Brian Roberts always seems to be linked to the Chicago Cubs in trade rumors, but White Sox general manager Kenny Williams loves the guy and is trying to acquire him.

The two sides have discussed former Mount St. Joe pitcher Gavin Floyd as a starting point in trade talks. The Orioles might need more, though the White Sox would want it to be straight-up, since they'd be surrendering a 17-game winner.

Type B Starting Pitchers

will kenny grab one among the 5 here?

There are several other options available on the free agent market, though, that would not require long-commitment/big-money contracts. Doubly important, their classification as Type B free agents means that the teams they eventually sign with do not have to surrender a first-round draft pick next season. As of right now, there are five such pitchers on the market: Paul Byrd, Jon Garland, Braden Looper, John Smoltz, and Randy Wolf. …

Roberts and replev starter is pretty much equal to Gavin and Getz

so I don’t get that. I guess the draft picks push it over a smidge, but it’s still pretty nearly a wash. I guess this is more evidence that KW wants to make good on that Marquez threat. The system is so thin on pitching I don’t know why dealing Floyd would make sense. This team is on an average trajectory for the near future. Roberts wouldn’t change that.

pieces to the puzzle, friend

the problem is that Roberts might regress to the middle of the pack as he ages, which might start this year. I’d rather take the risk of Floyd regressing and bouncing back stronger somewhere over the course of the next four years.

The Sox have a lot of pitchers that could be average innings-eaters, but probably won’t be. You’d like to think at least one of them does so this year and Poreda steps through. So yeah, having Floyd is a good thing. But there’s a bit of a crowd still. I’m just afraid of having 8 starters this year.

teams know better now

it may have been a one time heist, or at least for a long time. And all-out rebuilding projects do little but alienate fans that might latch on somewhere else, and then there goes all that revenue, and then your team is in perpetual failure. It’s just not a good idea for a big market team.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jan 2, 2009 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

I agree that it may alienate fans

And I guess “all-out” is too strong. I’d like to see the Sox continue to replenish the farm system and aim to compete in 2010 instead of continuing down that “average trajectory” like colintj said. But wouldn’t four straight years of 77-82 victories ultimately alienate fans as well?

How do we not do this trade?

We took Gavin Big Balls Floyd off of the scrap heap and turn him into Brian Roberts.

I think most of you are forgetting that Brian Roberts would be filling 2 Positions…
Starting Second baseman
Lead off Hitter.

Gavin only fills one
Starting Pitcher

This is simple arithmetic.

Okay now in all seriousness 400,000 for Gavin 400,000 Getz
8,000,000 for B Rob………… I thought we were in cost cutting mode

I’m not that crazy about losing Big Nuts Gavin but he did give up 30 hr’s and i think that it’s a good time to sell high on him.
Roberts is an on base machine
                    hit 51 doubles last year
Swiped 90 bags thrown out 17 times in the last 2 seasons

With all that being said i don’t think that we can afford to lose the pitching…

Why couldn’t this have been done for swisher or Vazquez …?

I am going to ask you one time, and i'm gonna ask you nice. Where the fuck is Ringo bitch.

most of my post was littered with sarcasm

I agree with you… I think that we are too thin starting pitching wise to give up a semi-proven young cheap starter. I not afraid to hand the ball to Gavin in any situation. By saying that he can be traded away aren’t we saying that anyone can be had. Danks, Q, Alexie, Gavin, I am sure that they would fetch us something great but, those are the 4 guys you want to build around. Young, cheap, and on the rise.

Roberts would probably end up being another class a free agent so it might be 2 more picks

Any news on O cab…..?

by ElDiablo on Jan 3, 2009 12:12 AM CST up reply actions

I feel like OCab will sign somewhere...

But it might not be until March. Seriously, he has no value—any team that would want to sign him at this point would probably be looking for a cheap one-year option, and there’s no way that team is going to want to give up two draft picks for that. Eventually, somebody (my guess: the Royals and Dayton Moore) will give in and get Cabrera, but it won’t be anytime soon.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?

maybe one of these days white sox fans will realize the complete and utter larceny that was the garland for cabrera trade.

and they sent us money? for a guy who produced about $15M in value? as i said before when people were actually concerned (!) that cabrera would accept arbitration and whining about the possibility of it, a one year deal for cabrera would be goddamn larceny again. shit, a two or even three year deal at the rate he’s likely to get now will probably be theft, too. even giving up the picks. some team is going to be very happy. and some team’s beat reporter’s wife is going to be really happy, too.

by larry on Jan 3, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

*pick

here i am continuing the misinformation from uribeauction’s post. using his example, the royals would be losing, like, the 53rd pick in the draft or something. big deal if i’m getting cabrera for a cut rate price on a short term deal.

by larry on Jan 3, 2009 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

topical.

there are a few things wrong with this “study” but i think it delivers a salient point regarding draft compensation.

http://www.birdsinthebelfry.com/draft_volume2_part_two.htm

by larry on Jan 3, 2009 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

I should've made that clear in my post

The reason why I think the Royals will get him is because they won’t have to give up anything major in compensation.

And I don’t think he has a ton of value not in the sense that he can’t play anymore, but that no teams out there desperately need a shortstop.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?

by UribeAuction on Jan 3, 2009 12:39 PM CST up reply actions

desperate need doesn't necessarily matter.

the question is whether a given team will see better production from cabrera than option x, all factors considered. and there are plenty out there. it’s not like there are 10, let alone 30, SS out there which are even close to being as good as cabrera is overall. don’t confuse an overall slow market for no market for a particular player. he’ll get paid eventually.

by larry on Jan 3, 2009 12:43 PM CST up reply actions

That's true...

Cabrera certainly is an upgrade over a ton of team’s shortstops, and whatever team signs him could get a bigger free agent bargain than Randy Johnson. And some team will sign him—I just don’t expect it to be until around February.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?

domino effect

or is it affect? anyway, the dominoes are standing still this offseason. regression to the mean is inevitable, even if that doesn’t guarantee that Cabrera will get better than arbitration, he has suitors. Maybe a long-shot, but I wonder if perhaps the Padres will go for him now. Or by proxy, the Cubs if Theriot were somehow traded for Peavy or something. I digress.

I want to stress that I’m not reporting that a deal is close to being completed. I’m just saying that White Sox general manager Kenny Williams would love to acquire Roberts, the Orioles apparently brought up Gavin Floyd’s name, and the White Sox appear willing to trade him – probably figuring this would be a good time to move him, with his stock so high. And Chicago has a second baseman who could be included in the deal, one that the Orioles really like.

"[Andruw] Jones' career in jeopardy"
Jones looked awful last season, generating the kind of numbers that would earn most players an immediate ticket out of baseball — he struck out 76 times in 209 at-bats, and had a .158 batting average. In fact, he had more strikeouts than hits and walks combined (60).

Scouts believe his defense is quickly regressing, largely because … well, he’s gotten large. “He’s just too heavy to play at the level he used to play at in the outfield,” one scout said Saturday.

“He’s fat,” said another.

Evaluators are not too confident in Jones’ ability to undergo a body transformation, because as great as he was in the outfield, he has never been known as a workout freak. Jones is playing winter ball, but he has even looked bad there, reports one highly ranked executive.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

he's consulted for a few teams now.

you may recognize some of the other names mentioned in it, too.

Griffey suffered the injury early in the season with the Reds when he tripped over a misplaced foot locker in the Reds' clubhouse.

what would we need to give to get for lastings?
The more interesting piece of info on Washington this week was the report that Lastings Milledge could be trade bait prior to the 2009 season. Milledge was impressive in the second half and is immensely talented; I’d imagine the return would have to be quite nice.

he's not meant for this team

we don’t improve hitters here. he hasn’t showed his offensive skills are developed, so he wouldn’t be worth the price, most likely. Though a Floyd-Milledge swap would probably be fair.

Make this trade.

Then sign Garland and Pedro. Pedro can pitch until he breaks down then we can insert Poerda. How come I don’t get paid for this?

So, if I am reading the two options correctly . . .
we can either a) keep dye or b) trade dye . . . is that you Phil Rogers?
