Joe Crede is DONE with the White Sox
The placard above Joe Crede's locker no longer reads "Joe Crede."
In fact, there isn't a placard above Joe Crede's locker these days.
The space is blank - as empty as the locker itself. Crede's belongings have been removed from the locker. The Sox aren't talking, but word is the organization, sick of the way Scott Boras seems to have his hand in Crede's drawn-out rehab - some believe he would rather see his client sit than have him risk another injury - has severed ties.
Crede is scheduled to get another "second opinion" on his back later this week.

What a way to go
I like the guy (excruciating pop-ups forgiven) so in a way it sucks that he’ll be moving on…but business is business.
Is it Fields at 3B next year with Uribe as insurance? I wouldn’t mind that at all.

He can catch on somewhere maybe for a starting gig.

If Giants fans wonder why their team is in such dismal shape, last night was a microcosm of it. This organization hasn’t shown any ability to look past a single game, much less past a season and towards, say, potential stability and success. Last night wasn’t even a joke. It was a farce.
To those of you who will feel compelled to write in and say "Tim didn’t want to come out," my response is pretty simple…My four year old wants to eat a bunch of ice cream too. It’s kind of my job to make sure he doesn’t. And it’s kind of Bochy’s, Sabean’s, Baer’s, and the entire occupancy of the Giants front office’s job to keep completely moronic things from happening.
Clearly, they’re not up to the task.

i will not miss the constant speculation about his health.
when he played well everyone said “well, he’s healthy” and when he played like shit everyone said “his back must be hurting him”.
does anyone really know how good of a player he is?
personally, i think he is pretty much exactly what we saw this year, a slightly below average hitter with pretty good pop, a bad obp, who’s streaky offensively but plays better than average defense.
was he part of some good memories? yes. am i gonna miss him? not really.

Meh, it's time
The constant injuries were a drag, and 2005 heroics can only get you so far (see Konerko, Paulie). I’m gonna miss his awesome dives on defense and pop outs on offense, but I think the Sox can manage with Uribe/Fields next year.

Sox and Twins tied for first place...
Fuck you, Denard Span…
Denard Span hit two homers to lead the Twins 12-2 over the Orioles in the first part of a doubleheader Saturday.
Span hit a solo shot in the third inning and a three-run blast in the ninth. Justin Morneau, Jason Kubel, Brian Buscher, and Carlos Gomez also drove in runs. Gomez actually finished with four RBI and the Twins coasted behind an offensive explosion. Span is hitting .306 with six home runs and 40 RBI this season.

Deserves Better
Seems to me Crede deserved better from his career and from some of these posts. He was a good player for us for years. In 05 and 06, he was clearly one of the best third basemen in the league, with above average offense and defense. Those guys don’t grow on trees. Throw in the Joe Clutch heroics and he is one of the players that really helped the Sox win games in the 00s.
Of course, the biggest thing was the back injury. Those are tough for anyone, much less a third baseman. Its just idle speculation, but I’d bet that if Crede had a normal spine, he’d be a multiple all-star. Yes, the back kept him from playing every day and over the last two seasons, it has been frustrating to see him miss so many games, but from 03-06, he was a consistent regular and I think people have forgotten that to some degree.
One of the things that endears Crede to me is that he is the only regular on the team who was drafted and brought up by the Sox. Its a strange kind of tribute to Kenny that the Sox are comprised almost entirely of free agents or trades. Crede was different. I remember reading about him in Baseball America and getting excited about his call-ups in 01 and 02 and 03. He collected all kinds of best prospect or best defender awards in the minors so we knew he had a chance. He was going to be Ventura’s heir at third and, while he never reached those heights, he was a fine player.
Anyway, I’m sorry to see him go. He’s never gotten a really big payday (by ball player standards) and Boras appears to be looking out for him as best he can. I’d guess he’ll have to take an incentive heavy deal or a one-year make good contract for someone, but maybe with a Winter of rehab and some good medical exams, he can score a good deal. He’s got the right agent for that.
Good luck Joe. Thanks for wearing the colors.

I and most posters appreciate Joe's contributions
But he really let Boras lead him in the road direction (imo). Maybe his back situation could have turned out for the better if he handled it right away.

Ya Gotta Stay Healthy
I agree with your sentiment, but “the bottom line” (I hate that phrase) is you’re not doing your team any good if you can’t stay on the field. As much as I hate to say it – it’s time for the Sox to move in a new direction at third base.

no, wouldn't be fixed.
this is one of those situations where espn doesn’t rule. the teams and mlb absolutely needs to get at least one of these games in to prevent a complete mess at the end of the regular season. they’ll start whenever they can start.
when it starts will depend upon when (whether?) they can get the field dry enough. no way it starts at 1:05. 3pm is probably a good rough estimate of the earliest possible. it’s going to be sloppy out there no matter what. i certainly fear for the health of the players.

if the forecast is clear for the rest of the night (i'll defer to you as to whether the weather cooperates)
they might do that, simply because picking a clear time to start the game is better for the players, especially the pitchers, and also because it would help espn. basically, it’s a win-win for everyone. but they’re going to do everything to get at least one game in. if they think there’s a possibility for delays later in the evening, i don’t think they’d do that.
keep in mind, starting a game four hours late is really, really not ideal for the players (unless they’ve known all along that the game really wouldn’t start until around then). we’ll probably have a better idea in the next couple hours what the plans are.
it’s also not unusual for espn’s game to get pushed back from the 7:05 start in the case of a late ending DH. the game last week between the mets and phillies started about 8pm central, iirc, because of that.
of paramount importance is getting a single game in, minimum.

the regular season has to end before the playoffs start. and it’s rather likely it wouldn’t if the sox have to makeup three games with the tigers.

right now that single game is a tall order.
it’s worse out right now than it has been all weekend. it’s basically been a steady light rain/heavy drizzle all weekend, but it’s really been coming down this morning in the loop. i would speculate that the players have already been told that this game won’t start until at least 4 or 5. if the rain stopped right now, they still could not make a 1:00 first pitch.
i hadn’t really given it much thought until now, but the sox season could very well be washed away with this rain. unless we play lights out for the next week and a half, the regular season won’t end until after everyone else. that means no setting up the rotation and no rest, which if the sox were to make the playoffs would really put them behind the 8-ball.

ozzie guillen q & a
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8071
DL: What are your views on pitch counts and pitcher usage?
OG: Pitch counts are important when the game is not on the line. But if the game is on the line and I see that the guy is throwing the ball well, that’s a guy I’m going to leave in. In the minor league system they don’t let the guys pitch very much, and then all of a sudden they’re in the big leagues and they can only pitch six innings; that’s it. You can’t ask them for any more. But I always go with my gut feeling. One thing, my priority as a manager is to make sure I keep those pitchers healthy for as long as I can—don’t overuse them. I want to make sure that the guys pitching on my ballclub are there in September and October, that they’re ready to complete the last month of the season. To me, that’s important.
DL: How much does your pitching coach, Don Cooper, influence your decisions when it comes to pitcher usage?
OG: I pull the trigger. It’s easy for me, because he’s been my pitching coach for five years. If I want a lefty warming up, I don’t even have to tell him that I want this guy or that guy; he knows exactly what I want. That makes it easy for me.
DL: Are you concerned with how much your relievers are working in the bullpen, regardless of whether they come into the game?
OG: You have to be careful, and that’s Don Cooper’s job, to make sure to tell me that we didn’t bring this guy into the game, but he was hot the last two games. Then we have to take into consideration that we may not use him the next day.

Wow, my daughter was ecstatic when she was able to get his autgraph early this year. I was even impressed as the ushers were telling people to move it and he took his time, especially with the littler kids.
Loved the way he played when he was healthy. Just seemed like a good hardworking guy.
Unfortunately he has BoreAss for an agent, that coupled with his health issues have really hurt the team going into the last few years.
