Bless you, Cheat.
As for Thome, why not at the right price? Before ya know it, we’ll have eight guys rotating through the DH position, but I would have to think that Big Jim would come at a relatively small cost. And am I a sap for saying that I’d like to see him involved with the organization for years to come?
Your sap-ness or excess thereof is not affected by wanting such a classy guy around...

id rather have a 24 year old (human years) dog that has advanced parkinson’s batting for our team than vlad.
-BoeJouma
sure he is.
he brings the same amount of PR that Thome would bring because of his history, plus his bat is good when he’s been healthy, which he has a good chance of staying with Herm. Also Vlad gives them the flexibility of being able to make some spot starts in RF iif needed.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart
He would also have head to toe swinging, and frankly, I think he will be too much for us at DH
especially after Teahen, but if something changes (Jenks) then we’ll see

In terms of PR, Vlad is almost the polar oposite of Thome.

I'd prefer Nick Johnson, but if the Sox could get Thome for something like $3M that'd be fine
Honestly, if Thome is willing to come super-cheap I think he’s the best fit for the Sox given the payroll. He gives them some lefty pop and OBP and it seems likely he would still be productive next (especially if they could platoon him a little).
If they fill the DH hole with something adequate at a very cheap price, they might be able to find room for a legit corner OF. As much as I dislike Teahen, if KW can fill the OF and DH slots with guys who will OPS over .800 I think the Sox can be a decent team next season.
plus he has some major 2009 postseason experience!

I agree.
But, after the Teahen thing, do they still consider him? At least Vladdy gives power and can play the outfield…..you don’t necessarily need another player. But, yeah, if we can get Johnson reasonably he can DH and play some first. And bat lead-off.
because Kenny wants a ten starter lineup that rotates through all the positions on the field
genius!

Thome would be fine, but so would a lot of guys
Whatever they choose, I hope they wait a little while
His name is Rios and he dances on the sand
It's time for going in a different direction. Pass
Though I guess as others have said, if he’s all we can afford and improve in other areas, I guess I could live with it. Nord is right though, this shouldn’t happen for a long time.
Why Thome would be good:
.882 OPS
.531 slg % at clean-up spot
.02 behind A-Rod in ’09
He murders sliders.
Its not all roses and sunshine however.
His win shares have been dropping every year. He is getting up there in years, more fastballs are getting by him and more curves and change ups have been fooling him, so hes not a perfect solution but he is probably one of the more affordable options that can out perform the contract.

Im stil finding it hard to belive that the Sox are not going to be contenderes in the Chone Figgins sweepstakes,
K.W. says they dont have the $ room, but I get the feeling hes got somehtin up his sleeve. Maybe trading a Konerko for as a salary dump…just a thought. But the Sox have been in love with Figgins for years, you guys know that, and I’m truly of the belief that Kenny is gonna make a strong effort to lasso his guy into the Sox clubhouse.

actually its the right answer
those two are the 3 and 4 hitters on our team for a long time in my opinion.
It may feel strange to not have vets hitting for us in those spots (it sure does for me) but we are going to have to rely on the (slightly) unproven potential for power in the young players now. No more Paulie, Thome, or Dye, time for Transition…

its not time for transition
its time to win the world series when you have one of the top rotations in baseball. Don’t waste it by putting together an offense that won’t score 4 runs a game.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Yeah same offense of Paulie, Thomer, Dye, AJ that could put up more than 4 runs
a game this past season, right? Did we watch the same team? Out with the old, in with the new. Sorry, but it is time to move on.
I'm not saying use the same offense.
but just relying on “unproven potential for power in young players” isn’t going to get it done. you need a few veterans…whether it is the ones from last year or ones from the free agent market doesn’t matter. You need power hitters at US Cellular field…. and you have maybe a 2 year window to get the job done. It seems that ozzie and kenny are going to go half assed again though. too bad. wasting a golden opportunity.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Do you really need a line up of power hitters?
Or is it small ball, or Ozzie ball we need?. All that crap is marketing PR to sell teams and fill seats. You need guys that can get on base, and you need guys that can drive them in when they are on base. Regardless if its HRs or doubles or singles. (yes some stadiums are more conducive to certain attributes – but it is not an end to all)
"ass hole thi is the same line up whit leftys you idiot"

Kenwo4life=ratings
you kind of misunderstood me because I wasnt clear, I agree, we need Figgins at third and move Teahen to rf
Im just saying the power is coming from Q! and Beckham. By unproven, I mean we dont know how healthy Q will be or what Bacons full potential is, though we know its quite a bit.

You mean like the jaggernaut 05 team?
They scored a whole 17 more runs then this past year’s team. A healthy rotation next year in the Central division could possible put up a 660-680 RA. Field me a team that puts up 750 or more runs and I don’t give a damn if the runs come on Hrs, walks or HBP. You can talk about Paulie, Aj and the coming DH all day long. A decent line by Rios and Q the team is likely playoff bound. Those 2 struggle then a whole lot more has to happen.
"Oh well back to work"
And before anyone says it
Of course I want more than 750+ runs. They score 800 and you can print playoff tickets right now. I have at least warmed to the idea that a 28 year old Teahan may actually be telling the truth about the excitement of contending and his offensive stats for next year. He certainly can’t/won’t do any worse than what we got last year in one of the missing spots.
"Oh well back to work"
i sort of agree, mainly in that chone is, in fact, a type b free agent
moving teahen to right makes more sense that playing him at third, but while i somewhat hope we do get chone, i just dont think we will even be in conversations with him/his agent
If the woman is offering an opinion, you are doing it wrong. - HSA
However - from what I've read (from scout reports)
3rd is his better position and he’s the type of player that needs consistancy (wrong team for that with Ozzie). I’ve only seen him play when here, and at that I barely kept notice – so got me.
"ass hole thi is the same line up whit leftys you idiot"
no.
1) I’m not ‘sold’ on anything other Byrd’s average bat and solid defense at both corner OF positions.
2) Byrd was, in fact, slightly unlucky with his BABIP: He posted a 0.315 and had an xBABIP of 0.317.
3) The Cell is more a more favorable HR park than Arlington:
http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/primate_studies/discussion/home_runs_and_ballparks/
Yeah,
if we could get him here for something like 6Mil for 2 years I’d be down for that, I just dont want him coming in here with people thinking he’s going to put up J.D. like #s

Nats drawing interest in Willingham — 2:56 p.m.
The Nationals again are drawing strong trade interest in left fielder Josh Willingham. Whether they are willing to move him is another question.
Willingham, 30, produced a career-high .863 OPS last season, hitting 24 home runs in 427 at-bats. His offense would be difficult for the Nats to replace.
The Braves, looking for a right-handed power hitter, like Willingham but harbor concerns about his defense and past back troubles. Willingham might be a better fit in the American League, where he could be used as a DH.
The Nats control Willingham for two more seasons. He earned $2.95 million last season, and his salary likely will rise to the $4.5 million to $5 million range in his second year of arbitration.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/10357594
poor defensive outfielder with back troubles? boy, that sure sounds like a white sox target.
i wouldn't make the mistake of evaluating quentin's defense on last season.
obviously he was hurt and his range was severely limited. he’s not a good defender but he’s not that bad. willingham and quentin are comparable defensively.
i meant i'd rather see Q DH in an attempt to keep him healthier. i agree they're both equally below average defensively.
Was he injured playing defense?
Punching a bat and having plantar fasciitis is not a result of too much time in the OF. I might agree with those that say he needs to be engaged the whole game rather than stewing in the dugout 95% of the game.
