Around SBN: UF's Brandon Spikes Is Suspending Himself

Nick Blackburn did not pitch well on Wednesday night. But White Sox' hitters were unable to make him pay for what could have been his third straight shellacking. Ozzie is tired of it, and he's not going to go out of his way to praise a pitcher who is made to look good by the dormant Sox offense.

"I don't give credit to the guys that don't deserve credit,'' Guillen said of Blackburn. "Believe me, I give credit to the pitcher when they deserve it. We didn't get the clutch hit, it wasn't because of the way he pitched.''

Yep, Blackburn threw junk over the plate and hung a lot of pitches...

I’m glad Ozzie is saying this, not that it will do any good.

But I’m sure the offense will do better against Slowey tomorrow. Afterall, sweeps are like the hardest thing in baseball to do. It’s even hard to sweep a bad team like the Royals.

I don't worry about baseball...

I’m in college. I have concerns beyond 25 men tossing a ball around a dome. I enjoy it, I watch it, I root for the Sox and I spend a whole hell of a lot of time reading about it, but I’m not going to sit around and fret all day. If we win tonight, great. If we lose, shit. Life goes on.

by Craig Grebeck on Sep 25, 2008 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course life goes on

but if you get pissed when your team loses, victory is so much sweeter. Not caring about losing is a Cubs fan mentality. The Sox aren’t going to ruin your life, but you should still care for the games as a true fan.

I care about the games...

I am not going to throw myself into a tizzy because we lost. It doesn’t mean I don’t care. Sure, victory may be sweeter if losses make you kick holes in the wall.

Living past 45 is something I’m shooting for.

2 things,

1. In ’05, I would have been very, very, very, very pissed and hurt had we not made the playoffs. We were consistently in the top couple of teams in MLB. We were really, really good.

This year we are not that good, never (except for a few small streaks) have been. We should make the playoffs (statistically, it’s still true). If we’re not, it was a season that was better than myself and 90%+ ever expected.

2. A recent (and only in my lifetime) World Series win puts a lot of salve on perspective.

Que sera, sera.

I think we've been through this before

Statistically sweeps are unlikely — you shouldn’t expect them to happen in general, which is NOT THE SAME as saying a sweep will not happen.

Moreover, at this point with one game left to play, the statistical likelihood of a team sweeping a 3 game series has no impact on the chances of the Twins completing a sweep tonight (that’s like thinking that a bad run in a casino has to stop because long bad runs are unlikely — Gambler’s Fallacy).

The chances of the Twins completing a sweep tonight are the same as the chances of them winning this one game.

But I think you know all that, and for some reason just choose to twist people’s words because you are pissed the Sox are losing and you just want to point out that the Sox are as lousy of a team as you said they were. No one I know said that there was no way the Sox wouldn’t get swept. So stop pretending like that’s what anyone said.

Not that I'm amazing at probability

but yeah. Not exactly. The Twins, like they’ve been for every game so far, will be favored to win. 60% is the high end of that. Each game is more or less an independent event (barring a few carryover issues like injuries and bullpen usage).

nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team

Quotes for the day...

“The great thing about baseball is that there’s a crisis every day.” ~Gabe Paul

"Give me a White Sox fan any day. There’s a team that has hosed its fans more completely than nearly any other, and that includes two terms under the best and most fan-friendly owner in history, Bill Veeck.

Do you hear them whining endlessly about how God wants them to suffer? Do they bore you with tales of Shoeless Joe Jackson, or Luke Appling, or Wild Bill Dietrich, and how each one has cursed them from beyond the grave? Do they go on and on about Arnold Rothstein and Charlie Comiskey and Chick Gandil and how they robbed their great grandfather of a two-day bender back in ’19?

Of course not. They say, "The Sox? They stink. Another beer over here, Hap.‘’ They don’t long-suffer, and if they do, they don’t do it loud enough for the rest of the neighborhood to hear. " — Ray Ratto

I was always fond of both

“If there is any justice in this world, to be a White Sox fan frees a man from any other form of penance.” Bill Veeck

and this Nike ad from right before the WS in 05

"There are two baseball teams in Chicago.

One is loved not just in Chicago, but nationally. A fan base as far and wide as this great country. Then you have this other team in the Southside. Whose fan base is just the Southside.

The Southside White Sox are not a popular team. You don’t see kids wearing their baseball caps in N.Y. and L.A. and London. They are blue collar. Nothing fancy. No frills. Just a bunch of small ballers and outcasts that found a hom eon the other side of town.

They are a team of their people and that’s the way they play- with all heart and more heart and just when you think they’ve given you all the heart they have, they give you a little more. That’s the Southside for you.

So when you’re watching this Series you’re not just watching a baseball team. You’re watching the collective soul of a few hundred-thousand people on one side of town.

World, meet the Southside White Sox"

by vince_ on Sep 25, 2008 9:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Here is what I believe.

Q’s injury should not have been terribly detrimental to this team.

Sure, he was our best hitter, but there was a time when our 1-9 batters (give or take a couple) could get the job done. We didn’t NEED Q, for all intents and purposes. When he was benched for forearm soreness, our offense continued to dominate.

However, the need for Q has become apparent. He has been gone since the first week of September, and we are all aware of what September has looked like.

Q’s absence has not only removed a big bat from our line-up, but it has sucked the soul out of the team.

Watching them play each night is like observing at a dead body in a coffin – you recognize the figures, but something definable is absent.

I cried a lot on September 5th (Black Friday) when Q’s wrist news broke. I even wrote a fanpost that night to ease my mind (and maybe others’).

I loved to believe that the team could carry on, and maybe that spark is still on the verge of being lit (runnnnning out of time here, fellas!)….my hope hangs on til the last fucking pitch….(not to say my purple blanket and kool-aid will not be pressed, mixed, and ready)….

But at the root of it all, Q took the team’s soul and all the magic with him.

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

Matchup: White Sox (86-71) at Twins (86-72), 7:10 p.m. CT

Probable Starters: Gavin Floyd (194 2/3 IP, 4.67 RA, 1.24 WHIP, 133 K) vs. Kevin Slowey (156 2/3, 3.91, 1.14, 120)
Pythagorean Record: Chicago, 86-71 (777 RS, 696 RA); Minnesota, 87-71 (813 RS, 726 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Chicago, #7; Minnesota, #12
Prospectus: This is the one race left in the American League with some drama attached to it—as much as Rays fans may want the division title, calling their race to remain ahead of the Red Sox dramatic is overdoing it, seeing as they already have a seat in October reserved for them. This is also the final game between these two on the schedule, and with the White Sox losing the first two games of the series, they have seen their lead cut to just a half-game. Things won’t get any easier for the Sox this weekend, as they’ll face off against the Indians for a three-game set; during the first half, that was the stuff that cakewalks were made of, but with the Tribe posting a 38-26 record (and plus-36 run differential) since the All-Star break to get their record back to .500 just in time to try for a winning season, the White Sox may have their work cut out for them.

As far as tonight’s game goes though, the implications are huge for Minnesota’s own chances. Their playoff odds sit at 38.4 percent against the White Sox 61.6; with the wild card coming out of the AL East, it’s win or miss October for both of these clubs. If they were to lose tonight, giving the Pale Hose a 1½-game lead in the Central, their weekend against the Royals would become that much more difficult. After all, the Twins are one back in the loss column to the White Sox, and Chicago may have to play a makeup game against the Tigers that could factor into the division race; if the Twins were to lose tonight, that would make the White Sox’s job easier, while a Twin win would not only put Chicago behind, it would mean we would get a chance to see some Monday regular-season baseball with playoff implications. The teams have been evenly matched all year, with the White Sox winning eight and the Twins taking nine of the 17, with Minnesota winning the last three, and five of six during the second half of the season. Look no further than Chicago’s inability to sustain their first-half success against their rivals for the reason they are in this position tonight.

No, I suspect they are not.

Keep in mind, even if the Sox lose tonight, they still control their own destiny.

BP’s odds apparently do not take into account the fact that the Sox are weak, disturbed and do not care about winning while the Twins are mentally strong, stalwart and cutthroat competitors. Go figure.

Not only would a short-center be implemented….

But we should have an exclusive bunt-fielder….just hanging out on the grass, between the pitcher and the plate.

And an additional man (I’m thinking Thome since he’s not doing much else) who is there solely to beat the shit out of Punto whenever he is in the basepath.

The outcomes of the first two games mean that tonight’s contest takes on a season’s worth of importance to the two squads. Right now, the Sox still have an edge on the Twins—they hold a 61.6 percent chance of winning the division, and the Twins are at 38.4 percent. That number doesn’t mean much, though, because we know that tonight one of the teams has to win, and the other lose.

If White Sox win: White Sox 86.4 percent, Twins 13.6 percent
If Twins win: Twins 62.6 percent, White Sox 37.4 percent

This may be the biggest game of the season in terms of playoff expectation; it’s certainly the biggest game left between contenders, short of a potential one-game playoff next week. If the White Sox win, they become about a 7-1 favorite to hang on and win the the division. If they lose, the Twins swing to about a 3-2 favorite; I suspect that’s even a bit low, as the system isn’t capturing that this Twins team is better than the “full-season” version that was leading off Carlos Gomez, playing Michael Cuddyer, and starting Livan Hernandez.

In any case, tonight’s game is must-see baseball. With Gavin Floyd facing off against Kevin Slowey, the pitching matchup is even, although the Sox could benefit from Slowey being a fly-ball pitcher, one who’s also a bit homer-prone. They also have a very fresh bullpen, with neither Matt Thornton nor Bobby Jenks having pitched since Sunday. Really, though, the game is a coin flip, and one with tens of millions of dollars on the line.

doesn't the accuracy of this statement depend a bit on how you define a choke?

it seems that you define a choke as losing any critical game or series of games, regardless of how the games actually play out.

others might define a choke as failing to perform due to an inability to deal with pressure.

unrelated note...this too funny not to pass along

Police Allege Flatulence Battery

SOUTH CHARLESTON, West Virginia (AP) — A West Virginia man who police said passed gas and fanned it toward a patrol officer has been charged with battery on a police officer.

Jose A. Cruz, 34, of Clarksburg was pulled over early Tuesday for driving without headlights, police said. According to the criminal complaint, Cruz smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and failed three field sobriety tests before he was handcuffed and taken to a police station for a Breathalyzer test.

As Patrolman T.E. Parsons prepared the machine, Cruz scooted his chair toward Parsons, lifted his leg and ‘passed gas loudly,’ the complaint said. Cruz, according to the complaint, then fanned the gas toward the officer.

‘The gas was very odorous and created contact of an insulting or provoking nature with Patrolman Parsons,’ the complaint alleged.

He was also charged with driving under the influence, driving without headlights and two counts of obstruction.

Cruz acknowledged passing gas but said he didn’t move his chair toward the officer nor aim gas at the patrolman. He said he had an upset stomach at the time, but police denied his request to go to the bathroom when he arrived at the station.

‘I couldn’t hold it no more,’ he said.

Right, career over

How old is Swish? thirty – eigh… twenty eight. what makes you think he’s going to completely fall apart as a player when he is in his prime years?

I don't think his career is over...

I just don’t think that Kenny got what he expected. He got an .800 OPS corner outfielder / first baseman.

Wrong?

Swisher is not a CF’er just because the Sox throw him out there. He can play LF, RF, and 1B, which is his best position. And his career line is .244 / .355 / .452 / .807.

it's tough to do that exactly

but there’s a predicted OPS stat that I think THT does (prOPS for short) that had him in the .850 – .875 range. you have to remember that he had a ton of line drives go for outs. when those get caught in the OF, that often means losing out on extra bases. in fact, according to Dan Fox’s blog (pretty sure I posted this a while back, but I can probably find it if you’re interested) but line drives fall for base hits about 75% of the time and SLG is something like .750 for them. In order to derive the number, he gathered up three years of batted ball data (all that was available at the time) and looked at the results. so assuming this sample (and we’re talking nearly every batted ball over a 3 year span, so a huge sample) is useful in describing what you should expect from batted ball types, we should be able to get a lot out of that data.

the thing that hasn’t been done is investigate “subtypes” so to speak of the basic batted ball categories (GB/FB/LD/PU). Obviously velocity and angle play a big part of this and it’s the sort of data that, right now, is being mined in assessing fielding. if you looked at bases per batted ball versus velocity and angle, you could get a very precise expectation. we’re not there yet, but what we have is pretty robust.

depends upon the hitter, really.

thome’s always been around 30% and he’s quite valuable. this is obvious, but for the squirrels, guys who get on base a lot and hit for power can have higher k rates. swisher has always been around 25% or so.

it’s pretty much the hits that haven’t been falling in. and with a line drive rate that i think is the highest in his career, something is seriously not computing.

Look at the Dodgers' roster...

Why would they trade for an outfielder? They already have two outfielders that I would rather have than Dye and a couple others under contract for 2009.
