As larry rightly points out, 3 in the L column
with 7 (?) to play is huge. Not saying it’s a lock, but they would literally have to blow it.
They’re certainly capable of doing so, but so what? They make the playoffs or they don’t.
Of course I’m into every pitch of every remaining game, but considering our best projections before this marathon started, who, besides the aSSHole can complain?
Note to the former Cheat: if he’s negative enough to reference in a game recap, why is he still allowed to pollute the site?

Twins basically have to sweep...
if they want to win the division. That’s certainly a possibility (terrible things have happened in that ballpark before), but the Sox are definitely in the driver’s seat. If the Sox win even one game, they still are in control going into the final weekend, and if they win two or more, it’s all over.
I don’t know what it means to “lose hope” once they fall behind. Do the hitters fall victim to despair and are unable to make solid contact?

Very important to take at least one
or you can envision the collar tightening a bit. “Mo” would be with the Twinkerbelles if they sweep the Sox (no guarantee, since the Sox would only be down 1/2 game, but the trend wold not be our friend).
One game – not imperative, but surely needed. Two games, sing Sniff ‘n the Tears ("Driver’s Seat", for those not coming of age in the ’70’s).

Just one of three in Minny...
Subjectively speaking, I think Cabrera’s comments make sense as the offense has looked rather ‘lethargic’ (again — completely subjective) the past week or two. But lethargic usually means not scoring runs and as such I’m not sure that a statement like his holds much water going forward. They’re slumping a bit, and it doesn’t help that the offense’s best player is out, but even without Q the Sox still have an average-ish (maybe a tad below) offense.
So yeah… get one in the POS dome. That’s pretty reasonable.
BTW, it was nice to see dominant Jenks return — good fastball, good curve and that nice little cutter/slider. His performance was very encouraging.

Depends on what you mean by "need to win"...

If you mean they literally need to win the series, no. Unless the Sox get swept, they’ll probably still win the division.

The scenario you describe basically forces the Twins to sweep in the final weekend. Sweeps are pretty rare, even at home against 70-win teams.
Any scenario where the Twins have to win their series AND the Sox have to lose their series means the Sox probably win the division.

I was a little surprised at how much the Cubbies celebrated yesterday. Though it may have been moreso for the fans (spraying them with champagne=aiding to frat boy’s date rapes), winning a division shouldn’t matter much to them. That being said, I still would love to see the Sox have some fun after clinching the Central, perhaps burning an effigy of Punto.

No team in baseball is invincible this year. I think we will start seeing starters go longer and or MLB shorten the season due to the inept bull-pens of EVERY team. The Cubs look strong but they will be exposed if their starters can’t go more than 6 innings, same for the Angels, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox/Twins and the other playoff bound NL teams (who are irrelevant).

Hey cheat we won.
Can’t we get a recap or something to reflect the fact that we just won a huge game in a pennant race?! Headlining grumbling from the previous loss over the more recent win?To paraphrase Tdogg you guys need some Prozac!
I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

I meant to make this comment when I posted it
The ’05 Sox went 2 months (from late July to late September) without winning a game in which they trailed by 2 runs.
Which I complained about loudly that season.

If memory serves correct,
of the 11 playoff wins, only three were comebacks. 2 four run deficits (Gm2 Bos and Gm3 Hou) and one two run(Gm 2 Hou). Nevertheless, that is a fascinating fact about that team considering nobody remembers any of their losses or any of their shortcomings.

The JOE CREDE! game in September against CLE
was the first game in 2 months that they came back from a deficit of more than one

I definitely believe it
That team wasn’t known for its ability to consistently put up crooked numbers

Was the 2005 team just not this year's Angels...with probably more power in the lineup?

So first Buehrle with the quote about needing a 2.5 game lead over the Twins...
because he expects to lose at the Twinkiedome and now this? Definitely doesn’t seem like they expect to win every night out there.

Nothing like a team that is missing the playoffs acting like they won the World Series...
This is pathetic.

I love how the seven year old is bawling
The kid probably thinks this is the last game the Yankees are ever playing

If that were true
I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Ding ding ding
The Sox came within a Teahen’s eyelash of tying Saturday’s game in the ninth and setting themselves up for a sweep. For me, though, that highlighted their live-by-the-homer-die-by-anything-less mindset this season.
Perhaps Wise’s first-inning baserunning yesterday provides a glint of a new dimension for this year’s team, as aberrational as it was, certainly since about May. A reminder of what teams like Minnesota and Tampa Bay have been doing to the Sox this year.

Hogwash
The team has come back several times in home games. They simply are not a good road team. This whole year its been the same roller coaster, and I cannot understand why anyone thinks after 140+ games and weakened by injuries they will somehow begin to play better on the road. When they set out on this trip I felt like 4-6 was likely, attainable and would be enough. That is still the case.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
