Interview with Mark Gonzales
Good read overall. Some damning discussion about player evaluation:
"The Nick Swisher evaluation was blown. The Sox thought they were getting a certain type player and that wasn’t the case at all."
"Whoever made the evaluation on Wilson Betemit should be held accountable for it. He was acquired expressly to back up Ramirez at short and it was clear from the first preseason game against the Dodgers he couldn’t do the job. That, I’m convinced, changed the complexion of the club, it forced Ozzie to make some personnel changes that he wasn’t expecting to have to do."

BA thought MG was cockblocking him, perhaps?
"You have to be accountable. I’m always the first or one of the first guys in the clubhouse every day. That will never change. If someone has an issue with something I’ve done, I’m right there, we can talk about it. It’s interesting but the only player who ever complained about me being around a lot was Brian Anderson, you can make of that what you will. I respect their job and what they are trying to do and it’s a healthy situation."

Ehh -- I respect Gonzalez much more than, say, Joe Cowley, but he doesn't add a whole lot over the typical mainstream baseball writer
They spend too much time talking about the lack of leadership and other stuff. I tend to see that as being rather obnoxious. Isn’t Occam’s Razor appropriate here — that the Sox just weren’t very talented? Why do folks always need to point to some moral failing ("not enough team chemistry, not enough heart, not wanting it enough) as a reason for a team’s lack of success? I’m taking it to the extreme here, but compare the 2009 White Sox roster with that of the Phillies or Yankees. The gap between the latter two and the White Sox is absurdly high.
As colin mentions, the Swisher discussion begs the question (or rather, many questions) — why does the blame lie on Swisher’s shoulders? I say this in two respects — why was Swisher unsuccessful here after seeing success in Oakland and now New York? Similarly, I don’t know why Gonzalez limits the “accountability” to the person/people who wanted Betemit. That was a horrible, horrible trade from the day it was made (on so many levels). For a team that (from time to time) isn’t averse to mentioning their financial position (relative to the big spenders), giving up a cost-controlled Nick Swisher for jack shit strikes me as an organization-wide failure (but everyone here knows this, so it’s just piling on for me to keep ranting).
Gonzalez also says:
The more I think about this 2009 team, the more I think the veterans should be ashamed of their performance – especially down the stretch. How many times do you see veterans – not kids – fold down the stretch. It’s pretty revealing about their character (or lack of).
Which “veterans” — besides the obvious one, Dye — should be “ashamed of their performance”? If anything, the veterans did about as well as could be expected. Pierzynski had a particularly good year, neither Thome nor Konerko fell off a cliff and Podsednik gave the Sox a completely unexpected (in a good way) performance. Linebrink? He made sure to spread his suck over the whole season, so I doubt he’s talking about him.
And no, Mark, I don’t know what about Jermaine Dye’s character is revealed by his performance down the stretch. Please tell me. If that statement is, in fact, aimed at someone like Dye, that comes off as a real douchey comment.

The guy's talking while driving
I think your standards for precision are a little high for this kind of interview.
Beat writers have the same problem sabermetric guys do — they tend to overemphasize the stuff they know. They’re around the clubhouse, they see a lot of body language, know how guys spend their time before and after games, and are privy to a lot of whispers. They play up the character part because that’s what they see and hear, and others don’t. They often express that knowledge at the sake of other information.
It happens the other way around — for example, somebody thinking Jose Lopez and John Danks are roughly equivalent, or that 2009 Dewayne Wise >>> 2009 Scott Podsednik because that’s what the WAR says. Obnoxiousness ain’t exclusive to MSM.
Overall, I thought this was pretty good, and I like the job that Gonzalez does, especially in relation to Cowley. It’s nice to have the variety, with one guy playing it straight, the other guy taking editorial liberties. Read each of them long enough, and you can read between the lines.

Dave Cameron's ridiculous trade speculating aside, he would not make errors in retrospection like Gonzales.
“Beat writers have the same problem sabermetric guys do — they tend to overemphasize the stuff they know. They’re around the clubhouse, they see a lot of body language, know how guys spend their time before and after games, and are privy to a lot of whispers. They play up the character part because that’s what they see and hear, and others don’t. They often express that knowledge at the sake of other information.”
Either JD had a slump, like all major leaguers have, or he stopped trying and lacks moral fortitude. And isn’t Gonzales, as a beat reporter, well positioned to confirm that one way or the other? The SOP for Cowley and Gonzales is to hint that they’re in on some really lurid morally depraving stuff (I assume JD was hiding dead hookers rather than taking extra BP) but can’t let us know…for whatever reason. Presumably to save their access, but that’s a nice little facade that let’s them lob whatever innuendo toward Sox players and coaches they feel like. Which oh so rarely focus on critical discussion of actual performance. Hence Cowley’s Wife jokes.
Whereas Dave Cameron would undoubtedly bring up 2007, JD’s declining athleticism, health and value regardless of the slump and the general fact that slumps happen regularly to all players. It’s either moral failing or it’s normal variation in performance around some unknown mean. If it happens to everybody, it can’t be that JD is especially lacking in character. If there’s anything the investigation into the steroid scandal revealed, it’s that MLB is an extremely competitive environment, where those who don’t work hard enough to stay in peak condition can get left jobless.
So as far as I can tell, one of those explanations impugns one of my favorite players and is probably encouraged by the editorship because they think it sells papers. The other is proffered by guys like Tom Tango who’ve written books and conducted studies about slumps.

Cameron's ridiculous trade speculation is a perfect example
He had plenty of time to review it and modify it, whether on FanGraphs or BTF, and he never wavered because he never does. He gets it right the first time because Dave Cameron Knows Better Than We Do, And If We Don’t Get It, Then We’re Not Smart Enough. I don’t buy that one group’s brand of arrogance is better if they’re both in the wrong.
But let’s say that Gonzalez wouldn’t revise any of these statements upon a second viewing. I’m not understanding why you they shouldn’t place undue emphasis on character, considering Ozzie and Kenny do it often. It’s not like Gonzalez and Cowley pulled off the Swisher trade while Kenny wasn’t looking, and it’s not like they started the bandwagon. They were well behind in documenting the discord.
Dye was part of the veteran core that didn’t like the cut of Swisher’s jib. Dye didn’t get along with Orlando Cabrera. There have been numerous young players who have said they don’t fit in well with the clubhouse. I have no idea how much these things matter, but Lord knows they matter in the Sox decision-making, and if Dye has played a part in expunging bad fits, maybe he deserves to have a sanctimonious mirror held up to him.

The truth is we are in no position to verfiy that Dye sucked because of poor morals
The beat writers get to see how players prepare and how hard the work outside of the game. We don’t have that access.
That being said I find it weird that Dye’s morals failed him in the 2nd half of this season when they’d been pretty solid for several years.
I have to agree with Colin that I find the innuendo inherent in the beat writing obnoxious. There were “veterans” who lacked “character” and that’s why the club lost. That’s horrible reporting. I’d prefer actual names if that subject is going to be broached (“Dye and Thome spent the time before games playing Pokemon!”) But even if names need to be keep out of it to preserve access, how about saying what specific behavior troubled Gonzales’ sensibilities? Poor “character” can be anything from hookers and smack to too much time watching “Dancing with the Stars”. But there’s a big difference.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 3, 2009 8:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Gonzalez didn't question Dye's or anyone's morals.
He questioned their character in regards to veteran leadership on this team. He really didn’t say anything we as fans haven’t said; he just confirmed it as an “insider.”
As for Dye, if I recall his initial reaction in August when the sox claimed Rios, was he was surprised and confused. He apparently was confused as to why KW would try to better a ballclub that was in a division battle. He went on to perform like a sad sack of shit for the rest of the season. I also recall the glare he gave Rios in his first game when Rios had the gall to call for a fly ball in right center. His previous extended slump was in 2007 when he sulked to the media that he wasn’t appreciated as much as Buehrle after MB received his extension. These were issues that were being reported as they happened. Why are fans upset that Gonzalez would give his take on clubhouse leadership?

Fine, but Gonzales/Cowley aren't exactly adding to the discussion
like I said, all we get is innuendo. We don’t know how much these things matter nor do we know how much they matter to the Sox clubhouse. There’s no timeline of actual events, just hearsay. Cameron, whatever his faults,* aligned himself with fangraphs while beat writers almost without exception remain among the Joe Morgan school and simply do an awful job in picking out which players are good and which aren’t. I concede they’re both prone to arrogant moments and mistakes. They write for a living last I checked. But the beat faction has been seduced by the intangible and the immeasurable.
*which I think you’ve overstated…USSM is and has been an excellent blog and the WAR series he did at Fangraphs remains as useful to baseball fans trying to understand the game as anything a beat writer is going to do. DC cites and teaches…MG can’t even confirm the rumors he’s supposedly privy to.

I'll chime in here
What separates Cameron into the “arrogant and an asshole” category is the over bearing need to be “right” trumping intellectual honestly.
His Sox/Mariners trade was based on some player value metrics (in both worth in wins and marginal wins) that’s worth is open to debate by smart people. When these smart people (non Sabermetricians though) called him on it he refused to admit that it wasn’t a clear cut situation and that there was complexity in his evaluations that nobody in the room (room being the online saber community) could iron out to the degree he claimed.
Every writer is arrogant, the best ones are really, really arrogant. But in the analytical arenas of humanist sciences (economics, political theory, sabermetrics) the assumptions made are often open to debate. It’s not 1+1 = 2.
Cameron is a smart guy, but he acts like he has a monopoly on it. He should realize that it’s a sign of his enormity in the field that so many people will go to great ends in hopes of discrediting him. If he gets called on something he should admit it.
I followed the thread on BTF pretty closely, he never backtracked at all, which I thought was beyond the usual arrogance smart writers have, but hey — that’s who Dave is. We’ve all got a lot of evidence that he isn’t going to change.

He could've been talking about pitching.
Count was traded, Colon went MIA, Liney/Jenks might also be called out as “folding”. Who knows? He can’t name names yet until they are all gone, and then would probably screw up his cred with current/future players.
Perhaps he should’ve said that the veterans were disappointingly bad and exhibited no flexibility in clubhouse leadership skills (stayed quiet and businesslike rather than throwing chairs and smashing light bulbs) when certainly someone needed to give a spark beyond Savior (who, ever Christlike, exhibited weariness in Sept.).
I love to see print v. e-Media advocates go at it as if one is “better” than the other. Both reflect their audiences. Yet it’s content, however you slice it, and it lasts forever. Folks should be careful and diligent before putting their thoughts where others can rip on them forever. Jim/SM seems to grasp that.

I should clarify...
I see the value in what the Gonzalez’ of the world do. This place would certainly be slightly duller if we couldn’t go over and dissect quotes that were extracted from Gonzalez or Merkin or Cowley. “Print vs. e-Media” (as you call it) can definitely work side-by-side (in some capacity or another).
My problem is with the appeal to these vague notions of a lack of “character” on certain players’ parts. I tend to think it’s rather disingenuous to throw out stuff like that without having anything concrete behind it. If it was such a big factor in the 2009 team’s lack of success as Gonzalez seems to think it was, doesn’t he owe it to Sox fans to elaborate more on what exactly is meant by a lack of “character”? And hey — maybe larry’s right and it’s the interviewer’s fault that those questions weren’t pursued more. I don’t know, though — I think that if pressed, we’d just get more of the same ‘generalities’ (“nobody yelled or punched things when this team started losing”).

if anything, swish's 2010 season proves that sox initial evaluation of him was right
i was really hoping that mg would get on kong, aj, dye for giving kdub the green light to get rid of him.
about the vets remark, i’m confused too, aj was good, as was kong (with good D on top of that), thome was as good or better than expected, and dye fell off the cliff, but that’s because of health issues more likely. if i had anybody to go after, it would alexie in the beginning of the season, but he turned it around

hensley meulens named giants hitting coach
blah blah….“None of that will matter much if Meulens, 42, can’t curb the Giants’ free-swinging tendencies that helped cost Carney Lansford his job as hitting coach. San Francisco’s 392 walks, fewest in the Majors, contributed to its .309 on-base percentage, also last in both leagues. The highest-ranking Giant among National Leaguers in pitches seen per plate appearance was Aaron Rowand, whose 3.47 average was good for 69th.”

live in London and go out of my way not to be rude. I cannot believe how so many people on the tube will not give their seats to elderly/infirm people, then again that’s more selfishness than rudeness I suppose.
I was bought up (in a working class family) to mind my Ps and Qs and I’ve never forgotten it! Yes, I believe a lot of my fellow countrymen are rude and selfish (especially in London) but I have been pushed past whilst attempting to disembark from the tube, by many a tourist too!!
If everybody slowed down a bit and smiled and helped one another a bit more there’d be a lot less stressed people around too – of which rudeness is a by-product. I’ll never let other peoples bad attitudes rub off on me!

that's so right
London is a different animal to where I live in the North, if an elderly, disabled or otherwise struggling person got on the bus here someone will always offer a seat. I once saw an old woman get on the 757 and the seats at the front of the bus (which have a sign saying please give up for OAPS etc) were full of a group of young thugs who wouldn’t move when she asked them – instantly five or six men ( I was one of them ) hauled them out of their seats, got the driver to stop and launched them onto the pavement. They will never do that again.
but yes – London is different – I’d most likely get knifed trying that

No room this year for the small guys
Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio thought about the teams in baseball’s final four this year – large-market clubs all – and wondered whether there would room for his franchise any time soon.
“We don’t know if that’s a trend or just an aberration,” he said. “The disparity among the clubs appears to be widening.”
Baseball’s four league championship series teams were all among the top nine in opening-day payroll this year, led by the top-spending New York Yankees at US$201 million. They were joined by the No. 6 Los Angeles Angels ($114 million), No. 7 Philadelphia ($113 million) and the No. 9 Los Angeles Dodgers ($100 million).
“It’s certainly trending in the direction,” Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane said. “The big markets are always going to be there. Whether or not they’re the only ones there I guess remains to be seen.”

That's a fuckin' shame.
Don’t even try to have the larrys of the world tell you there is no competitive advantage to consistently having a higher than average payroll. It’s like saying UCLA would have won all those national championships in the Wooden era without the incredible advantage of doling out way more scholarships than other universities. Now, that’s been taken care of…..don’t see anymore dynasties, do you?
by dantesox on Nov 3, 2009 5:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Sport is an outlet for people's competitive nature.
Doesn’t it make sense that we take control of a variable that CAN be controlled in an effort at competive balance, within reason. You’ll still have your good and bad organizations, but at least we’d be one step closer to franchises succeeding or failing based on factors they have more control of.
by dantesox on Nov 3, 2009 5:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It's certainly an advantage
it’s still far, far down the list as far as reasons why a team like, say, Pittsburgh hasn’t been competitive in more than two decades. Like most everything else, incompetence in ownership/management is a much larger factor in winning than payroll is.
I also disagree with your premise that MLB should care about “competitive advantage”, at least to the extent that you seem to. MLB is a business. Why should it want, say, the Rays winning as many games as, say, the Yankees, on a year-in, year-out basis?
by CWSKeith on Nov 3, 2009 6:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

by CWSKeith on Nov 3, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Nothing. And I agree with you more than disagree.
But when you see such massive gaps in payroll, don’t you feel compelled to do something? Sports has to strike a balance between business and SPORT and what that stands for, and MLB does a piss poor job of it.

Had to look it up:
An onomatopoeical adjective based on the sound emitted when something is “oh so tasty” (either through hunger or flavorological value) that one gnaws through it without regard to cleanliness or etiquette. This sort of ravenous eating will often result in an “om nom nom nom” noise being emitted from the eater.
Arthur: Gosh, I haven’t eaten for days.
Dirk: Me neither. We’re both starving equally.
Arthur: Look! A whole cooked chicken with side of mashed potatoes and a warm/soft dinner roll!
Dirk: We have to decide which of us gets to eat first. To be fair, we should rock-paper-scissors for it.
Arthur: Om nom nom nom nom!
Dirk: Arthur, you’re a jerk. A real knee-biter.

Then you have to be effing Superman.
So since the depressed have higher suicide rates does that mean the living depressed people are not trying hard enough to see reality?

yeah, the font is pretty dumb but i dont really look at them for very long
i just dont like excessive white space. im not asking for geosites-like (RIP) coloration, but some different color tones would be nice, a la pre-update

It's ugly to look at when the browser is maximized.
I liked the darker color scheme, and the site bannr looks very odd (though that’s probably Ad-Block’s fault). Also, aligning titles with the body just looks weird.
