Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

''I'll be honest, I would still love to come back,'' Thome said, tightening the blue batting gloves on each hand. ''I still care about the city. I mean, we're going to live there. Chicago's very fond in my heart. The time that I spent there, [chairman Jerry Reinsdorf] treated me great. I guess we'll deal with that when this is all over with.''

''I want to come back to the American League,'' Thome said. ''I guess you never know what's going to happen. Chicago is a great city. It's a great ballclub. The people there were great. If anything, I thank them for putting me where I'm at right now, giving me that opportunity.''

He's not goddamn useless. At $5m, there's value there. And how much nicer must the man be?

Oh geez...finish the season first, dude.

I guess at 5 million for ONE year, there could be worse, but I think it’s time to go in another direction.

by Q!'s Qrew on Oct 11, 2009 4:48 AM CDT reply actions

This different direction hopefully doesn't involve the use of Pods at DH

in a revolving door of shit. I’ll take Jimmy in the middle as long as he jacks 30+, walks 100 times, and drives in a 100. We play in a launching pad, we need launchers.

I still think he retires if he wins a ring.

But, moving up the HR ladder (could go as high as 7th or 8th all-time by next season) might be too enticing to pass up.

It’s a better choice than Pods DH’ing, that’s for damn sure. I hope Kenny at least takes a look at some other candidates as well, would be kind of stupid to just pencil Jim in for next season.

I've enjoyed reading that paying Pods $5M to DH is a better idea than Thome at $5M to DH

It’s fun stuff.

Sure, I’d rather have Nick Johnson or maybe Abreu (maybe…Ozzie would probably play him in RF way too much).

But, if the Sox budget is as screwed as it sounds like it might be and Thome is wiling to play for 1 year on the cheap I’m not sure the Sox can beat that.

I thought the Red Sox were guaranteed to win as part of Bud’s vast media conspiracy, right Angels fans?

I feel sorry for the family in my church who are BoSox fans

The kids are probably crying right now. But they’re the only Boston fans I feel sorry for.

So how does this work now?

Because the Red Sox, according to their fans, already won the World Series in April, so are they back in it somehow via double-elimination? And if so, can WE get back in this thing somehow?

I just don't get it...How is the media not all over this?

I guess Pavano “does well against” the yankees, but I think it’s pretty fucking stupid. Whatever, SWEEP!

if we didn't trade Thome

he might’ve hit 600 next year, but now it’ll take two years

but playoffs are more important, oh well

I think not.

no, it is not 'crosstown'. it is a 405 series if they both (probably won't) make it.

it would be a akin to joliet-chicago ‘crosstown’ series.

These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

Ha ha...no Sawks vs. Yankmes this year

Sorry ESPN, now you only have one team to give oral to throughout the rest of the playoffs.
