0-2, 10.38 in three starts for the White Sox, perhaps because he was around the strike zone too much, as evidenced by 25 hits allowed and three home runs. Chicago’s eighth-round pick out of Michigan in 2005, Richard is a strike-thrower and a fast worker to the extreme, so he’ll be afforded other opportunities. He returns to Triple-A Charlotte, where he went 6-0, 2.45 with 33-4 K-BB in 44 innings before his callup. Had he not been called up in the first place, Richard would be in Beijing right now preparing to start for Team USA in the Olympics.
