i was kinda shocked they would want the olympics in a 5th world country and not the greatest city of them all?

Nice jab, Q!’s Qrew!

Although NYC is a cesspool, I don’t quite think it’s a 5th world country. The place is alright, I guess, but you’re right that it’s no Chicago.

visa issues was the #1 obstacle for the us to get the bid

even for much smaller scale events, like the world music festival in chicago, there have been numerous artist cancellations because of the beaucratic process for getting the papers to enter the US

how do you think the bids polled in Madrid or Rio? 85% approval? 90%?

That is an excellent point.

Shine is off the Obama bloom world-wise. Like when McCain came back to DC a year ago Sept. to “help” with the financial crisis and got his butt handed to him <2 months later. Obama makes a personal pitch (with Shellie, no less!) and gets bounced the next day.

Oops.

that's overstated

The way the picks are done does a disservice to cities. If judges had to rate the cities, Chicago may have been everyone’s first or second pick.
The thinking seems to be that it really did come down to Rio vs Chicago and the IOC did everything it could to get Chicago out in the first round lest it have a chance to make it to the end and defeat Rio.

We have some of the greatest graphic designers in the world.

I bet Rio’s banner had multiple, uncomplimentary fonts and a distracting color scheme.

The analysis will say Daley’s biggest miscalculation was to have our banner held up by Bear cheerleaders ‘the Fridgettes.’

Chicago was a victim of its own percieved success

Most IOC members said they wanted Rio, because it would be the first Olympics in South America.

Some said they voted for some other city in the first round because they thought Chicago was a lock to advance.

So in the end, nobody voted for Chicago because everyone thought they were voting for Chicago.

At least I got to interview Scottie Pippen.

by 67WMAQ on Oct 2, 2009 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

You didn't get it because you didn't emphasize what fat bastards live there,

and how focus on exercise would help The Kids:

Chicago’s oldest athletic superstar said the city’s bid should have played down the beauty of its lakefront, the richness of its museums and the high quality of its hotels and restaurants. “I think we overplayed how much we enjoy our city,” said Adolph Kiefer, a Chicago native who won a gold medal swimming the backstroke at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
Instead, the bid should have emphasized the need for athletic role models in a city and nation teeming with overweight and under-exercised youth, said Mr. Kiefer, whose swimming-supply company just north of Chicago doubles as an advocacy organization for increasing youth access to pools and aquatic lessons. “We should have been talking about how these Games could help our battle against obesity and our plan for improved health in America,” said Mr. Kiefer, who at 91 still swims every morning.

Thank you God

From the first time I heard about the Olympic bid, all I could think of was what a NIGHTMARE the transportation and housing and everything else was going to be. Not to mention the huge debt. Daley saying the money wouldn’t come from the taxpayers’ pockets was BS. He would have found a way to make us pay for it eventually.

Congrats Rio on winning the Games. You can have ’em.

I find it ironic

that the city that coined the phrase “vote early and often” got totally blindsided by an important vote. It’s Politics 101 that you count the votes beforehand prior to the actual vote, and then if you’re short you start twisting arms to get things changed. There was obviously a lot of politicking going on before this thing even got to the Friday votes, and Chicago and the USOC were oblivious to what was going to hit them. The playa got played big time.

No animals were harmed during the making of this comment.

by ChicagoPete on Oct 3, 2009 4:57 AM CDT reply actions

If folks are not seeing this as a rather large changing of the guard,

prepare to be blindsided over and over the next decade or two. The US is far down the scale (until something blows up – then we are the World’s Policeman). It may not be a personal tragedy for Obama and his career but more of an indictment of how the rest of the non-white world feels about us.

We’d better start acting like adults and quit acting the fool. Brazil and China may be relatively recent to the power table, but make no mistake, that is where the power is/has shifted. They are the financial adults – we are the spoiled adolescents – at the finance table.
