All-Time White Sox Shortstop

So in our highest vote total yet, Nellie Fox somehow defeated Eddie Collins to become our All-Time team's second baseman.  The team now looks like this: DH-Frank Thomas, C-Carlton Fisk, 1B-Paul Konerko, and now 2B-Nellie Fox.  I don't think WU has been happy about a single choice so far.  Once again, we're only going to have four choices because I can't differentiate Buck Weaver's 822 games at third from his 427 at third and Juan Uribe's numbers at short aren't really that impressive.  So here we go:

Luke Appling

Luke-appling_medium

"Old Aches and Pains" is yet another Sox Hall of Famer.  His number 4 is retired, but there isn't a statue of him, yet.  Appling was well known to be able to foul balls off like a madman.  His teammates were responsible for his nickname, as he complained endlessly about how sore and hurt he was.  And he was a seven time All-Star. If he was actually in as much pain as he claimed to be, his numbers are even more impressive.  He is the Sox all-time leader in games, at-bats, hits, and singles.  He ranks second in runs, total bases, doubles, and RBI.  Basically, this would be even more sad than the last vote if he doesn't win.  In his 20 seasons with the team, Luke posted the following numbers: 2,422 games, 1,319 runs, 2,749 hits, 440 doubles, 102 triples, 45 homers, 1,116 RBI, 179 stolen bases, a 112 OPS+, and a slash-line of .310/.399/.398/.797.

Chico Carrasquel

52topps-251_medium

Luke's replacement at short, Chico Carrasquel was the first Latin-American All-Star in the majors.  He was also the first Latin-American shortstop for the White Sox in what would become a long line of them.  Most Venezuelan players credit him for making baseball so popular in the country.  Chico was a four time All-Star and a pretty solid fielder from what I've read.  In his six seasons with the Sox before being traded to free up room for our next player, Chico posted the following numbers: 837 games, 410 runs, 825 hits, 119 doubles, 32 homers, 307 RBI, and a slash-line of .265/.339/.348/.687.

Luis Aparicio

Luis-aparicio-hof-1_medium

Chico's replacement, Luis Aparicio is easily more well-known.  Aparicio won the Rookie of the Year in 1956, and went on to become a six time All-Star.  He also won seven Gold Gloves.  Luis ranks sixth in franchise history in runs, seventh in hits, and second in stolen bases (318).  His number 11 has been retired by the Sox, he's in the Hall of Fame, and he has a statue on the concourse.  The Sox traded him away twice, and traded for him once in the middle of those two.  In his 10 seasons with the Sox, Luis posted the following numbers: 1,491 games, 1,574 hits, 222 doubles, 54 triples, 43 homers, 461 RBI, and a slash-line of .269/.320/.348/.668.

Ozzie Guillen

Ozzie-guillen-choke_medium

Our beloved boy, current manager, and for some reason I haven't been able to remember my favorite player as a child, Ozzie Guillen.  The 1985 Rookie of the Year went on to become a three-time All-Star with the Sox and won the 1990 Gold Glove.  Ozzie ranks fifth in franchise history in games and sixth in hits.  And in case you were very unawares, he went on to manage the team starting in 2004 and was at the helm for the 2005 World Series Championship.  In his thirteen seasons with the Sox, Ozzie posted the following numbers: 1683 games, 1599 hits, 239 doubles, 68 triples, 24 homers, 560 RBI, and a slash-line of .266/.287/.340/.627.

No love for the best White Sox mustache of my lifetime?

I wouldn’t argue Valentin over Appling, but I think you could argue Valentin as the second best White Sox SS of all-time. I’m uncomfortable taking any absolute stance because I don’t know about the defensive merits of all these guys, but I know Valentin was probably underrated as a defender. I know he made a decent amount of errors but, like Uribe, I thought he made up for it with plus-plus range and a plus-plus arm. If I’m correct in my analysis about Valentin being an above average defender, he almost certainly should be number two on this list. In his five years with the Sox he was better-than-average all five years (adjusting for position), and four of the five years he was was well-above average with the bat (from 2000-to-2004, OPS+’ of 107, 116, 105, 100, 92).

(Argh! I see cip has beat me to the punch.)

The only area where the ‘stache gets docked is longevity — he only spent five seasons with the Sox. Even taking that into consideration, though, I still think he’s probably the Sox second best all-time SS.

Looks like I’ll be 1-for-5 after this, unless Chiburb gets his fucking friends and family to all vote for Looie, since he helped win the ‘59 pennant. I’m sure Early Wynn will be the RHP he votes for, too. OPOS.

Well, my "fucking friends" are female and don't care about baseball. As for family...

The PS has a mind of her own (as you know), and more importantly a SET OF WHITE SOX CARDS THAT HAVE TAUGHT HER ALL ABOUT OLD PLAYERS.
That said, I voted for Luke. Even as a kid, as much as I loved Luis, I heard constant comparisons that usually ended with “yeah, but he’s no Appling”. Never heard anybody say about Nellie “yeah, but he’s no Collins”.

more so Valentin. I suppose it doesn’t really matter as its Appling all the way…. However…. the line “basically this would be more sad than the last vote if he doesn’t win” should not have been used in the paragraph….this is a vote for goodness sakes….

because we're creating a whole team and every position ain't going to be debatable.

just because a vote is held doesn’t mean there isn’t a correct answer.

i find these threads interesting for a discussion they create more than anything.

by larry on Jan 9, 2009 11:22 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree that there are certain undeniable players....but since everyone appears to be voting on a different system and for different reasons, there really isn't. This is an opinion vote - Who would you put on an all-time Sox roster?

“You” being the operative word.

Anyway, it’s not really formal and I don’t really give a shit because I, like you, are just enjoying the discussion started in these threads. But just for the sake of objectivity and good form (which SSS is all about, nyuknyuk), the vote facilitator should not say “Vote for this person or you’re schtupide.”

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

by homesickalien on Jan 9, 2009 11:40 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Calling Frank the "awesomest" at something, is an opinion; but a far milder sentiment than what was said here (using a cutesy nonexistent word to describe the legend that is Frank, is not going to persuade a vote).

This post’s sentence was far more direct and said something to the effect of “It will be a joke if he doesn’t win.”

I agree with you, and I like how U-God’s been writing them – casually and interjecting his two cents here and there…it’s great.
But as a lawyer, you should be able to distinguish the nuance of his Frank comment vs. this one.

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

You are kidding, yes?

I’m sure we can do a search and have someone with better career #‘s than Valentin, fer Chrissakes. Do you want to have this discussion? Kind of like the one about why our 25th man is so-and-so and not such-and-such. Carrasquel would be the one you’d dump in favor of Valentine/Uribe – do either compare to Chico? No? Next argument.

Listen you old bastard.....

Valentin put up some pretty historic home run numbers. In his stretch with the Sox he is right up there with the best shortstops in baseball. Would I have voted for him over Appling? No…. However I think both Valentin and Uribe are just as viable of options as Guillen. I saw all 3 of them play and I would take Valentin and Uribe over Guillen any day of the week. If either had as long of a run on the team as Ozzie did they would have smashed all of his numbers.

Kenwo4life=ratings

by KenWo4LiFe on Jan 9, 2009 4:12 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Holy shit, KenWo.

“Right up there with the best shortstops in baseball”? Well, shit, I guess Rob Deer and Dave Kingman should be in the fucking Hall! Guillen was a much better all-around SS than Valentin. How many AS appearances for Valentin? Was he a ROY? Any Gold Gloves?

I guess his 5th and final year with the Sox his powerful .216 AVG is impressing you. Or is it the .287 OBP with the 139 K’s? And, of course, he was a fucking wizard in he field throughout his Sox career.

At least we got rid of Navarro for him, I’ll grant you that. But comparing Guillen, who was the cornerstone of our infield for 12 years, to Valentin is asinine. Go teach someone something, as long as it is not objectivity. Fer Chrissakes.

If Guillen was around with Jeter, Tejada, A Rod and Michel Young

He would have never made the all star team either. Besides Cal Ripken, the 80s and early 90s didn’t have many great shortstops. From 85-96 (The year A-Rod arrived) Tony Fernandez, Kurt Stillwell, Gary DiSarcina, Alan Trammell, Ozzie Guillen and Travis Fryman received all star credibility. I would bet that Valentin would have made the all star team at least 2 times if he was around in that era with the Sox.

That's a good question, that my google skills leave me unable

to answer. Tom Tippett in gold glove review for 03, suggests it was his best year, but not completely out of the ordinary:

"Valentin is somewhat error-prone, there’s no question about that. His fielding percentage has lagged the league average every year he’s been in the majors, sometimes by quite a bit. Since 2001, however, he’s gotten better, making only 2-3 more errors per season than the average shortstop.

But Valentin has also been consistently better than the league in range during his career. In 2003, he led all major-league shortstops in net plays made and adjusted range factor, and he was second (behind Eckstein) in the STATS zone rating. Depending on which of these measures you prefer to go with, Valentin made somewhere between 20 and 56 more plays than the average shortstop. Taking the strengths and weaknesses of each of these measures into account, I’d put his contribution somewhere in the range of 30-35 plays.

This would make it his best defensive year, but it’s not too far above the level he’s set in previous years. Problem is, his tendency to make errors has occasionally cost him a full-time job, so we don’t have a lot of recent history to go on. But if you extrapolate his part-time 2001 and 2002 seasons into full years, and if you adjust for all the errors he made in 2000, Valentin has consistently shown the ability to reach about 20 more balls per season than the average shortstop."
