Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Many Chicagoans have long complained that when they go to a White Sox game on the South Side, there aren't any restaurants or bars right outside the stadium like there are outside Wrigley Field when they go to Cubs game.

WBBM Newsradio 780's Steve Miller reports that a new plan for the area outside U.S. Cellular Field could change that.

Under the plan, the block where the original Comiskey Park once stood could become home to an entertainment complex that would hopefully bring more fans out to see White Sox games.

I was thinking a TGIF or Hooligan's...

Lord knows it won’t be anything good or authentic like McCuddy’s…

“The social history of baseball cannot be told or written without mention of Ma McCuddy and her family. Baseball players called her “Ma” with real afffection because she was for several decades, a mother to many of them. She created a little way station where there was love, kindness, good cheer, fun and understanding. She has meant much to some of these players, and hence to the game itself. It is no exaggeration to characterize her as one of the living legends of baseball.

“Mother,” Babe Ruth often used to say to her, “you’re the best woman in the world.”

Sometimes when Babe was playing in Chicago, he would send a message across the street. “Tell Ma to put six bottles of beer on ice – it’s two out in the ninth.”

It’s in my will that my ashes be scattered where the old Comiskey stood. Maybe by the time I kick I’ll be able to have them planted in a bar.

Meh.

I get why they want to replicate the frat-boy atmosphere of Wrigley, but it’s going to be nothing like that. A B-Dubs with a bunch of Sox memrobilia on the walls doesn’t exactly sound that intriguing.

Hopefully they attempt to get some non-franchise bars/restaurants in that location before they turn it into downtown Naperville.

I see where you are coming from

And I’m sure the first few places to come in will be lame. But I think you need to look at the bigger picture.

We get a couple bar and grill type places, a Buffalo Wild wings or whatever, a couple chain bars established, then it’s a lot easier for a non-franchise bar to come in. With the reputation that area has, you need the whole area to be improved, it’s not like you can just throw in a bar and it will survive on it’s own.

and the parking lots work as places tailgate

It'd turn a tolerable parking situation into a bit of a clusterfuck, besides

Hasn’t the interior of the park been mall-ified sufficiently? Or are the Sox looking to court a new crop of fans who just want to eat potato skins at 35th and Princeton and talk about how hot Q is?

I like the idea

I’ve been wanting to see the Sox do this for years.

If they do it properly (and of course, that’s a major ‘if’), it could serve as an anchor for the surrounding area and attract people to the area for more than 80 days a year. And it seems like it could be a good investment for Reinsdorf (didn’t he make his money in real estate?) And making the neighborhood more appealing to outsiders would be huge for attendance (look at the Cubs pre-gentrification).

Then again, I don’t live in the neighborhood and one man’s gentrification is another man’s loss of home.

There's a way to do it right.

There are a bunch of guys on Western Avenue in Beverly who clearly know how to run a bar.

The Sox should get in touch with Mr. Cork and Kerry, or Mr. 115 Bourbon St, and say “do what you do now, except at 35th and Shields.”

Speaking as a neighborhood resident…I want more drinking options. Gimme decent food, decent beer selections, decent eye candy, and decent prices, and I’ll be a happy guy.

The problem is right now, there’s not much nightlife. You’ve got the B-dub’s knockoff at 35th and Halsted, and a buch of corner taverns that are usually dominated by middle aged guys named Moose and Hacksaw who still live with their mom in a house their grandparents built.

They could also score major points by putting the bar/restaurant/shops into a building that looks kind of like the old ballpark.

I don't understand the downside of this.

I doubt it will be mandatory to frequent these establishments before and/or after games. For those that complain about the neighborhood, there will now be more to do. Anyone who doesn’t care to eat or drink there doesn’t have to. If the businesses fail, tough shit, it’s not our money.

I'm in favor of this

I think you people are paranoid about this becoming “Wrigleyville south.” As if a sports team could just will a Wrigleyville into existence anyway.

What’s so wrong with having a few bars near the park? Not all of us are OPOSes who drive to the games and have to be home by curfew.

by vince_ on Oct 31, 2009 9:14 AM CDT reply actions

vince, you're being stupid.

there are already so many frat boys who go to white sox games. i mean, the place is becoming overrun with them. if there were bars right outside the stadium, it would just become a frat boy convention. isn’t this obvious? and people would suddenly become fans of the white sox because there are restaurants outside the stadium and then there would be all these fair weather fans. all this is perfectly logical. i can’t understand why you don’t see it. don’t you remember how putting up all these monuments and statues turned the team into the yankees?

Hey - do the Sox benefit financially?

There is the potential of drawing more people to the new areas… but doesn’t the money generated go to the sports facility? Not to mention, will the offset of poss new tix sales have to deal with a reduced amount of food sales at the park?

Not to mention, this is a big loss of parking – I do believe the frat boys at Wrigley are the result of the high concentration of people (with money) in the immediate area. The amount of people brought the bars and rest., not the other way.

I guess I really don’t care, with the exception of the additional hassle of parking it may create.
