Around SBN: Troubled Yankees Join Troubled Red Sox In Last Place

Veteran pitcher Bartolo Colon's return to the White Sox' rotation has hit a speed bump.

General manager Ken Williams revealed Wednesday that Colon underwent surgery in the fall to remove bone chips from his right elbow, a procedure that will keep the big right-hander off the mound when the Sox open spring training Feb. 15 in Glendale, Ariz.

''We'll bring him along in the second half of spring training,'' Williams said.

OT: Limbaugh? Sounds more like WU:

And there’s a very telling passage, in which Limbaugh says, "The culture, we’ve lost the culture Sean. We have lost pop culture. It is unrealistic to expect that people watching MTV, going to see the rot Hollywood’s putting out, listening to the rot music is today, that every four years they’re going to go into a voting booth and vote Republican, vote conservative."

After years of attempts to make conservatism cool somehow, this is its new face, much the same as it ever was: a cranky old man complaining about the movies and music the young people like these days.

As if to underscore the point, later in the program Hannity brings in Pat Boone to comment on the week’s news. Pat Boone.

let me clarify because i see this may be unclear.

he was probably fine as a defender. the problem is that fine doesn’t cut it when your bat is putrid. you have to be plus plus to make up for it. that’s what i mean by reasonable.

fangraphs has him basically worth nothing last year.

i know

and i don’t think you’re off your shit or something.

i just don’t know what the metrics are actually measuring in situations like this. i know fangraphs uses UZR for one season to do value, but rolling 3 year averages plus the FSR makes more sense to me. the FSR is probably a lot more responsive afa year to year changes in actual talent are concerned.

i advocated him being on the roster.

and i don’t regret that position. i thought he’d rebound defensively to make him worth the contract (assuming he played enough, which was rather the point of having an insurance policy like him on the team). unfortunately, he didn’t. sox may have overpaid but i’m not sure they could have gotten someone for a similar price to do the job any better. you usually overpay for insurance anyway, even if you draw on it.

Lillibridge won't be needed unless Alexei's injured.

Betemit can play there in a pinch, but Alexei should be filling OC’s. It’d probably be good to let Liilibridge work on his bat anyway. If he figures it out, there’s going to be room somewhere on the infield most likely.

And I have BA starting in center anyway. I assume you have The Jerry Owens Experience? I’m not even going to think about that until it actually happens.

Blago claims behavior was just an elaborate plan to surprise Patrick Fitzgerald with

Senate Nomination on his birthday.

SPRINGFIELD, IL—As his impeachment trial began Monday, Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich kicked off a national media tour to explain that his alleged senatorial pay-to-play scheme was merely an elaborate plot to surprise U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald with a Senate seat on his birthday. “You try to do something nice for someone, and look what happens,” the embattled governor told reporters at a press conference during which he unveiled a birthday cake for Fitzgerald. “People get wind of it, so you try to cover up the big party you planned, then things get out of hand and the story ends up involving a children’s hospital, threats to the Tribune, and a half-million-dollar bribe. Next thing you know, you’re getting investigated by the very person you wanted to do something nice for! Pat, I’m sorry your birthday surprise was spoiled.” Before taking questions, Blagojevich changed into a plumber’s outfit and attempted to sneak out of the room, saying in a thick Italian accent that the toilet was backed up and he had to fix it right away.

White Sox appear in good financial shape
The Sox are likely to sign Quentin, Danks and Floyd to one-year contracts instead of multiyear deals that would buy them out of at least the first year of arbitration.

The risk is that another successful year could cost the Sox more money. That was the case with Jenks, whose representatives were intent on signing a one-year deal in 2008.

Nevertheless, the Sox retain some financial flexibility. They are committed to only $36.6 million in salaries for 2010.

Marquez to debut in rotation?
The Daily Herald reports that White Sox GM Kenny Williams has recently been very high on pitching prospect Jefferey Marquez. It is believed the rookie is a strong candidate to fill the No. 5 spot in the team’s rotation.

Our View: Marquez came over from the Yankees in the Nick Swisher deal. He has a good sinker to go with a strong fastball and curveball. If he shows quality control this spring, he just might be a deep-sleeper in fantasy drafts.

Jerry Owens sucks.

That won’t stop him from winning the CF job, though.

I’m interested to see what Chris Getz can do.

I think Clayton Richard can be a good reliever.

Thanks. Crumbs, but thanks.

I would rather douse a newspaper in gasoline, wrap it around my penis and light it on fire then relive that experience

White Sox Proving Cautious With Spending
White Sox officials told CBSSports.com’s Danny Knobler that owner Jerry Reinsdorf presented a bleak economic picture at the start of the offseason and that the club is “comfortable going young.”

GM Ken Williams elaborated on the point: “We have to be cautious, if for no other reason that so we don’t have to play all day games because we can’t afford the electricity. This is such a volatile time, and people are going to look at their discretionary spending.”

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

I'm comfortable with it too.

We still have enough core talent to win the division. That’s fine by me.

Giants Sign Juan Uribe to Minor League Deal

Giants sign Uribe. Good news for a guy who was rather painful to watch at the plate and in the field.

Joe Crede wants more money from the Twins? I am curious to see what quality of Mary Jane the Missouri farm boy gets out in the sticks or if he has just cut out the middle man and gone straight to the crystal meth. Next thing you know we will be seeing Joe on an episode of “Dog the Bounty Hunter” getting chewed out by Dog in the backseat of his gas guzzler about using ice.

Colon is a low-risk situation. They could cut him loose by the end of spring with as many protections as the Sox have in that deal.
