Playing third base last season, Beckham was named AL Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News and by the MLB Players Association. But he finished fifth in the balloting of the Baseball Writers Association of America as A’s reliever Andrew Bailey won the award.
“Everybody has their opinion,” Beckham said. "I guess everybody was kind of sold on Bailey. He was pretty dominating.
“I didn’t think that I was going to be fifth. But I got two awards that were voted by my peers. That’s pretty special. I will give (the award money) to charity.”

“We’re going to have to talk about that,” Beckham said Wednesday from his home in Atlanta. “From what I have heard from (former Sox second baseman Chris Getz), it is kind of difficult to communicate with Alexei. I will make sure we know the signals we can give each other, or different words we know in each other’s language so we can figure out who is covering the bag.”

Gooch: “AAHHHHH TUNA MAKI!!! Tank you” English version: I’ll take the throw Fatty and thank you"
Uribe: “BURRRITTTTTO CHIMMICHANGA!!!” English version: “Get out of the way Squinty, I got it”

One would think that two natural and professional baseball players would be able to figure out who should be doing what on the field, with very little need for language at all.

hey sticky,
what do you mean “natural”? Needless to say, there is actually a fair amount of communication that goes on between 2nd and SS during the game. Yeah, they’ll probably figure out ways to communicate – but actually being able to SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE helps immensely.

wu you’re right. I don’t remember or care to look up what larry wrote, but anybody that thinks Jordan Danks is ready to play in the majors is frickin out of their mind. Guys that fail AA should not be candidates to play in the majors the next year.
The real question is will he start back at AA or AAA? You could construct an argument for either (injuries, AFL, etc., etc.). Now if he plays out of his mind in ST and follows that up with half a year of AAA domination then yeah bring him up.

it was stupid. say what you want about field and betemit. but they sure as shit could – and did long ago (and at a younger age than viciedo in betemit’s case) – put up better numbers than viciedo did in AA. there’s a reason you don’t evaluate players based upon seeing them in batting practice.

Owners crying poor - do you buy it?
Some teams lost money in 2009, baseball commissioner Bud Selig said Thursday after the final owners meeting of the year.
Warning shot Rosenthal: Scott Boras says MLB teams have plenty of money. The league disputes his views. This could be a very bad omen.
“There was no question about that,” Selig said. “I don’t think the concerns have been ameliorated at all. I think the concerns are still there because all these people have their own economists.”
Selig said final figures for this year are still being calculated and everyone is living in the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression. He declined to identify the teams.

Take your medication. I'm FUCKING KIDDING, WU.
And besides. I’ll take stay-at-home mom, over 40+hr workweek AND come home to be a mom ANY DAY.
I realize it’s not an “easy” job to raise a kid, I’m not fucking stupid and I even hope to have this horrible task in front of me someday too, but seriously… I don’t feel very bad for millionaire women who get to be at home with their children all day. That’s a dream for many women in this world, who have to instead work a job or two to support their kids before they come home to the difficult chore of being a mom.
Besides, you think Mrs Buehrle can’t leave her house without having her photo taken or something? puh-lease. I’m MB’s biggest fan and I can hardly pick her out of a crowd if I tried.

Wait...no sympathy/empathy for WHAT? I am so confused.
You brought up the example of having your personal life in the spotlight/scrutiny…when ALL I said, jokingly, was I’ll marry a millionaire and see how hard it is to be a stay-at-home mom with money coming out of my asshole.
I mentioned nothing of celebrity in that. “Be careful what you wish for?” Was I wishing for a celebrity’s life anywhere in my comment?
So….with what is it that I’m not sympathizing?
A woman who doesn’t go to work 40 or 50 or 80 hours a week just to feed her kids? A woman who will never have to worry about paying for food, gas, travel, healthcare, or her children’s education? A woman who can freely spend her husband’s millions and doesn’t worry day in and day out how she’s going to make the bills this month and the hundreds of dollars of overdraft fees she’s accruing by the day?
A child who will NEVER have to witness her mom sitting in her car crying because she doesn’t have the $5 to give her kid to see a movie? Oh, cuz that was my life, WU.
I promise you that her situation is a lot easier than most other people’s situations. Hell, she probably even has a nanny on hand!
The only thing that would suck about her situation, is the lack of MB being around for a portion of the year. But then again…she DID marry a ballplayer, knowing that’s how it goes as an athlete’s wife…
So no, sorry… overall, no sympathy there.

Moeny solves everything.
I get it. You’d like to be there having any “problems” associated with that scenario because there are no “problems” withhow you view it. Granted, in Maslow’s hierarchy, money brings you up a few levels. It doesn’t solve everything, nor does it buy fulfillment.
And, at least in Mrs. B’s life, money and celebrity go hand-in-hand. It’s a different set of expectations and challenges than any of the other situations regarding motherhood, I’ll grant you, and maybe not one you’ve experienced.
All I was intimating was “judge not…”. That’s it. No sympathy.
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
Well Buehrle and his wife are no Brangelina
Sure Buehrle would draw attention to himself if he showed up at a Chicago club, and probably in the more populated corners of Missouri as well, but calling him and his wife celebrities is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. It’s not like paparazzi are waiting outside the gates of chateau de burlzz to snap a shot of the happy family for this week’s US Weekly.
I get it that in the literal definition of the word, they are, but I think the word celebrity has taken a new meaning with the glut of people in the world with a modicum of fame and a sizable bank account. I just don’t think the Buehrles are turning too many heads when they go out to dinner… unless they roll up in Mark’s truck, that eyesore does nothing but attract attention!

Did you see American Chopper last night? I bet the Buehrle's home is being staked out by the Hell's Angels today.
Really, I was just referring to Internet speculation re: Buehrls. I had done a search to see how long he and the wife had known each other and came upon a couple of sites that included speculation that MB is a philanderer and always has been. Stuff like that.
That’s gotta suck a bit. That shaped my empathy a little.
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
Of course that element sucks, but that is present in households everywhere, celebrities or not. And what professional athlete ISN'T speculated to be out fucking other chicks on the road?
It’s shitty to be sure, but isn’t that something you kinda anticipate prior to marrying a professional athlete or celebrity or musician, etc?

I don't believe that at all. In fact, I know of many situations in which people claim having money has ruined their lives.
I don’t know how you concluded that I didn’t see any problems with having money; based only on my comments that it certainly takes away a shit-ton of basic everyday problems that MOST of us have to encounter.
That’s my problem here…I didn’t say much at all. It was a joke that you misconstrued to then imply that I am narrow-minded about the topic. I wasn’t judging her at all. I was replying to you saying what a fine woman Mrs B was because of this great gift she got Mark. Well, honestly, if I was married into money, you’d all get some pretty nice gifts and I wouldn’t be a better person for being able to spend my husband’s money.
I don’t envy a single celebrity actor or singer, etc. I don’t envy that high-profile public lifestyle at all; especially not for the simple fact that those people have money.
I firmly believe that money does not buy happiness; but I also firmly believe that having no money nearly guarantees misery in this country. It hangs over your head every waking moment, and keeps you awake when you should be sleeping.
And like Hazy just said and what I said earlier – Mrs B is NOT a celebrity. She is married to an athlete, and might have to deal with a degree of spotlight for that reason… but certainly not on a scale where I feel sorry for her overall lifestyle.

But she was just on American Chopper.
I hope you truly marry someone with cash, since you are now on record as saying we’d all benefit. Please don’t limit yourself to marrying a guy. Why eliminate 50% of the population?
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
And that was her choice to be, no? Did the cameraman bang down her door and film her without a contract being signed? She could've gifted him that chopper without bringing it into the homes of America.
That’s the other thing – most celebrities in the spotlight, scrutinized for every move, are the ones who choose to be.
There are plenty of celebrities who choose to keep their lives private, and do so successfully.
I would love to fall in love with a rich guy and be set for life…and I’d happily hand out gifts (such as retirement for both my parents) that I could never give in my current situation.
But I’m not going to marry for money…because I’m not stupid enough to think that that would make me happy.
If I could find a rich trustworthy guy whom I loved….SCORE!

I actually don't like the design of the bike....
but i don’t watch American Chopper ever and know very little if anything about motorcycles. Are they always like that (the body design that is?). From the pictures/video I saw, the bike looks hard to ride. Can someone’s arms reach the handle bars? It looks like you have to lean forward to reach, almost like a crotch rocket? Again, i give the disclaimer that I don’t know much about motorcycles…
