Just surprised he was not voted higher.

Lots of intangibles – new, unforgiving city, expectations through the roof, toughest division in baseball, and he performed quite up to expectation. Thought he might be ahead of Halladay, though am not complaining.

Steve Forbes is about to talk. Must listen.

Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)3-K2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded. FIP was invented by Tangotiger.

I know about it

I thought WAR had usurped it as a measurement

by hoodlight on Nov 11, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

probably wouldn't use it for position players, either,

for the purpose we’re discussing here. WAR is a useful tool for coming up with an approximation of the value of a player. but it’s not like WAR or any other single statistic encompasses everything. and WAR for pitchers is based on FIP which everyone acknowledges has some issues.

by larry on Nov 11, 2009 1:26 PM CST up reply actions

i should clarify

that i mean just going to fangraphs and using their WAR data, which is based on FIP. you can, of course, calculate WAR with other inputs. if you want to see how different things can be for a pitcher based upon which inputs you use, see this:

http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/10/28/1104776/ricky-nolasco-4-war-or-1-war

by larry on Nov 11, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

same six players are top six in WAR

just a different order – didn’t realise that Gavin was in position 8, he had a great year.

by hoodlight on Nov 11, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

wonderful.

perhaps, however, there is something(s) that isn’t being counted that one pitcher is good at and another isn’t that would change things. pitcher defense certainly isn’t included. or you think verlander feasted on al central competition. or mr. social anxiety benefited from playing for a shite team that was not competitive. or you disagree entirely with basic assumptions that fangraphs – or whoever – is using to calculate WAR.

by larry on Nov 11, 2009 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Obviously, they’re not looking to dump him like he’s Milton Bradley.

the difference is nobody has said any of this.

unnamed NL executive asked if players x, y and z would be enough and dave said no, players a and b would have to be included. and, suddenly, granderson is on the market according to unnamed NL executive.

from the idiot Sherman that started the rumor
Granderson, who will play at 29 next year, is owed $25.75 million over the next three years and has an option in 2013. He is not a player that Detroit truly wants to trade and neither is the available Edwin Jackson, another player who will draw interest not just from the Yankees, but the Mets, too.

The Royals are committed to Alex Gordon as their third baseman despite acquiring Josh Fields, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Fields instead could play left field in the event David DeJesus is traded. DeJesus’ name popped up in our left field trade market post.

Now there's an idea..

I wonder how much I’d have to pay the Royals or Pirates to be their 25th man.

by Grinder in Training on Nov 11, 2009 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

I think Beyond the Box Score or somethign did a post on what would happen if a normal guy played

in relation to WAR…but let’s say you’re a -5 win player. That’d mean, theoretically, you’d have to pay about $20 million to your team to play.

Actually, that seems like an awesome publicity stunt to get some low-budget teams some money. Pay $20 million, ride the bench for a MLB team for a year.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — I wish I could cuss right now.

by UribeAuction on Nov 11, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

*Ride the bench and play in 30 or so games.

Maybe that’d be enough to hit -5 WAR given how awful your defense would be and that you probably wouldn’t get on base except for when you get hit by a pitch.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — I wish I could cuss right now.

by UribeAuction on Nov 11, 2009 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Why is it assumed I can't catch or throw?

If I was in the outfield I’d be alright. My hitting though I’m certain would be atrocious at the major league level, or the minor league level for that matter. That’s where the 20 million comes in.

by Grinder in Training on Nov 11, 2009 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

Arm strength?

Plus, unless you played OF past high school, your range probably isn’t great.

Just playing devil’s advocate, GiT. Not trying to call you a bad athlete or anything.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — I wish I could cuss right now.

by UribeAuction on Nov 11, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

I would have range better than someone like Rob Mackowiak or Pat Burrell, an arm better than guys like Damon and Pierre

and the ability to read flies near the level of Pablo Ozuna, which is probably more important than both of those things. So pretty bad, all things considered.

by Daniel Berlyn on Nov 11, 2009 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

My thoughts exactly..

I’ve seen some god awful outfielders before, and I feel like I can at least do that, coming off the bench in the 8th and 9th inning in blow out games. I can’t see my hurting the team that much, 20 million should get it done.

If I was an heir to a wealthy family or someother 25 year old with millions to waste.

I’d drop that kind of cash to do it. Although since I would only come off the bench I’d probably have to pay less, since I wouldn’t effect the outcome of many games. Guess it’s time to start playing the lottery.
