oh, lil' Larry...
In the end, Dewayne Wise becomes more than a season or a catch or a blind refusal to quit; Dewayne Wise is where White Sox outfielders go when they die.

Also, Jim really says it best re: Punto. That guy is so good. Jim. Not Punto.
Few things give me a greater sense of schadenfreude than when Nick Punto unsuccessfully dives into first.
One item to add to that select list: Nick Punto unsuccessfully diving headfirst back into third base … after blowing through a stop sign … as he represents the tying run … with zero outs … in the late innings … of a playoff game … and an elimination game. That’s not merely schadenfreude — that’s a wet dream on plastic grass. And when it helps bring the baseball career of the Metrodome to a close, all the better!
"I heard 55,000 people screaming so I felt like the ball got through," Punto said. "I wanted to dig a hole, crawl inside it and hide. It’s embarrassing. That can’t happen."

I was going to pick an all decade team but he basically nailed it.
If i had to go with a righty starter (he only picked Buehrle) I would go with Jon Garland.
I think I would pick Damaso Marte over Matt Thornton… though it is very close between the two. They are by far the best set up men over the 10 years. Not many good righties. If i had to pick a righty set up man it would be Octavio Dotel who had more than 1 decent season…. the other contenders are Antonio Osuna, Flash Gordon and Cliff Politte- all who had 1 good year. This has been a source of trouble for the Sox since Barry Fucking Jones left in 1990!
Kenwo4life=ratings
Marte was a force
but, I’d have rather kept Guerrier. That would have been the righty setup man.
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love 2010
Marte provided immediate relief to a pen that desperately needed it.
but yes Guerrier would have been a better righty the last few years than we have had….. It is a troubling situation since there is no sure fire way to fix it. Linebrink was the top set up guy a few years ago and the Sox paid big money for him and you see where that has gotten us…. Macdougal seemed like a sure bet- that didn’t work out so well either. It is such a touchy position there is no sure way to fix it.
I say bring in a couple of reclamation projects and let a couple minor leaguers battle it out.

If he didnt look old, there would be something VERY wrong....
Escape from New York was 1981, nearly 30 years ago! As an FYI:
“Russell, like his father before him, had a baseball career. In the early 1970s, Russell played second base for the California Angels’ (now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) Double-A minor league affiliate, the El Paso Sun Kings. During a play, he was hit in the shoulder by a player running to second base; the collision tore the rotator cuff in Russell’s right/throwing shoulder. Before his injury, he was leading the Texas League in hitting, with a .563 batting average. The injury forced his retirement from baseball in 1973 and led to his return to acting.”

I'm taking Tombstone over
Unforgiven any day of the week, although both rank in the top 5 westerns since 1980 I think. Tombstone, Unforgiven, Silverado ? what else?
Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.
Not a big fan
But then there aren’t a ton of choices for post 1980 westerns. But I would take “Open Range” over 3:10 to Yuma.
Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

All about Othello
Shakespeare’s great for essentially inventing the motiveless villain, though his other play’s aren’t quite as strong sans Hamlet. Macbeth is pretty awful (Blood, blood, moar blood!). Though “Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth. Beware Macduff, beware the thane of fife, dismiss me enough” still sticks in my head for some reason. Even poorly conceived plots and motifs have good dialogue from sir Shakes.
Time to check on Amazon and see if Othello’s on DVD!

I do enjoy KB's Othello (as Iago, of course), but my favorite by far, is his Hamlet.

I haven't read it, but sounds more feasible than Macbeth/Oedipus
In terms of the hero being “mad,” prose is supposed to be pretty poor compared to his other works however. I’ll see if I can find a copy.

And since we were speaking of film adaptations...
Julie Taymor directed the film version of T.A., called “Titus.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, Alan Cumming… totally epic, 3 hours (IIRC), but visually very stunning.
The story is just twisted as all hell, but in terms of modern Shakespeare adaptations (as opposed to Branagh’s classical approach), this one’s pretty cool.

funny that this topic comes up — I’m taking a Shakespeare course this semester (out of frustration of too many references going right over my head. And it’s Shakespeare, so felt obligated to take a class devoted to his plays). Just wrote a paper on Caliban in The Tempest. I figured out half way through the paper that I didn’t like my topic but, seeing that the paper was due in 12 hours, ran with it.

Erik Walker almost dislocates a shoulder patting himself on the back in this article.
The fact is Earl Weaver figured out the winning approach to baseball back in the 70’s. Earl said almost the same thing but not near as eloquently as Walker. Earl believed in good pitching, solid defense and OPS. Team speed?
“Fuck team speed. I don’t need any of those cocksucking little fleas running around the fucking bases, getting picked off, getting thrown out stealing, making fucking outs. Give me those big cocksuckers that can hit the fucking ball out of the goddamn park.”

This is a good point though
Selling ideas to interested fans with open minds is a very different kettle of fish from selling ideas to men who have been acknowledged as important experts in their field and who have spent a lifetime acquiring a set of beliefs that they think work well. And the disdain for and sarcasm about such folk found in most books of analysis do nothing to ease the way.
