"[W]e don't act like we are in first place. We don't look like the team to beat. It seems like we are hoping for a win every day, and I don't think that that's the right attitude. Once the other team scores before us, that's what it seems like.

he's right

Still, a playoff berth will make me really happy, regardless of what happens in the playoffs.

I’ll be at the Thursday Twins/Sox game.

i suppose it's interesting to hear it from a player.

but this isn’t anything groundbreaking. tallest midget contest.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!!!

Everyone get down on their knees tonight.........

and say a little (or maybe a medium sized) prayer for the Sox bullpen. Call in some chits.

As larry rightly points out, 3 in the L column

with 7 (?) to play is huge. Not saying it’s a lock, but they would literally have to blow it.
They’re certainly capable of doing so, but so what? They make the playoffs or they don’t.
Of course I’m into every pitch of every remaining game, but considering our best projections before this marathon started, who, besides the aSSHole can complain?
Note to the former Cheat: if he’s negative enough to reference in a game recap, why is he still allowed to pollute the site?

In two weeks they will win 7 or 8 in a row and you all will have 10 inch boners.

Twins basically have to sweep...

if they want to win the division. That’s certainly a possibility (terrible things have happened in that ballpark before), but the Sox are definitely in the driver’s seat. If the Sox win even one game, they still are in control going into the final weekend, and if they win two or more, it’s all over.

I don’t know what it means to “lose hope” once they fall behind. Do the hitters fall victim to despair and are unable to make solid contact?

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 21, 2008 6:09 PM CDT   0 recs

it's about saying "it's not my fault they quit"

heading into free agency.

Maybe "losing hope"...

is why Dye and Griffey look like they have concrete shoes on while they’re running around out there. They’re too despondent to run fast.

Very important to take at least one

or you can envision the collar tightening a bit. “Mo” would be with the Twinkerbelles if they sweep the Sox (no guarantee, since the Sox would only be down 1/2 game, but the trend wold not be our friend).

One game – not imperative, but surely needed. Two games, sing Sniff ‘n the Tears ("Driver’s Seat", for those not coming of age in the ’70’s).

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Just one of three in Minny...

Subjectively speaking, I think Cabrera’s comments make sense as the offense has looked rather ‘lethargic’ (again — completely subjective) the past week or two. But lethargic usually means not scoring runs and as such I’m not sure that a statement like his holds much water going forward. They’re slumping a bit, and it doesn’t help that the offense’s best player is out, but even without Q the Sox still have an average-ish (maybe a tad below) offense.

So yeah… get one in the POS dome. That’s pretty reasonable.

BTW, it was nice to see dominant Jenks return — good fastball, good curve and that nice little cutter/slider. His performance was very encouraging.

by CWSKeith on Sep 21, 2008 6:22 PM CDT   0 recs

No, Jenks sucks. Get rid of him. He can't close.

I think we really caught a break by getting to miss Liriano....

he looked very good today and he would have faced us without us having the benefit of having seen him earlier in the year.

I am looking forward to having Javy back on regular rest Tuesday night…….

The attitude can’t be let’s just steal 1 of 3…..we need to win the series.

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 6:29 PM CDT   0 recs

Depends on what you mean by "need to win"...

the series.

If you mean they literally need to win the series, no. Unless the Sox get swept, they’ll probably still win the division.

If you mean it would be bad atmospherically if the Twins win the series, well, maybe.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 21, 2008 6:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Say the Twins win 2 of 3...then it's at 1.5.....

I think it’s then very realistic to think that they sweep KC…..and CLE takes 2 of 3 from us….then we fight for survival against Det….then hopefully force the playoff against MIN….

by larry on Sep 21, 2008 6:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"Very realistic"?

The scenario you describe basically forces the Twins to sweep in the final weekend. Sweeps are pretty rare, even at home against 70-win teams.

Any scenario where the Twins have to win their series AND the Sox have to lose their series means the Sox probably win the division.

Was anyone else surprised at how much Tampa celebrated clinching a playoff spot?

I understand that the organization has been through a lot and this is a big step in the right direction, but they’re still in a tight race for the division. Certainly grabbing a spot in the playoffs is nothing to scoff at. It seemed like it was a bit over the top.

by El Duque's Raft on Sep 21, 2008 6:53 PM CDT   0 recs

First playoff berth in franchise history?

Means a little don’t you think?

I was a little surprised at how much the Cubbies celebrated yesterday. Though it may have been moreso for the fans (spraying them with champagne=aiding to frat boy’s date rapes), winning a division shouldn’t matter much to them. That being said, I still would love to see the Sox have some fun after clinching the Central, perhaps burning an effigy of Punto.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"

by Ozzie Montana on Sep 21, 2008 7:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No I agree, it does

I just thought it was a bit over the top considering the division is still on the line. Maybe it’s more like what larry said and teams really don’t care what they win as long as they’re in.

by El Duque's Raft on Sep 21, 2008 7:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i think that's the case.

now, if they celebrate as much/more if and when they clinch the division, i’ll be with you.

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 7:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

For Baldelli?

I’m something of a believer in trading relievers at their peak, because they’re so volatile, but I wouldn’t give up anything of value for Baldelli. He’d be worth a flyer as a free agent, but I’m not convinced that he’ll ever be productive and healthy for any length of time.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 21, 2008 7:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Rocco is a FA...not sure....

definitely enough young talent in that organization to find a match for Bobby…..they need a proven closer and of course will not sign KROD…..

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 7:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Zobrist, Sonnanstine, C Bradford, and a

significant AA or AAA prospect for Bobby would do it for me.

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 7:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It would for me, too.

I don’t think it would do it for the Rays, though.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 21, 2008 7:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it would.....

Bradford means nothing to them….but gives us another veteran arm in our pen.

Sonnanstine has had a nice season…..but they can just plug in Price to go with Kaz, Shields, Jackson, etc…

Zobrist isn’t that valuable to them either…

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 7:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yea i would give up jenks

for Sonnanstine straight up

by Jbasic89 on Sep 21, 2008 8:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Kennedy is due to make about 3 mil or so next year.....and the Cards will dump him...most Sox would

have to pay is about a mil….and he’s had a couple of down years….but I think he’s a pretty decent 9 hitter and has a decent glove.

by stanchar on Sep 21, 2008 7:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They already have Chris Getz.

There’s no reason to bring in the 2B version of Darin Erstad.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 21, 2008 7:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh yes there is

This team lacks hustle.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. by Ozzie Montana on Sep 21, 2008 7:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i like the idea.

eminently disposable if getz outplays him and wins the job. adam is a good glove to have, especially with my reservations about ramirez at SS.
