Who Was Buying Miguel Cabrera's Drinks Friday Night?

By now you've heard that Miguel Cabrera got into a three-times-the-legal-limit drunken brawl with his wife early Saturday morning. I had actually read that Cabrera had clearly been in a fight a few hours before gametime on Saturday, and he had obvious bruising showing in his rare TV closeups, so the fight itself isn't exactly news (at least not to us). What is news however, is that "Cabrera had been partying with buddies from the Chicago White Sox after Friday night's game at Birmingham's Townsend Hotel."

That is significantly more interesting...

So who were the bad influences?

Do you wanna fill out the official SB*N baseball post-season awards ballot

I’ve refrained for 2 years in a row now — We get two ballots, just like the real media (aren’t we cute?)

by The Cheat on Oct 5, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I suppose that means those who want to take my vote should contact me via email...

I’ll decide who receives the one (or two) ballots based on the same criteria I use for front-pagitude, genitalia and sexual favors.

not the first time for miggy
In the August incident, according to the information, a man told Birmingham police that he and an unnamed teen encountered Cabrera at the Rugby Grille on Aug. 31 about 6:30 p.m. Cabrera allegedly asked the teen, who weighs about 300 pounds, “What’s up, big boy? You need to work out,” according to the information provided to The News.

The teen then asked Cabrera to stop taunting him and said, “Let me be.”

But it became confrontational, the man told police: Cabrera allegedly challenged the man and the teen. “Let’s go right now. I’ll fight both of you right now. Let’s go outside.” At one point, the man told police he felt that Cabrera intimated that he had a gun, saying he was going to go to his vehicle and get his “click-clack” and making a motion with his hands that he interpreted as the racking of a handgun.

Richard Fenton, the Tigers security representative, told police that he later searched Cabrera’s vehicle and did not find a weapon, and he said Cabrera indicated he did not have a gun. The incident prompted the Tigers to hold a meeting with Cabrera, General Manager Dave Dombrowski and a team lawyer, Fenton told police. It was then that Cabrera was told to stay out of the Townsend.

"click clack"

I am sure that was what Uribe said before he pulled out his shotgun and fired.

well

i’d take the over on Beckham’s projection, though if he’s more like a .270/.330/.450 hitter, i’d much prefer he play short. here’s the approximate WAR prorated to 600 PA/150 IP if we eyeball the defense from fangraphs and convert the slash line to wOBA:

AJ: -10 D/-3 O ~ 2 WAR
PK: 2.5/13.5 ~ 2.4
Getz: 0/-8 ~ 1.5
Savior: 0/6 ~ 2.9
Che: 0/2 ~ 3.0
Q: -7/15 ~ 2.0
Rios: 3/2 ~ 2.8

Looks like a pretty typical Kenny team. Great pitching, average position players. Keep in mind that if we add a replacement level RF and DH, that would still be 6~7 wins better than the ‘09 position players. If there’s $10-15MM to play with, I’d really like to go after Chone. He switch hits, can play plus D seemingly anywhere and had a real breakout after he turned 30. Ideal would be Thome, Chone and some rotation fodder. Balanced lineup, good defense, great pitching.

Re: RF and DH -- they were below replacement level this year?

I could probably buy RF, what with Dye’s miserable defense. DH though? Is an .810 OPS (for Sox DHs) really below replacement level? Or did you mean to say that if the Sox add average-level RF and DH for 2009 they’d add 6-7 wins?

I’m certainly with you on your end — build the 2009 team around great pitching and good defense — but I’m still not sure about your means — Figgins. I just think the Sox would have to commit too many years. I’m definitely with you on bringing back Thome (although I had Flowers pegged as a backup plan in case Thome finally reaches the cliff, but ZiPS doesn’t like Flowers very much). That third OF spot is the question mark. Is Byrd’s bat for real? Even if he’s only, say, league average, his glove alone is worth several wins over Dye (and him + Thome wouldn’t even likely cost $10 million combined for 2010). I’d love to have Mike Cameron on a short deal too. I’m fine with the 2B situation — the glut of slightly below average-ness that the Sox have there (with CJ as a backup plan — I’ve asked Dan to add his projection).

by CWSKeith on Oct 5, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DH was not below replacement

i was just saying that when you look at the total WAR from this season for the Sox and compare that to the total from the ‘10 ZiPS WAR i figured, the difference is 6-7 wins. so if we stick replacement level players at RF and DH (the two spots i didn’t fill in with anyone), we’d still be 6-7 wins better if those prorated projections panned (alliteration ftw!) out. we were just awful position-wise. only the royals were worse in the AL. second best pitching though.

as for Chone, i’ve been throwing him around b/c someone linked to a Gregor post that said he only wanted 10 and 3. i’m just looking for a real lefty bat and some defense. i’m not sure if there’s a non-leet FA out there that qualifies and plays the OF. AJ is the only of the former on the team. Getz could qualify with a breakout of some kind and Q! sort of qualifies with his injury problems and reverse splits.

"Play plus D anywhere"

In the infield, or outfield, too? I’ve heard he’s Podsish when it comes to the latter, and UZR seems to agree.

just being over the top

i’ll go with UZR and say infield only. but a Getz replacement is a decent idea, since he’s got low upside and health issues.

how does AJ not have the runaway with this?

octavio dotel? really?

Or if Peterson's "troublesome" back gives out. Because he's, you know, carrying the team. And some of those guys are heavy.

seems to me

this may not have been a “beating his wife” scenario and more of a drunken struggle over his cell phone. but perhaps i’m one to draw a line between straight out smacking your wife and that. either way, sounds to me like miggy might have a little alcohol problem that should be addressed so he doesn’t cross that perhaps arbitrary line i drew.

It’s just a shame Miggy’s wife had to trip and fall into a doorknob and mar the whole display
