Turning in the Grades
With the 2009 season officially coming to a close, it is time for the annual report cards. Since I am the teacher, I will be the first to turn in my grades on the 2009 White Sox.
AJ Pierzynski: The backstop had an above average season. He is the first catcher to finish with a .300 average in Sox history. AJ only managed to crank 13 homers and drove in 49 runs. I would have liked to see more run production out of him, but he was one of the very few consistent hitters in the Sox lineup. Overall, he called good games, blocked bad pitches and struggled throwing runners out. Final Grade- B.
Paul Konerko: The captain had a much better season in 2009 than he did in 2008. He led the club with 28 homers, was surprisingly consistent for most of the year and finished with a .277/.353/.489. He played extremely good defense and totaled 59 extra base hits and threw in a rare stolen base for good measure. I don't think you could have expected him to do much more than he did under the best circumstances this season. Final Grade- B+
Gordon Beckham: The Savior came to us in June and after a rough start to his career ended up with a .270/.347/.460 line. 28 doubles, 14 homers and 63 RBI's later and He looks like a future star for many years to come. Throw in the fact that he learned 3rd base on the fly and improved by leaps and bounds, and the sky is the limit. The average dipped in the final month a bit, but you couldn't have expected much more from Beckham. Final Grade- A-
Alexei Ramirez- The Cuban Missile really struggled the first month and a half of the season, even being benched at one point for 3 games. He rallied late to end up at .277/.333/.389. His power numbers dipped a bit as he only managed 30 extra base hits and 68 RBI's. He threw in 14 SB's. In the field, Ramirez made some incredible plays and botched some very easy ones. He did come a long way from his terrible April/May so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Final Grade: C+
Jermaine Dye- JD started out like a beast, sticking over .300 with 20 homers at the all star break. From then on, however, it was all down hill for the former World Series MVP. Dye finished the season on a terribly bad note and wound up sticking .250/.340/.453. He did total 27 homers and 81 RBI, each good for 2nd on the team. He made some good plays in the outfield when he could get to the ball, however, he can't get to too many anymore. I'd like to grade him higher, however I can't look past his horrendous finish. Final Grade: C-
Scott Podsednik- Scotty Pods was brought in on a minor league deal, and arrived in the bigs May 1st. He went on to lead the team with 163 hits, a .304 BA, 6 triples and 30 stolen bases. His base running was sometimes maddening, as was his outfield play, but if anyone would have told you in Spring Training that Scott Podsednik would lead the Sox in most offensive categories you would have shat yourself. For that, only one grade is possible. Final Grade: A
Carlos Quentin- Quentin was coming off of a self inflicted injury to his wrist, but did show power early in the season. Then his foot problems put him on the DL for quite awhile. Quentin managed to come back and play in 99 games this season. His average was in the .230's for most of the season, but he enjoyed a late surge the last week of 2009 to put his power numbers at 21 homers and 56 RBI's. His left field play was suspect at best and awful at worst. Final Grade- D+
Chris Getz- Getz had a decent rookie season in the big leagues, hitting .261 with 25 stolen bases. Numerous injuries, however, only put him on the field for 107 games. He played solid defense at Second Base, and at times looked very solid with the stick. As with Quentin, however, if you want good grades from KenWo, you better show up to class. Final Grade- C-
Alex Rios- Rios was acquired from the Blue Jays for nothing but 60 million dollars and played like he was worth .60 cents in his time with the Sox, hitting .197 with 3 homers in his 150 plate appearances. It was comforting to have an outfielder who could close the gap well, but coming to a club in contention and proceeding to take a dump will not earn you a passing grade. Final Grade- F
Jim Thome- Thome did what Thome does. Low average, good power, high on base percentage. He did what was expected of him and probably would have led the club in HR's and RBI had he stayed aboard. 2009 was nothing special for Mr. Incredible by any means, but he met expectations. Final Grade- B
Jayson Nix- The primary utility man for the Sox showed some signs of pop, hitting 12 homers in 255 AB's. He did strike out a whole bunch and wasn't as solid in the field as we all would have hoped. Final Grade- C
Ramon Castro- Caught Jose Contreras for a string of good starts and caught Mark Buehrle's Perfect Game. Other than that, he didn't bring much to the table. Final Grade- F
Mark Kotsay- After he was brought over for Brian Anderson, Kotsay batted .303 for the Sox, with 3 homers and 18 RBI in only 109 ABs. He played well at first base and in right field and contributed more to Chicago in 2 months than Anderson did in 4 seasons. He also has a hot wife. Final Grade- A
Dewayne Wise- Started the season as the starting CF, didn't last long, made historic catch and threw a bunch of runners out in limited time. Final Grade- D
Brent Lillibridge- Hit .158 with a late surge to get to 3 RBI's. Had cool theme music, but it isn't enough to pass him. Final Grade- F
Wilson Betemit- Played 3rd base like a bad little leaguer. Final Grade- F
Josh Fields- Was given the starting 3rd base job, and had it taken away by a guy who played another position and was less than a year into his professional career. Horrible defense, can't hit a fastball. Final Grade- F
Pitchers
Mark Buehrle- Mark had a great first half and threw one of the most memorable games in White Sox history. Struggled down the stretch when he was needed most, but still posted 13 W's, 3.84 ERA and 213 IP. Also smacked a homer. Final Grade- B
John Danks- Danks finished the season 13-11 and led the starters with a 3.77 ERA. He wasn't as consistent as he was in 2008, but did indeed put up another solid MLB season. He totaled 200.1 innings and 149 strikeouts. Final Grade- B
Gavin Floyd- Gavin wasn't as spectacular as he was in 2008. He struggled early on, then was dominant and then developed a hip issue which hindered his last handful of starts. Only walked 59 guys while striking out 163 in 193 innings while finishing 11-11. Final Grade- B
Freddy Garcia- Garcia started 9 games for the Sox after struggling with injuries the past few years. He came up and posted a 3-4 record with a 4.34 ERA, and really did pitch better than those numbers. While his velocity is still down, he found a way to get guys out. Final Grade- B+
Jake Peavy- Peavy was immaculate in his 3 starts, going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA. He struck out 18 in 20 innings and gave the Sox faithful reason to be joyous for 2010. However, he blocked an earlier trade which would have sent him to the Sox and then got injured. By the time the Sox did acquire him, he needed a lot of rehab time (even more so after taking a liner off the arm). One can only wonder how this season would have turned out if he accepted the trade in May. However, I can only grade him on the time he spent here. Final Grade- A
Jose Contreras- Contreras came back from a major injury to secure a spot in the rotation. He went on to prove he wasn't quite ready as he couldn't control his splitter. He came back from the minors and had a nice run, before a series of self-induced collapses led him to be dealt to the Rockies. Finished 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA. Final Grade- D-
Bartolo Colon- Colon was 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA, but injuries and a lack of commitment to the organization lead to his demise. Final Grade- F
DJ Carrasco- This guy saved the pitching staff numerous times this season. Finished 5-1 with a 3.76 ERA and kept the Sox in many games they would have otherwise been blown out in. Pitched 93 innings out of the bullpen and was there any time he was needed. DJ did a remarkable job in 2009. Final Grade- A
Matt Thornton- Thornton has become the premier left handed set up man in all of baseball. He finished 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 87 K's in 72.1 innings. Showed late in the season he may be ready to close in 2010. Final Grade- A
Bobby Jenks- Jenks finished 3-4 with a 3.71 ERA while Saving 29 games at an 82.8 percent clip. His strike out to walk ratio was good at 16:49 in 53.1 innings, yet he had a tough time staying healthy. Jenks was passable when available, but wasn't very reliable in 2009. Final Grade- B-
Scott Linebrink- Linebrink was pretty terrible in 2009. He posted a 3-7 record with a 4.66 ERA (I can't believe it was that low). It seemed like he only could throw his fastball for strikes. Hopefully he finds it next year because with his contract, he will be back despite the Final Grade- F
Octavio Dotel- Octavio would sometimes blow up, but for the most part posted a good season in 2009. He finished 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA and struck out 75 over 62.1 innings. I'm not so sure why the Sox are throwing him out the door. He wasn't spectacular but wasn't bad either. Final Grade- C+
Tony Pena- Pena came aboard midseason and went on to appear in 35 games for the Sox. He had some good moments, but most will remember him for giving up a few walk off hits. He finished 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA while wearing silver and black. Final Grade- C
Randy Williams- Williams pitched in 25 games for the Sox and did a credible job when he was put in his situation of getting out lefties. Troube came about when he was asked to do more than that leading to an 0-1 record with a 4.58 ERA. Struck out 22 over 17.2 innings and looks like a decent LOOGY option. Final Grade- C
Clayton Richard- Richard was a roller coaster. Sometimes he looked unbelievable and others he looked awful. He wasn't very good coming out of the bullpen early on and can't throw to first on a grounder, but he did net us Peavy with some solid performances midseason. Final Grade- C
Dan Hudson- Hudson pitched 18.2 late season innings capping off his rise from the A level. He looked like a very viable option for the near future. Very limited sample size, but Final Grade- A.
Management
Ozzie Guillen (and staff)- Ozzie had what I believe to be his best season as manager in 2008. In 2009, it was the exact opposite. He was late on making changes to the lineup, very bad on utilizing his bullpen and ranted way too often for anyone other than Bobby Knights liking. He mishandled the Rios acquisition and for the most part was a move behind all season long. Final Grade- D
Kenny Williams- We came into the season with no legit CF, 2 injury prone starting pitchers and a failure waiting to happen at 3rd base. He provided no replacements for Nick Swisher (FNS) and Javier Vazquez. He did pick up Podsednik, who turned out to be gold, and did bring in Peavy and Rios for not only 2009 but many years to come. His move of Brandon Allen for Tony Pena will be questioned like it was Gio Gonzalez. He did acquire a nice bench player in Mark Kotsay for Brian Anderson. Final Grade- C-.... with a chance to improve with solid years to come from Rios/Peavy.
CHICAGO WHITE SOX- FINAL GRADE- C This team was almost the definition of average. They finished 79-83, didn't go on too many long losing streaks or winning streaks, just kind of pissed the season away.

Excellent recap of the season.
I think Jenks may be the teacher’s pet but overall I’d say you were very fair in assigning grades. Rec’d.
If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be -- Yogi Berra
yes. nice job.
while i may have a quibble here or there, the only one i would bother challenging is in regards to podsednik. first of all, i suppose one could give him an A when factoring in what was expected of him, but i just can’t do it. i could live with just the poor defense, but his baserunning is just so insulting and hurtful that it is beyond all reason.
second, you seem to be saying that podsednik led the sox in most offensive categories. i’m not seeing this. he is the leader in avg.,hits, sb, and triples. (and caught stealing and pickoffs) he’s tied with konerko for the lead in obp, but only because thome was traded. that leaves a lot of categories he did not lead in.
anyway, put me in the camp that could probably stomach pods being back next year only if it’s for one year and only if he does not start regularly.
(and one more time for my man buehrle. he led the team in slg, ops, ab/hr and the always coveted p/pa.)
the suck is not just a river in ireland.
I am not a Pods fan
and am firmly against him returning as anything more than an insurance policy…. but as much as I dislike him… he had the best season of all the White Sox hitters. Which is why we aren’t playing anymore.

kenwo, you are obviously the shiznit.
but pods hit worse than Thome, Konerko, Dye and Beckham.

Let the Quibbling Commence....
Dye gets a C-? Cmon, is he dating your sister or something? Rios had a better second half than him- We would have won more games if Wise was our fulltime RF instead of Dye. You give Q a D+ and Rios an F, and yet mr. slow legs and no range, rally killer extraordinaire gets a C-? what the heck are you smoking?

Carrying a team for the first half is worth something.
by Grinder in Training on Oct 5, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions
It's worth more than completely disappearing in the 2nd half?
Add into that he’s probably the worst defensive RF in the game (maybe Adam Dunn), it’s not like this evens out for the Sox. They paid 12 million for an OPS under 800 and terrible defense.
The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.

JD is a pretty easy player to evaluate this year.
he was worth something in the first half. then he gave all that back in the second half. just like his offense is worth something. but he gives all that back with his defense.

I would agree if he was not AWOL
for the entire months of July, August and September. That does not equate to a grade of average. Not only did he not help the team, he actively hurt it by his dismal performance at the plate.

That was the grade I struggled the most with.
He did dominate in April, May and June…. I would have given him an A for the first half….. He sucked in July, August and September, I would have given him an F for the second half…. Hence the C-.

Seems reasonable to me.
Overall his season numbers are pretty average.. = C-

Not bad, though I'd rank Peavy "Inc."
because of SSS and the fact that he was unable to pitch more. I’d agree w/ the good Doctor that JD was more like a D-to-D-.
Ozzie was not a D, more like a B-/C+, as he handled his pitchers well and his starting line-up haphazardly. I’d lower Danks to a B- (he just did not step up when needed – too many dingers) and would lower Buehrls to a B- (yes, even with the perfecto) for his post-perfect game stench. Jenks was a C – nothing above expectation (other than flaming out the last month, which seems to be his pattern lately). PK was a B – look at how he is compared to other first basemen in the league (he ought to be a DH).
But not bad, Teacher. Not bad.
I was a Catholic boy, Redeemed through pain, not through joy - Jim Carroll
I was going to give him an Incomplete
but he was damn good in his 3 games so I decided to grade him on his completed work. Hence the A
Kenwo4life=ratings
like others have said, the JD grade is off.
he was essentially a replacement level player. even if i’m not considering that this motherfucker was paid $10, $12 million, he was essentially useless.
other than that, can’t really argue much.
Just like some teachers do in schools
he may have gotten the bump because he was one of the “favorites”. Like I said earlier…the basis was A for first half, F for second half= C- since the 2nd half gets a little more weight on it. I suppose I could be grading him with sunshine and rainbows in the background though since he is one of my favorites.

Gotta say nice recap...
I agree with the consensus of the rest of the detention crowd in stating that Dye should be in the “D” range.
I believe if we could have gotten our moneys worth for Linebrink, Dye and Q! this season we would be in the playoffs.
You didn’t give Greg Walker a grade, so I will for you —he gets expelled.
"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."
A few quibbles here and there, but overall I think you were fair. Good work, Kenwo.
...take your hobbit circle jerk to another thread
by larry on May 18, 2009 8:58 PM PDT
Wait you gave Konerko a what?
That must have hurt. Not bad Kenwo. As others have said Dye is down.
Pods is not an A baserunning and defense.
I think you are too hard on injury grades (but at least you are consistent) I’d raise Getz and Q a little.
Floyd is a B+ this year.
Ozzie B- a few more mistakes than I am used to.
KW – C – Largely because of Swisher. I don’t have a problem with Vaz trade. Starting pitching wasn’t the problem anyway.
I could see a C for the team but for me its more like C-, D+. Quite simply this team beat themselves too often and gave away a very winnable division.
"Oh well back to work"
Ozzie a B-?
No way… if his mom called and he did a lot of extra credit maybe I could give him a C… thats as high as he goes. He did a bad job this year. The team was unprepared… look no further than their record against shitty rookies…isn’t that the manager and his staffs main job?
Kenwo4life=ratings
You were more than fair with Ozzie/coaches.
They were fundamentally as bad as any sox team I’ve ever seen. Oz was a bigger asshole than usual with the way he handled Beckham and Poreda’s arrival and was way too stubborn with moving Linebrink out of the 8th inning. Cox was terrible and Walker got to the park earlier than anyone, so he gets a pass. Don’t let his mom talk you out of the D.
If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be -- Yogi Berra
Why are you still dwelling on the way he handled Beckham.
If Beckham didn’t care, you shouldn’t. It didn’t hurt his production so it’s a moot point.
I think Beckham would have hit .403 if not for Ozzie.
He may not care but I had money on it.
If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be -- Yogi Berra
Are you for real?

most of this is pretty pointless in regards to Ozzie
I actually quite enjoy his media rants.
"Oh well back to work"
Agreed!
And Ozzie does what he can with the lineup he has been given. He hit magic in the bottle last year with OC and AJ. And this year, he had a lead off hitter to work with. Putting Pods in DH I thought was a strange but effective move.

I guess. I put more of that on Walker anyway.
Ozzie’s strength has always been his managing of a staff. He had some hiccups this year but still a very solid year there. The Sox success on the mound has a lot more to do with Ozzie than people give credit IMO. And the ridiculous offensive numbers in the 2nd half definitely wasn’t his fault. I get you don’t like Ozzie.
"Oh well back to work"
the Linebrink thing sucked.
but i’ll grant for a while he had Thorny and no one else to turn to. Ozzie needs to learn that means it’s Oney time if the same thing happens next year.

the shitty rookie thing
is a product of their right handedness more than anything imo. i really doubt the Sox are giving away games for something that could be fixed that easily.

2B myth
Can we please dispel the myth that Chris Getz is a ‘solid defender’ and that Nix ain’t?
Nix’s UZR/150 and Fielding Bible numbers at 2B: +9.7 / +6
Getz’s: -5.5 / -8
not even close…
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
Getz proved to be more sure handed.
I agree Nix shows more range but neither Getz nor Nix has played enough innings at the position to say it’s not even close. With his speed, Getz should be better in time with his reads and reaction off the bat. He was primarily a ss his whole life, so he should have upside at 2b. Nix shows excellent range but hasn’t been as sure handed as we’ve heard that he is. I think that will improve too the more innings he gets. If we could combine their talents both offensively and defensively, we’d have an all-star. Unfortunately, we have 2 mediocre 2nd basemen.
If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be -- Yogi Berra
No, Nix is also a better offensive player
Nix (OPS+, wOBA): 83 / 0.319
Getz: 74/ 0.312
IMO, Nix should get the majority starts at 2B next year. Obviously he won’t, bc, as we know, Getz is left-handed and faster and therefore a better player.
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
Until Nix proves he can hit right handers at all, I'd keep him in the utility role.
If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be -- Yogi Berra
moot point
Getz’s OPS vs RHP: 0.675
Nix’s OPS vs RHP: 0.621
not exactly compelling evidence for Chris….
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
Getz will get majority of the starts at 2B because Ozzie doesn't like Nix's game. From Our Chuck's interview...
Guillen said he sent messages to both rookies (Nix and Lillibridge). "They don’t play the way they have to play. They struck out too much. Offensively, they want to play a big man game when they’re little. (If they do that), they’re not going to go with me, because we need those guys to be better offensively than we had this year."
fuck me, does that mean Lillibridge is gonna make the team next year?
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
he didn't notice the friggin HR?!
i hope that’s posturing.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing. - Trooper
actually, minor league Total Zone shows the same difference in their fielding skills.
I think Getz is probably better than that, but i couldn’t ever understand the Getz over Nix crowd. it’s all about range, baby.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing. - Trooper
Getz is white and grindy (i.e. can't hit for power), so it seems like he should play good D
How many of Nix’s errors were at 2B? Most, but not all…I know UZR over a small sample size means nothing but Nix’s range, arm, and turn looked a lot better than Getz’s to me.
by hitlesswonder on Oct 5, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions
well...
UZR is certainly more reliable as the sample size increases. Fielding Bible’s Plus/Minus system, I think, is more reliable over small sample sizes since it’s is based on human scouts reviewing video of each play and assigning a score (as opposed to UZR’s mathematical approach).
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
If Getz would stay healthy we might see some improvement in his O and D
and he may be white but his base running was ridiculous this year and valuable if he can keep it up next year.
His individual BP EQBRR was 6.22 5th in baseball. The next closet Sox was Pods at 1.5 ish.
"Oh well back to work"
D Wise is our best defensive OF, that doesn't mean he's not best suited for a bench role
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
I'm not excited by the prospect of a 2B platoon, or Ozzie randomly playing one more than the other
Both are low-upside, we’ve pretty much seen what they’re going to bring. Going after Figgins is probably a pipe-dream, but I wish they had the cash to at least go after Polanco.

I'd give Alexei a higher grade
I guess salary isn’t taken into account, but at his current salary he has more than C value. He was healthy and posted an acceptable OPS (.723) for a SS. I think he was actually average with the glove. Given that his BB skyrocketed (you know…relatively) and his D improved I’m pretty happy with his season. Right now, he looks like he can be league average for very over the next couple of seasons.
I didn't take salary into account...just performance.
He was pretty average in my opinion this year. I expected more.
Kenwo4life=ratings
I have to agree
He hit just under 300 last year, and his glove was working much better. Too many errors this year from the young cuban.

Nice job overall
I'll give the whole season a C-
2007 was more entertaining just for the magnitude of sheer suck on display. Other than the perfecto and Beckham’s debut this one was bland and forgettable. Put this one in the dumpster and bring on 2010.
The front four of the rotation is arguably the best in baseball, let’s see what KW surrounds them with this winter. I suspect we won’t see any more softball teams on the south side for quite some time.

It would be a big mistake to try and make them the 80s Cardinals. You need to hit 200 homers to be competitive. We fell 16 short this season. Nothing wrong with a softball team if you have the right players.
