Whether or not Greg Walker can screw him up.

not exactly
it means he hits around .300 with 10-20 HR power and not a ton of K’s. you can play good or poor defense. can’t be too fast or you’d be a “leadoff guy.” it helps if you’re white, but that’s not essential. see grace, mark.
by Hatchetm on Oct 23, 2009 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i guess he's fucked then
considering he’s pretty fast. he’s gotta hope that he slows down as he ages to have any chance.
by larry on Oct 23, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he could still fit the "scrappy leadoff" man role.
all he needs is a mouthful of long-cut tobacco.
i really miss tobacco chewing in baseball.
by Hatchetm on Oct 23, 2009 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah. the health benefits are great. just ask john danks.
by larry on Oct 23, 2009 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if tobacco added .005 to one's BA
there’d be a spitoon on every base.

no. someone would have it banned and decry those who use it as worse than baby rapists.

it would take a good 20 years before
the media decided to ask what those big brass cans were for.

seems a bit subjective to me - how does it apply in this case? (to Ciolli)
by hoodlight on Oct 23, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's highly subjective and essentially meaningless.
if you could read the blurb that follows it, it’s because he has a swing that scouts drool over, which is why i see potential, as well. whether being a “pure hitter” or whatever translates going forward is anyone’s guess.
by larry on Oct 23, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
ta - that's what I'd guessed
Ciolli needs to start showing some power for a corner man soon. doesn’t matter how pretty the swing is. Nice to have these kind of prospects though
by hoodlight on Oct 23, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he was 8th in his league in SLG.
obviously usual caveats for age, sample size, etc. he has gap power for sure, though the lack of home run ability is an issue.

While attempting to study for my econ/law test I was thinking...
is Konerko tradeable this off-season? Is there a market for him at one year, $12 million? And — although this is implied in the question — are there teams that would take him? I dunno… it just seems that his production could be replaced on this free agent market for about half of that $12 million. Of course, following through with that, the logical conclusion would be that other teams can/will see the exact same thing. I’m just wondering if teams might value Konerko’s consistency over some of the relative uncertainty (mainly injury related, but production perhaps too) of Nick Johnson, Troy Glaus and Russell Branyan (perhaps even Carlos Delgado? Or does his last injury relegate him to the DH category?).
Maybe it’s just my obsession with trading Konerko since, well, the minute he signed the 5/$60 contract. Granted, he has performed to expectations (worth the contract 2006 and 2009, not in the middle years), but if they can even shed his salary, it might be worth it…

I'd imagine
what you see, others see. Besides at this point like you said its only one more year. I just wish he’d stop his ridiculous defense of Greg Walker.

I just spoke to a client of mine - big Yankee fan -
who can’t wait for him to leave town. BWAHAHA. Where have we seen this story before? Guy lights up a new toddlin’ town in April/May, blows chunks at year-end and the fans scream for his exit.

It gets better - Check out the Yahoo Sports article on the right
All season, Yankees fans crowed on about Nick Swisher(notes), his great attitude and the overall sense of joie de vivre he brought to a traditionally stiff team.
And all season, knowing White Sox fans just nodded, smiled and said: “Just wait. His performance at the plate is going to end up driving you crazy and all that clubhouse joke won’t be so cute.”

hahaha - some great comments too
this is a no-brainer. The guy stinks right now. Bench ’em
Oh this is priceless reporting… “Down 0-2…he fought his way back to 3-2”.
What game were you watching? The Fuentes / Swisher deathmatch was like watching two nervous turtles fight over a pond rock. Neither one of ’em wanted to be there. Swish was ONLY going to get on by a walk — and Fuentes was terrified of throwing a strike.
Swishers a bum.
