Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Bye.

  • John Danks reached 200 innings.
  • A.J. Pierzynski protected the first .300 season by a White Sox catcher by not playing.
  • Scott Podsednik will be exploring free agency.
  • The Chairman wants players to show up to Spring Training in shape.  That means you, Bobby.
  • OC didn't get his wish.  But there will be a Game 163 for the midget title again.
  • And the White Sox season ended with a double play.

The good news -- if Milwaukee holds on, the Sox pick 13th (although they may get it regardless -- not sure how the tiebreaker works)

so at least we’ve got that going for us.

And I don’t mind Podsednik getting paid somewhere else (although I’m not sure he’s going to get all that much, at his age and with his skill-set). He’s fine as a fourth outfielder, and perhaps a non-terrible option as a platoon partner, but I fear that Ozzie would give him waaaaay too many at-bats ahead of Rios next year in CF.

by CWSKeith on Oct 4, 2009 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

or you could just put him in left

Or if Peterson's "troublesome" back gives out. Because he's, you know, carrying the team. And some of those guys are heavy.

gotta love the Pods hate here.

He solved one of our biggest problems starting the season (leadoff) and was probably our most consistent offensive player all year. He is what he is but he did one helluva job for us this year not to mention what he did for the 05 team.

yeah league average offense at the top of the lineup

what a solution. and you managed to completely neglect defense.

He's not a good defensive player but he was better than our other corner outfielders this year.

And average offense at the top of our order was far better than what we started with. In terms of value, he was pretty damn good this year. Certainly better than Dye, whom we are all sniffling for, Quentin and most others on the team this year.

and that has what to do with whether he’s good enough to start for a competitive baseball team in 2010?

I'd like to upgrade too.

I hope we sign Figgins but I’m thinking he might cost more? He started for a pretty competitive team in 05 and the year he had this year, if repeated, would probably be good enough to start for a competitive team. Punto starts for a competitive team.

I’ve played ESPN for a coupla years and I just don’t get it… Your hitters hit .350 for the day, pitchers with sub 2 ERA’s,a stolen base or two, and I still drop 2 points a day. I think their particulars are just too restrictive. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, all in an all a ho-hum season. Never mounted a charge, no 10 game winning streaks… it was kinda over after MB’s perfecto. I’ll be attending Dodger & Angel post-season games and fill u clowns in.

Had a 10 point lead for most of the season

With various White Sox players of course (and cough Mark Reynolds and Albert Pujols cough), then had about 13 consecutive bad starts out of my starting pitching (incl. Danks and Buehrle), and the only guy who had any chance of catching me somehow had 20-30 consecutive good starts, granted he traded with the 2 worst teams in the league about 30 times so I’d say its a safe bet I won.

I would guess no unless they are willing to take on equal salary

Like the Garland-OCab trade. Even then, we’re not talking Crawford or even Upton. I think GM’s will be pretty circumspect about trading for a declining closer with a big salary that needs a 3 run lead to get a save.

So Danks, Jenks, Quentin, Pena, and Wise have arb? Kotsay is a FA correct?

and we have 71 million commited to next season if the sox pick up Garcia’s and Thorntons options.

that puts us at about 90 million with arb deals with a corner outfield spot and a DH spot to fill. How much will Pods cost? Kotsay? Say we’re at 95 million at the end, could we afford Figgins and move Becks to second?

Or if Peterson's "troublesome" back gives out. Because he's, you know, carrying the team. And some of those guys are heavy.

after listing the score and whatnot for the sox game it reads, “granderson makes diving catch on quentin fly ball with men on 1st and 2nd to end the 8th inning.”
it should read,“with 2 on and 2 out in the 8th inning granderson completely misjudged a flyball to short left center then proceeded to run around like a chicken with his head cut off. he eventually got himself pointed in the right direction and had to run at full speed (which luckily for him is considerable) and dive to catch a fly ball that many outfielders would have camped underneath and caught standing motionless.”

and by the way, i believe that’s the 3rd ball i’ve seen him butcher in the last week. he had at least 2 against minnesota that i saw on highlights that he wasn’t able to recover on. anyone else see those?

scott podsednik exceeded what most of us could probably expect from him offensively this season

and that was pleasant to witness BUT at best he was an average outfielder (WPA = 0 for 2009 restricted to outfielders, see fangraphs) because he’s uber shitty on D.

..and this is his first ‘relatively’ full season without going to the DL since when? the dude with the hot wife was on the DL in 2005, so i’m gonna flag all you motherfuckers who keep clinging on to 2005 like a fucking blanket.

folks who think he could repeat his numbers in 2010 are dreamers and should only be allowed to post their thoughts on the right rail.

Is he average or uber-shitty?

Will Pods repeat this year’s average (but better-than-we-had) numbers? Probably not.

But you’d be hard-pressed to find a single person who expected him to do half of what he did for us offensively this year. And sadly, his average performance was worlds better than with what we started.

That’s the beauty of baseball, ain’t it? Expect the unexpected.
I don’t think you have to be a dreamer or a relegated to the RR if you follow that philosophy.

nyet.

WPA is a fairly blah stat. it measures the change in average win expectancy after the individual in question’s plate appearances. so those who happen to come up “clutch” rate better, but defense has nothing to do with it.

Pods was a 1-1.5 WAR player. the one thing we’re less than sure of is his fielding (somewhere bad, but not exactly how bad), but figuring his wins above replacement is still the same: offensive runs above average + defensive runs above average + replacement adjustment + position adjustment. using .333 wOBA for average and prorating to 600 PAs/150 defensive IP in left field, the arithmetic looks thus:

2.5 + 0 + 20 – 7.5 = 15 RAR = 1.5 WAR

If you think he was a below average left fielder, adjust the total. And if wOBA doesn’t account for pick offs, adjust further. Either way, his performance was at best relatively good; our outfield was such a shitfest that he looked good by comparison. I’m not about to get caught up in that past the surprise and hilarity experienced at the time that our season so often rested in Pods’ hands.

i agree with everything above that you said

but given his injury history and his offensive output in recent years, the probability for him to put up similar in 2010 is a pipedream.

Perhaps. Or maybe he's just finally healthy and seeing the ball better with the guidance of Earlybird Walker.

I expect nothing and I’d prefer that we don’t rely on him as DH next season.
But who really knows what happened to Pods… I honestly didn’t expect him (or his bottled lightning) to last through this season.

by homesickalien on Oct 5, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

i know what happened to Pods

it’s a classic case of inflated BABIP. even if he’s “finally healthy”, who cares? that doesn’t make him rare or good. kotsay’s performance is proof enough that finding 2009 Pods production isn’t hard.

by colintj on Oct 5, 2009 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

one could posit that at least part of his increased babip came from being able to leg out infield hits

which would likely be related to the health of his legs and perhaps his approach at the plate. i don’t have his infield hits at my fingertips, though.

by larry on Oct 5, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

IFH% is on fangraphs

and it was well above his career average, so there’s that. i think it’s just hard in general to consistently leg out infield hits and luck (as in “i hit that one slightly too hard/soft/too far to the left/right,” etc.) plays a big factor. though i assume his health contributed to his ability to pick up IFH.

He is also slapping at the ball more, especially with 2 strikes.

His contact rate is better because of that it appears. He has really changed his approach this season. I wonder if Walker had anything to do with it? I doubt it.

This can't be right! According to Cowley, he had no friends:

Miguel Cabrera had a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when he was involved in a physical altercation with his wife early Saturday morning, according to the Birmingham Police.

Cabrera had been partying with buddies from the Chicago White Sox after Friday night’s game at Birmingham’s Townsend Hotel, Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said.

But when he got home, his wife wasn’t happy he’d been out drinking so late, Patterson said. Roseangel Cabrera called 911 at 6:05 a.m. to report the two were fighting, according to reports.

“He was out late, came home and his spouse didn’t appreciate that, I guess and it got into an argument,” Patterson said. Police took Cabrera to the police station for questioning, including help from a Michigan State Police interpreter.

According to the police report, Cabrera’s wife, whose name is listed as Rosangel, was upset when the ballplayer woke up the couple’s 4-year-old daughter and was talking on the phone when he came home. Investigators noticed his wife had an injury to her lower lip; they noted the injury to the left side of Cabrera’s face.

i was most surprised by the K rate

you think he’ll ever be ready for the majors? Kenny’s track record is pretty good and i thought he’d be traded…but in a package for something more worthwhile than Tony Pena.

by colintj on Oct 5, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

i think he'll be an average or so 1B.

he is a guy with a milb career k rate in the upper 20%s so being that high in his initial foray isn’t surprising. he kept a good walk rate. no guarantees, of course, but i stand by my final ETA for him of june 2010.

by larry on Oct 5, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

he's been at 22.5% in his career since A ball

i didn’t think he’d nearly double that. but, it’s still just 100 PA. and if you’re right, Pena is going to have to be Jenks/Thornton good to win that deal from a WAR perspective. makes it worse considering the money. otoh, if he’s only 50/50 to make average, it’s probably a break even deal.

by colintj on Oct 5, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

even if kenny thought it was only 20-30%

i don’t see why Pena is so special that Allen couldn’t be packaged elsewhere. he’s been a ROOGY for his career, so unless he’s getting another pitch you’re just overreacting to a big fastball.

fangraphs said 94.8 this year

93-95 from watching him a few times. he’s gotten ripped apart by lefties so far. i’m not sure what his movement is like, but i checked a few brooks pages. he threw a few with good rise to run and a few that were blah. his slider appears to be meh and i thought i saw a third change-like pitch. he’s going to need some work to become a legit Bobby replacement. until then he’ll shut the door against RHB and shit the bed against LHB.

His bat hasn't changed

and it remains to be seen how good his defense is. The expected difference between the two in ‘08 was probably 1.5 WAR and 1 WAR in ’09. That was probably worth Gio and DLS given the fact that the Sox are almost always in the ’sweet spot’ where the marginal difference of a win or two is worth a lot more.
