Jenks avoids arbitration, inks $5.6MM deal
I believe the $5.6MM is a record for a first-year-eligible reliever, breaking Gagne's previous mark of $5MM. K-Rod and Gagne are Jenks closest comps in their first 3 sesaons, with those players earning $3.75/7/10 and $5/8/10, respectively, in their arb years.

Not bad
larry has that system down to a science. Especially with the way the economy is….big wigs like larry coming in dressed in their mink coats and 24k gold cigarrete holders with pockets lined with coke make for a large draw during shift changes.

Very surprising to me, especially in this market and the rest of KW’s moves this offseason.

In comparison to other relievers
especially first year relievers, he’s set a record. I think we can agree he hasn’t been the best reliever in the history of the arbitration era, and the economy makes it look worse.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jan 19, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It may be as simple as
he has more saves than any of them. The arbitration process is not supposed to be the most advance when it comes to compensating these guys.
Getting the last out in 2005 also has to be worth something.

I've seen this coming for years
and have written about it numerous times
it’s about saves… you get paid for the useless stat, and Jenks has more saves than anyone entering arbitration ever (I think)
Papelbon has 113, Jenks 117
Kaz Sasaki is the only one with more entering his arb years, and I don’t know if he actually went to arb.. His first three years weren’t at near-minimum, so he’s not a good comp anyway

Not with K-Rod, et.al. getting $10-13MM/year contracts it isn't.
Although if we are a .500 team this year one might argue we’d have been better off selling high, since saves won’t be quite as important as when you are in a one-game playoff for the division championship. Maybe KW is convinced we can still contend. And who’s to say he’s wrong?

Seeking to commemorate Barack Obama’s inauguration Tuesday—and no doubt bring in more business—Krispy Kreme is offering “a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day.”
The offer is about “honoring American’s [sic] sense of pride and freedom of choice,” the chain said in a news release. “Stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies—just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.”
…
“The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that ‘choice’ is synonymous with abortion access and celebration of ‘freedom of choice’ is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand,” American Life League President Judie Brown said in a news release. “The next time you stare down a conveyor belt of slow-moving, hot, sugary glazed donuts at your local Krispy Kreme you just might be supporting President-elect Barack Obama’s radical support for abortion on demand.”
every time you eat a donut from krispy kreme, a fetus is aborted.

freddy news
There has been some speculation that the White Sox are no longer interested in Garcia after they signed another injury-prone veteran Bartolo Colon last week. That’s not necessarily true. Given Colon’s physical troubles over the past three seasons, there is still plenty of interest in Garcia on the South Side. And even if Colon does manage to stay off the disabled list, they still need a No. 5 starter… If they get Garcia, that buys more time to develop promising left-hander Aaron Poreda.
