Pitcher – Mark Buehrle, Chicago
In The Fielding Bible—Volume II, we put some extra time into analyzing pitcher defense. It’s not only pitchers’ ability to field their position that counts defensively. It’s their ability to hold runners that matters in an important way as well. In Buehrle’s case, he has it all. His plus/minus figure of +9 was tops among pitchers in 2009, but his ability to hold runners is legendary. In the last four years he’s allowed a total of 15 stolen bases. His catchers have managed to catch five potential thieves in that time period. But even more importantly, when Mark throws over to first, the results are devastating for baserunners. Sixteen times in those same four years, he’s thrown over to first and the runner broke for second and was thrown out. That’s a Pitcher Caught Stealing (PCS) in our scorebook. Not only that, 14 more times Buehrle nabbed a baserunner at the base as he tried to get back. That’s a Pitcher Pickoff (PPO), for those of you scoring at home. In total, 15 stolen bases against him (an average of just under four per year) and 35 guys thrown out (an average of almost nine per year). Not too shabby.

Wonder if he will ever share this accolade (best fielder of his position)

with any teammate on the Sox before he leaves the team. (Yeah, right.)

Saving everyone else the trouble:

From the chess-related movie Searching for Bobby Fischer. The correct spelling is actually “patzer,” and it’s a derogatory name for a weak player. The term was revived in the Kevin Smith film, Chasing Amy

I didn't see "worst".

Interesting that Bill James left Buehrls completely off the list – not even in the top 10. F-stick.

Is it not true that he equates

some of his defensive metrics based on gold glove award data? Thought I heard that somewhere…

so over the last 24 hours or so a few things happened that havent happened since march.

i didnt even come to this site. it weird that i actually feel somewhat guilty about it, but i kinda do.

i finally was able to latch on and sink a job. the best part of being unemployed was easily being able to watch almost every single game. i would guess i watched somewhere between 125 and 140 games this year. by far the most ive ever seen in a season in my entire life. if id had a job, i wouldnt have seen The Perfecto. i have nowhere to go with whatever the fuck im saying so ill end transmission now.

ahhh Beautiful Camel Back Ranch in sunny Glendale AZ...a couple friends and I are going to meth up in Scottsdale to play some golf and raid the fridge in some 16000 sqft house and I was curious as to which SSSers have ever been out there. Unfortunately our trip falls short of the first game as we leave the evening of the 4th but does anyone know if we can tour the facilities and watch some practice drills or anything of the sort.

Any tips, tricks, or ideas are welcomed. Will my SSS press Badge work?
