OPS hearts Dick Allen
Thirteen of the 17 players who led a league in O.P.S. from 1946 through 1970 eventually made the Hall of Fame. (The exceptions were Dick Allen, Bob Allison, Norm Cash and Al Rosen.)
Since my last FanShot on the same subject was so popular I thought I'd Andy Kaufman it and keep repeating until I have thoroughly pissed off my audence. And screw Bob Allison, Norm Cash, and Al Rosen. Oh, and FRN and FKL.

spot on
you mighta coulda meant the pot leaf t shirt guy. I found that kid to be one of the most sympathetic characters in the movie though, just awkward and not reaching the Matty Mc levels of douchery. The worst part about that character was his deeply unfortunate hair. Lincecum as well.

Allen was easily the best of the 4 and like Jim Rice, was not a friend of the baseball writers.
I think he belongs in the hall of fame.

if you think allen deserves it, they better put in a whole bunch of guys who were better first.
i suppose it depends upon how “big” one thinks the hall should be.

depends too on how you value peak vs career stats

Longevity hurt Allen.
Had he been able to play a few more years to pad his hall numbers, he would have been a lock. Of the corner infielders I saw play that are in the hall, I would put Allen at least equal if not ahead of Stargell, Cepeda, Perez and Brooks Robinson. Robinson was unique, making it primarily because of defense, so he’s probably not comparable. You’re right about peak years performance. He was dominant at his position in his era. I hate like hell to say it but that’s why I think Santo probably deserves it too. Although, Allen is far more deserving than Santo, imo.

This.
Although it was a “dearth” of longevity. I agree with every word other than that.

I tentatively put myself in the Allen in the hall camp
(nearly said Dick in the hall, thought otherwise of the phrasing). When I first discovered him I thought he was a no doubter, then as I read more about him I’m less certain. There was a pretty damning article written by Bill James about him that made me think twice. But for now, until I delve in farther, I think he deserves to be in the hall considering some of the people in

Interesting that Bill James, who has made his living using statistics to measure baseball players achievement and worth
would choose to ignore those stats when it came to Allen. He did nothing but rip his personality and “attitude” in that article which was both completely out of charachter and vindictive of him. In that article, James said Allen clearly had a case for the hall based on his numbers. Fuck Bill James.

That's what gave me pause for concern
the fact that James, of all people, filled a full article with negativity. I wasn’t alive when Allen played so I can only go off of secondhand accounts and that was pretty damning.

guys like whitaker, grich, santo, trammell, raines, blyleven immediately come to mind as better players.
of course, i think they put too many guys in already.

That's a very unimpressive list.
The only one you named that played the same positions as Allen was Santo and he was not in the same class as Allen.

exactly why allen shouldn’t be in.

why, because you named a few that aren't in and aren't near as good as Allen was?

i just read the first two pages, but it seems like there was a lot that was overblown plus some racial overtones to the whole thing.

kaufman is much better to watch in clips in retrospect
than to actually sit through his schtick live. You know there was that commercial where its like “jordan changed sports” and “Pryor changed comedy” kaufman really actually changed comedy.

He is rolling over in his grave if he's reading that.
The whole “schtick” was to wear down his audience and test boundaries. You don’t get it in clips.

I said he actually changed comedy, and he did it by testing a barrier
i guess schtick is a derogatory term, but i didn’t mean it as such. I’d rather laugh at this guys balls to perform it in front of an audience that hates it so that i might laugh. his comedy was excellent on a conceptual level, i just wouldn’t want to be at a zmuda show. Do you get what I mean? I’d rather watch him test other peoples boundaries than have my own tested?

Allen - most talented, yes, HOF not sure...
Dick Allen was #1 in OPS for 4 out of 8 years, 2 in the NL and 2 in the AL, and in 72 Sox fans like myself (ones who went to lots of games) saw time and again that many nights it was like he was playing on one level and everyone else, including Charley O’s A’s (Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi, and company) were playing something much less.
Imagine Frank Thomas of the mid 90’s only with gold glove abilities and a great baserunner (19 stolen and 37 hrs in 1972).
Did he play on a series of meh (Phillies, etc.) or good teams having a bad year (St. Louis)? Sure, and he didn’t always handle it well. In the end he was great for 8 to 10 (and four of those he had only 450 ABs or less) years which, from my way of thinking isn’t the kind of longevity that gets you in.
Best natural all tools player I’ve ever seen.
by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Nov 22, 2009 9:26 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
well put, I agree with your summary.
If he had played another couple of years, he would have had the numbers for sure. On a pure talent level, he was one of the best who ever played.
