ESPN - OTL: Field of Schemes?
This gets the seal of approval from BBTF. I haven't yet read the piece -- it's a whopping 12,000 words -- but I love long-form journalism. I'll check it out this weekend, and drop another baseball-related long-form link in the comments

Field of Schemes is weird/awesome
Its two parts feel good sports story, one part fake hero, one part Apocalypse Now. It is more disjointed then expected as the thread of the story jumps around. And the journalist engages in some forced metaphor creation which is jarring against the rest of the good prose.
It takes about 30-45 minutes to get through, so give yourself time, but it is fantastic.
Printed for train home. Thx for the link.
"his ballerness could not be stoped which rose his era to 5.42 "
Hate to sound jaded, but it sounds like a typical 3rd world story,
except it’s about baseball. The writer’s style is quite uncomfortable to read, since he seems very impressed with his style and is way too cynical to be surprised by this. Sad story.
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
C'mon, the writer did buy the poor kids two bags of candy.
