takes some real stones for the one certifiable cocksucker on here to jump into this convo.-mm

1964 Philadelphia Phillies

. This has to be the biggest collapse of all-time. The Phillies led the St Louis Cardinals by 6 ½ games with 12 games to play. They then promptly lose 10 in a row and lose the pennant by one game and finish in a second place tie with the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals go on to win the World Series.

by RoyEgan on Sep 27, 2008 7:50 PM CDT   0 recs

Boy, it would have been horrible...

if Clayton Richard had started this game, wouldn’t it?

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 27, 2008 7:51 PM CDT   0 recs

Just imagine the score

What's the sound made when the ball is missed for another strikeout... SWISH!

by Brush Back on Sep 27, 2008 7:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...

that was against the Yankees, not against a real major-league offense like the one they feature in Cleveland.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 27, 2008 7:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hell, Indians

started a guy far worse than Richard

by Bull Pain on Sep 27, 2008 7:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm working on a theory

That Vazquez is not good on short rest

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 7:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

but buehrle has been.....

we got that going for us.

brian anderson would've caught that...

by BuehrleMan on Sep 27, 2008 7:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it's clear that they should have kept richard on the rotation and pitched everyone on regular rest

Richard might have/probably would’ve gotten beat up in MN, but that happened anyway.

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 7:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hindsight

Plus its only been 2+ innings of Richard here.

"Not like this"

by vince_ on Sep 27, 2008 7:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah...

how could anyone predict that Javier Vazquez was going to fail tonight? He’s always good on short rest.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 27, 2008 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Richard could literally self-immolate on the mound and it wouldn't have been worse.

If the had given Richard the missed starts, they lose those games, but maybe win a start by Vazquez or Floyd.

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 7:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Doesnt' matter

On regular rest the starters go one inning longer, then you still deal with that horror story bullpen eventually.

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

horror story?

or tragicomedy?

brian anderson would've caught that...

by BuehrleMan on Sep 27, 2008 7:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's safe to say

it couldn’t have gone worse. Javy’s been awful, Danks was poor last night and Floyd wasn’t sharp. Only Buehrle pitched well and we still lost.

by Bull Pain on Sep 27, 2008 7:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

This is so bad is laughable

Hard to work up a righteous disgust when it’s this ridiculous

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 7:53 PM CDT   0 recs

i thought yesterday was a bit more ridiculous.

this is a close second though.

brian anderson would've caught that...

by BuehrleMan on Sep 27, 2008 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What's even funnier is the Twinkies spitting up the bit at home against the Royals 2 in a row

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 7:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I didn't read the other thread... I was in a bar

But I’m 90% sure Javy told AJ “FUCK YOU” when he gave up the 3-run double to Cabrera

Can anyone confirm?

Between Ozzie's cracks and this tantrum on the mound, he gone - Ozzie should've shut up so we get something in trade at least

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 8:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was going to say something after last start, but was giving him this opportunity to prove himself

Can the Sox even keep him around given how he folded down the stretch? We know what we have there, and it’s not worth the price of admission.

by The Cheat on Sep 27, 2008 8:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

IDK, just my opinion

but he was pitching like a MF the first few innings. It certainly look like he had a tired arm.

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 8:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It'll be tough

The Yankees bailed on him in the same scenario. It will be tough for him to win over the fans again, no matter how lousy Chris Young is doing.

by Bull Pain on Sep 27, 2008 8:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's pretty bad

When your manager and teammates call you out, in the media, as a gag artist. Not really the place where you want to come to work every day, especially when on your last chance to shut them the fuck up you cough up the hairball again.

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not even about "choking"...

it’s about calling out a player and then setting him up to fail. Whether or not you think that Vazquez has mental toughness issues, he’s not someone who should start on short rest. You don’t expose a player’s weakness and then mock him for failing. This is on Guillen.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Sep 27, 2008 8:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

20/20 hindsight

But as bad as the bullpen has been, you might as well concede the 1 out of 5 games to the shitty 5th starter instead of converting your 1-4 SP’s into mediocrities. Who knows, but this team wasn’t going to do shit in the playoffs anyway. Might as well roll the bones and see what happens.

"The little things are always in my mind," he said. "I always like to move the guy over, I like to bunt."

by ChicagoPete on Sep 27, 2008 8:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I wish contracts were done soccer style

where you negotiate new wages with your potentially new team before you can be officially transferred and neither team has to worry about the previous contract. Javy would be off to Tottenham Hotspur the day the transfer deadline lifted if that was the case.

by Bull Pain on Sep 27, 2008 8:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

This rotation scares me though:

Buehrle
Danks
Floyd
Richard
Broadway?

(As much as I dislike vazquez, he can at least give you league average or slightly above innings for most of the year until crunch time)

Dye is easily tradable -- and the most wanted

the other two have full NT protection.

Swisher is in the mix too. Ozzie may ask for him to be gone too.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on Sep 27, 2008 8:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd hope they keep Swisher

I still think he can rebound, and they’d be trading low….

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 8:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

Hope he keeps his mouth shut between now and the Winter Meetings

Pretty unlikely :(

Maybe hope he doesn’t say anything that will raise KW’s ire?

Only if he's here as the 4th outfielder and backup 1st

no comment on the 1st base person

What's the sound made when the ball is missed for another strikeout... SWISH!

by Brush Back on Sep 27, 2008 8:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Given Swish's age, his 2006, 2007 seasons and his home park

I think he can put up an .850 OPS. I’m OK with him starting in the OF next season. We know 1B is taken…

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 8:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Where - CF or RF... I don't see Dye going anywhere... so CF?

What's the sound made when the ball is missed for another strikeout... SWISH!

by Brush Back on Sep 27, 2008 8:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dye could be traded...

Q could move to RF….

But I’d be OK with Swisher in CF again. Unlike Griffey he’s only somewhat below average out there….

by hitlesswonder on Sep 27, 2008 8:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The it will be Swish in CF - I doubt Dye will go anywhere

We probably end up

paying like 6 mil for a year of a scrub like Paul Byrd

by Bull Pain on Sep 27, 2008 8:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't want to underrate Vazquez

He blew up in crunch time on short rest. But he’s good for 200 innings of 4.50ish ball in the Cell.
KW needs to hit big on whomever they get to replace him (if he goes). The Sox got a bunch of improbable performances this year. If they replace Vazquez, they need to do it with someone better than him to make up for likely fall offs elsewhere.
