Refresh my memory; all of the times the Sox have "almost" acquired Vizquel, Hudson, Furcal, et al have clouded my memory.

In the days before the '05 free agency period the Sox were considered the destination for Vizquel

In the hours before midnight Bruce Levine was reporting that Vizquel and the Sox had a deal worked out and that he would be among the first signings of the FA period…

Turns out he was, signing that night with the Giants.

The Sox settled for Uribe, and Iguchi, and Pierzynski… and the rest is history

Hell, we can have ooooo REEEEEEE bay!!!!!!!!! back if we want.

And the more I consider it, I’d rather have him at 3B than Teahen. There was something comforting about those 20 times a year he’d hit a homer to cut the defect to 8 runs.

that arm is upside defined. i’ve been impressed with his pitch f/x – i hope he pitches tomorrow because i want to get a look at him live. if i were running a totally horseshit team – nats, padres, pirates – i would definitely take him. if he totally shits the bed, it was an essentially costless move.

"The Matador"!!!

Omar Vizquel is done catching massive snakes. Next up, he wants to become a matador.

The Texas Rangers infielder, who last winter searched for anacondas, plans to try bullfighting when he goes home to Venezuela this winter.

“Just go and learn the basics and stuff,” Vizquel said. “It’s one of my things on the to-do list. There’s a lot of things still to do.”

There are few players who can match Vizquel’s offseason pursuits. Among the other adventures he hopes for: parachuting, flying in an F-16 jet and attending all three Triple Crown horse races.
Snip:
grand tour to see the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes might have to wait because the 42-year-old Vizquel, already the oldest position player in the major leagues, intends to come back next year for a 22nd season.

“When I retire and have some free time, I want to do the three races,” he said.

Vizquel said Sunday that he is planning to play another season because he feels pretty good and “better take advantage of it” while he feels that way.

“It’s highly unusual. But you look at him, he stays in great shape, he still moves well,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said.

“I don’t see why not, the guy’s probably in as good or better shape than anybody in this clubhouse,” Texas pitcher Kevin Millwood said. “He can still play the game. I don’t see why he shouldn’t.”

Vizquel has started 43 games for Texas — 21 at shortstop, 14 at second and eight at third — and has 202 fielding chances without an error, the most among any player at those positions in the major leagues. In 60 games overall, he is hitting .266. He knew when he came to Texas for $1 million last spring that he would be a part-time player and mentor to rookie shortstop Elvis Andrus, a kid half his age from Venezuela.

Let's go steal his Chihuly sculpture!
Vizquel is an avid painter and sculptor, and plays the guitar, drums and sings. He is a fan of salsa music and loves to dance. He has a son Nicholas Enrique (born September 12, 1995) with his wife Nicole. Along with his artistic pursuits, Omar also is a collector of fine art and owns several modern art pieces. Included in his collection is a glass chandelier for his home made by Seattle artist Dale Chihuly worth over $100,000.

The word butcher is part of the problem. I don’t want him to play there, but his one decent year seems to be when he played there and no where else in the same season. I also didnt realize Omar was still so damn good defensively.

I agree with you and Mick below

and I didn’t mean to imply that he was a butcher in my above reply to you, I was just being a ‘pedant’ like you said. The one year he stuck at the same position, he didn’t suck at it, so that is where my ‘cautious optimism’ comes from. And like Mick says, hitting lower in the order with better hitters around him should definitely improve on the pitches he sees.

In KC he batted in the middle of the order most of the time.

As bad as he’s been, there were a lot of times teams could pitch around him as a lefty to get to some of that other shit in their lineups. He just might hit better in the 2 hole or bottom of the order in our lineup.

Guillen did confirm on Friday that both he and the club have spoken to Vizquel about him joining the team, but the manager didn’t know how far those talks have progressed.
“I hear they are talking,‘’ Guillen said in a phone interview. "I’ve talked to Vizquel in the past, but they aren’t telling me anything. I just got back from Venezuela, and I guess Kenny and Rick didn’t want me running my mouth down there.
“I’ll tell you what, though, if this kid is on the team there’s no way in hell he’s wearing No. 13.‘’
Guillen has worn 13 his whole career, so sorry Omar.
On the same day that the Sox took a step in adding a veteran presence like Vizquel, however, talks with free agent Scott Podsednik have taken two steps back. According to a source, enough so that Williams is looking elsewhere for a leadoff hitter right now.
“Do we need Pods, yes,’’ Guillen said of the situation. "Do we want him? Yes. But we have to make the best deal for this organization. That’s not my problem right now. That’s on Kenny, Rick and [board chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf] to decide.’’

According to pitching coach Don Cooper, for the first time in his tenure, the club will have a pitching summit in January for a group of major and minor-league pitchers in the organization to come together in Chicago, making sure they are practicing what the club is preaching from their hurlers.

There is an interesting side topic in there.

On the day that the Sox took a step forward in adding Vizquel, talks with free-agent outfielder Scott Podsednik took two steps back. According to a source, Williams is looking elsewhere for a leadoff hitter.

I wonder what this could mean for the Sox. I hope it is a trade for Carl Crawford, but I think I read somewhere that he doesn’t like batting leadoff.

How can Thome be expected to hit in 2010? Over the last four seasons, Thome’s wOBAs have been .420, .410, .370, and .367. Regressing to the mean and accounting for age, I estimate his 2010 wOBA at about .365, or about 21 runs above average.

Other (better) projection systems are already coming out with their estimate. I haven’t seen a ZiPs‘ projection for Thome (sorry if I missed it, Dan), but the CHONE projection is much less optimistic about Thome’s 2010 abilities than mine, having him at +9 runs per 150 games, or about +10 per 700 PAs.

Not picky, but very sticky....
