White Sox Minor League Update: Round Up the Usual Suspects

No one bothered to post their own prospect list in response to mine.  Perhaps it was neglect.  Perhaps it was fear.  Either way, you can participate in sister site Minor League Ball's community list for the White Sox here.

The Arizona Fall League starts Tuesday October 13.  You can follow the league on Twitter here.  We'll have daily updates on the White Sox players who are participating (roster here).  Also we'll have infrequent updates on the other fall/winter leagues, along with the usual smattering random news and reports.

SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

The scouting reports I've read on him have all been very good.

He’s got an above average glove, good speed and baserunning, has shown some power and has always hit for a high average. Feel free to drop him down in your list.

i've noticed a significant divergence of opinion on them.

hudson because he’s essentially come out of nowhere and flowers because his ability to play catcher is still questioned by some. most of the major listmakers haven’t tipped their hands but i’d say they’d both be around 50, but with some placing one or both a lot higher or lower.

this is what I put on MiLB

Hudson – I’ve heard if he can develop a cutter, he may be a number one, but he’s fine where he is

Danks – dissapointing second half due to injuries. Best case scenario: corner outfielder if he fills out his frame

Flowers – (his bat actually kinda dissapointed me in September, but again it was only September)

Mitchell – still needs plenty of time to develop tools, future leadoff center fielder

Viciedo – future first baseman, give him some more time

aaaaaaaaaaand

My list

1. Flowers – upside of average defensive catcher and plus offensive catcher = right-handed Brian McCann. IMO that is more valuable than any pitcher short of a true ace (Greinke, Sabathia, Halladay, Santana etc.). Probably equal uncertainty as to whether Hudson or Flowers gets to their upside (Flowers K% and Hudson is a pitcher (TINSTAAPP and all). It’s close but I go with Flowers. I’d prefer for him to start the year at AAA, to get more reps at C.

2. Hudson – Starts off in bullpen, should transition to starter when Freddy Garcia goes down
3. Mitchell – leadoff hitter mentality, eye and speed, + CF defense. Might develop power. Needs reps.
4. Danks- Did wrist injury tank his 2nd half? Back to AA to find out.
5.Viciedo – Still only 20 y.o. Some 2nd half improvement. Needs to step it up

6. Morel
7. CJ Retherford
8. Ely
9. Marrero – same age as Danks and better stats at the same level. Danks rates higher based on tools and abilty to play CF. He ahould make it to AAA next year. Needs to work on his BB rate.
10. Miguel Gonzalez- larry’s fave, but I’m gonna rate him higher than larry. 18 yo in a position of scarcity. Hopefully he’ll get a shot at Kanny sometime next year.
11. Santos Rodriguez – Insane K rates, big FB, lefty, long long way from MLB but probably the highest upside arm in the system
12. Holmberg

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

What did you make of Flowers' ZiPS projection?

Was I wrong to expect more from his projection? I thought he’d be a lot closer to a league average bat than he actually was…

by CWSKeith on Oct 12, 2009 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ZiPS is worried about Flowers for 2010 as a major leaguer for a couple of reasons:

- Catchers tend to develop quite erratically as hitters and are far more likely to regress offensively than players at any other position. Downside pulls down the expectation.

- A fair chunk of Flowers production was a result of extremely high BABIP (strikeouts are a related issue). He was above .390 in both AA and AAA.

know you read SSS. Always good to have ZiPS creator stop by. CWS, I would add that my statement of “plus offensive catcher” as an upside was based on more like 2012 than 2010.

Mine's similar to bhoov

1. Flowers – (same reasoning as bhoov)
2. Hudson – jumps to 1st if/when he learns a cutter, assuming it’s a useful pitch for him
3. Danks – I think his drop in performance was primarily due to injury not due to regression to any sort of mean
4. Mitchell – Playing only baseball hopefully will help since he is still pretty raw
5. Viciedo – I liked the upward trend of his stats during the season before crapping the bed at the end. Hopefully that was due to fatigue and hopefully he learns some strike zone judgement
6. Morel
7. Retherford
8. Marrero
9. Ely – Need his SO/BB ratio to stop dropping
10. Gonzalez
11. Nunez

The Javelinas’ roster lists five pitchers from the Sox’s organization, and Sergio Santos is an interesting study. Santos, 26, was the 27th overall pick in the 2002 draft out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., where he was one of the top infielders in the nation.

The Arizona Diamondbacks shooed him away from USC with a healthy bonus, but Santos didn’t develop into a consistent hitter with the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays. He was one of the first spring cuts of the Sox, who traded him to San Francisco but later reacquired him and converted him to pitch.

Although Santos’ combined statistics at four levels were 0-3 with an 8.16 ERA in 26 relief appearances, Santos stuck out 30 in 28 2/3 innings. A strong AFL could actually help Santos’ chances with the Sox, or another team if he’s not placed on the 40-man roster on Nov. 20.

Dayan Viciedo smoked the third pitch he saw in the Arizona Fall League to the front of the right-field warning track for a sacrifice fly that gave his Peoria Javelinas a 1-0 lead over the Surprise Rafters on Tuesday.

But that was about the last good thing to happen to the Javelinas, who succumbed 17-4 on AFL opening day in Peoria.

Viciedo, a third baseman who is one of the White Sox’s top prospects, drove a 1-1 pitch from the Yankees’ Ian Kennedy for his RBI. But Viciedo did nothing after that. Kennedy struck him out swinging on four pitches in the fourth, and Viciedo tapped out to second in the sixth and fouled out to the catcher in the eighth against relievers.

In all, Viciedo went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and an RBI. He saw only 11 pitches in four plate appearances.

Sometimes criticized for his defense, Viciedo look solid at third. He charged a slow roller and threw on the run to nab Yankees catcher Austin Romine in the second. The next inning he threw out Cardinals DH Bryan Anderson despite slightly bobbling a ball hit to his left, and he backhanded a ball and started a 5-4-3 double play on Yankees third baseman Brandon Laird in the ninth.

Keeps putting up zeroes

Clevelan Santeliz, RHP, White Sox (VEN: Magallanes)
Yesterday’s stats: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

In five appearances for the Navegantes, Santeliz has struck out 12 over 9.2 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and a walk. Scoreless innings are really nothing new for Santeliz, as the 23-year-old had a 0.96 ERA in 40 games for Double-A Birmingham this year, including a 20-game scoreless streak during the second half of the season. His stuff is just as impressive; with a 93-96 mph fastball and plus slider, he just needs to throw more strikes to punch a ticket to the big leagues.

Danks - star will never shine
Jordan Danks, CF, White Sox (AFL: Peoria Javelinas)
Danks was one of the talks of the Carolina League during the first month of the year when he hit .322/.409/.525 for High-A Winston-Salem, but the second half of the season dimmed his star a bit, as his numbers dropped to .243/.337/.356 at Double-A Birmingham. He remains an impressive physical specimen, but if you take into account his entire playing career, including his high school and college play, more often than not he’s been a bit of a disappointment. A .424/.513/.697 showing in Arizona is helping spruce his prospect rep back up a bit, but he’s still 23 and just getting his first taste of success against upper-level competition. Even scouts who really like him don’t project him as a star.

by hoodlight on Oct 27, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Danks now at

.429/.538/.643. OPS of 1.181. 3rd in AFL in BA, 2nd in OBP, 5th in OPS. I think if he winds up top 10 in OPS in the league he buys himself a ticket to Charlotte to start the year. Maybe it was all the wrist. Charlotte would actually be pretty interesting this year if that comes to pass. Flowers, Danks and CJ.

I’m interested to see how they handle Viciedo/Morel. Viciedo doesn’t seem ready for AAA and Morel seems ready for AA. I guess if Morel tanks in AFL you send him back to high A and Viciedo to AA hope they both dominate for a month and get promoted.

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

Position players, pitchers, or both?

From Cheat’s post above

There are plenty of top offensive prospects there, but only a select few pitchers exposed to the extra length season (almost all of the good ones are coming off of shortened minor league seasons)
I can see why hitting is inflated. I’d think if a pitcher actually makes a good impression how that might be seen as a greater positive, since there seems to be a dearth of good pitching performances.

it's much more a "scouting" league than a "performance" league.

and look at the absolute horseshit the white sox sent to pitch there. if any of those guys ever pitch in the majors it will be a minor miracle. overall, the pitching talent is the worst i can recall for quite a few years.

Sounds like it is incumbent for Morel to adjust quickly, then.

If he slumps it won’t raise the confidence level of the organization if teh pitching is that bad.

should

may be your opinion. I don’t agree with your opinion. Guys that are at the extremes of performance it can play a role in where they go. Especially someone with an injury history that may explain a poor performance (Danks). Certainly a very bad performance coming off a borderline performance (Morel potentially) could also be a factor in where someone starts the year.

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

Do you think Viciedo will be in AA to start next year?

I would imagine he’d move to first base if he and Morel are both there, right?

they could move morel, too. positional flexibility will be important for him long-term.

Perhaps

Morel is not a good example of what I am talking about. The point is that performances on either extreme in the AFL can affect your assingment the following year. Are their caveats? sure. This is probably only relevant to a small number of prospects and said prospect probably would need to back that performance up with a good spring training performance. If you have a prospect coming off a bad performance that the team feels is injury related and they dominate in the AFL (when presumably healthy) then that may factor into their assingment the following year.

Danks recent cooling off in the AFL may have removed him from this category. A more germane example may be Grant Desme. Someone who dominated high A, is dominating AFL, was a bit old for his level and had an injury history. Someone like that may skip a level, with his AFL performance playing a part in such a decision. To say that “nothing that occurs in the AFL should have any effect on where someone plays” is such an absolute that it seems rather ridiculous coming from a typically reasoned observer such as yourself.

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

by bhoov on Nov 12, 2009 12:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

the player with the most PAs in the AFL typically is somewhere around 130 PAs. the top pitchers is around 30 IP.

if you’re letting 130 PAs or 30 IP dictate decisions on level, you’re doing it wrong. and it’s unlikely white sox players will be leading the league.

by larry on Nov 12, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can see

how you would think that was my position given my original post. “Buying himself a ticket to Charlotte” was some combination of hyperbole and exuberance. I actually agree that someone shouldn’t be promoted strictly on the basis of the AFL. I just think that an extremely good performance can occasionally play a role in the following year’s assignment. But it’s just another data point.

If Desme (or whoever) goes to spring training and posts a 40% K rate then I wouldn’t aggresively promote him. If someone posted a .650 OPS in AA without a potential injury explanation then it wouldn’t matter what that person did in the AFL (or spring training), they’re going back to AA. Given that Danks total AFL performance now falls short of “domination” I would send him back to AA.

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

Who needs Eckstein?
Only lightly recruited out of high school, Retherford spent two years at a junior college before landing a spot as a utility player at Arizona State. He never became a regular, and his numbers were underwhelming. The size of his heart wasn’t. “I don’t fit the typical image of a ballplayer,” said Retherford, 24. “But I was always taught to have a work ethic and play the game hard for all nine innings.”

I know the AFL is a hitter’s league, but White Sox outfielder Jordan Danks is batting .388/.508/.571 through 14 games. Reality or chimera?

      Cliff Jordan
      Chicago

I believe this is the first time the word “chimera” has appeared in Ask BA. Well played, Cliff.

I often say that people shouldn’t read too much into AFL stats, as I just did in the previous answer. The conditions favor hitters, there are few quality pitching prospects and a lot of the players are worn out after the long minor league season. Just glance at the AFL record book, and you’ll see that Ken Harvey holds the league records for batting (.479), slugging (.752) and on-base percentage (.537); Brandon Wood owns the mark for homers (14); and Orlando Miller set the standard for RBIs (44).

Danks is what he is. Though he’s 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, he never has grown into the power scouts projected he would when he was a potential first-round pick as a high schooler. He hit 13 homers in three seasons at the University of Texas, and he has slugged .425 in pro ball. He’s 23 now, and he’s not going to have average power. So those AFL power numbers are a chimera.

That said, Danks can be a solid regular. He has the bat speed and swing to hit for average, and he draws enough walks to post a solid OBP. He runs well enough to steal a few bases and play center field, and he has enough arm to move to right field if he loses a step.

Jordan Danks, CF, White Sox (AFL), 2-for-5, 2B, 2 R RBI, K: He has a .389/.500/.574 line in 15 games for the Javelinas, a much-needed bounce back after a disappointing showing at Double-A.

Jordan Danks, OF, Chicago AL
The key with the AFL is too not get too excited with the batting average or how many homers a player hits. Most players are there for extra work, which likely means there is something that they need to improve upon. Danks is a perfect example of that… He was off to an excellent season in ‘09 before fading at double-A in the second half. His raw power does not play well in games, in terms of home run power, and he hit just nine homers this past year in just over 400 at-bats. As a result, his strikeout rate of 26.0% is rather high. Danks has made nice strides in the AFL by striking out just 10 times in 58 at-bats. Even better, he’s walk 12 times. If he can keep that up, it will significantly improve his other numbers, which will then make him a more valuable addition to your fantasy squads.

sickels on danks
I liked his athleticism a lot….fast, looks wiry strong. His swing looked slow and long in the two games I saw him play, and he was having trouble with pitches inside, which may have been an issue in Double-A. Scouts were mixed about him, some like him a lot, others think he’ll continue to struggle against better pitching.

"Wiry strong"

sound like Barney Fife. The swing assessment is no news – however, I’ve not seen an assessment of whether or not it can be addressed by someone who knows how to teach. Is this a fundamental flaw that will keep him a post-injured Baldelli-type guy as far as hitting goes (i.e. weak)?

may be more likely that morel gets moved around. positional flexibility is important for a guy like him. i would give up on the viciedo at third experiment but, if you believe KW, the organization hasn’t.

I agree that would make the most sense for Morel's development.

It will be an interesting decision though with the team’s needs beyond 2010. We already have CJ, Nix and Teahen that fit the utility role fairly well but we have holes at 3b and 1b, once Konerko is gone. It would be great for the sox if both pan out.
