Open Discussion: White Sox Games of the Decade

The White Sox have played over 1600 games since the beginning of the decade, compiling a regular season record of 857-764. They've taken home 3 division titles and a World Series. We've seen a no-hitter, a perfect game, a game 163 victory, a 500th homer, 300th homers on back-to-back at-bats, and two different Sox players break the major league record for most-consecutive batters retired.

It was a pretty good decade. Sure, it could have been better. But it's hard to complain given the list in the previous paragraph.

So I'll open up the discussion to you, and eventually put together a list for us to vote on; in addition to those highlights listed above, what games of the aughts will you remember most in another 10 years?

Besides playoffs/perfecto.....

I can’t remember the exact date, but the game when the sox (iirc, in 1917 unis) scored nine in the first. Anyone remember more about that? My guess is that it was in ’02 or ’03…

If July 2, 2003 isn't on the list

then the list is meaningless. Alomar + Everett playing their first game with the Sox, Konerko breaking out of that goddawful slump to knot it back up in extras, and Hurt winning the game with a blast the next inning. Ozzie’s first year, too. I’m pretty level after most games, but that one had me walking on air after listening to it on the radio. Absofrickinlutely.

by jackie hayes on Nov 27, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

I lost my shit watching that game. It was magical. I screamed at Manuel (don't think Ozzie yet) for PHing PK in the 12th when it was do or die...

But then PK DID – had his first hit after a month on the bench and an Eeyore slump…and kept us goin into more innings… Only to have Frank walk us off…. to Complete the sweep of the Twins nonetheless…. One of the more memorable games I’ve ever experienced in my life.

Not picky, but very sticky....

Ach...

I’ve been beaten with a stupid stick. Yer right, yer right.

I remember feeling pretty good about PK coming in, though. That season was so frustrating, I thought it needed a redeeming moment, and the stars were all aligned there — hated division opponent, slumping star, new faces, perfect way to turn the corner. Iirc, it sounded on the radio like the crowd was really getting behind him — always a nice surprise when a guy is slumping that badly.

I pissed someone off because I wouldn’t leave the car (going out for ice cream) until PK’s ab was finished. Totally worth it.

out here in baltimore I rarely get to see the sox, but happened to be in town for a few days in 03 and caught a buehrle-washburn pitchers duel against the angels. august 18th, 2003, big hurt hit a walk-off to win it 4-2. best game i’ve ever been to (which isn’t picking out of many, but it’s what i’ve got).

I had finished work in Christchurch two days earlier and went on a long-planned drive up to Hanmer Springs. We got into the hotel 15 minutes before the game started on MLB International, and figured we would watch the game, then do some hiking before dinner.

The game lasted into the NZ evening, so we had a late dinner.

Top 10 games I was at in the 2000s

1. 2008 Blackout game…. fucking awesome feeling to beat those jagoffs to get to the playoffs.

2. 2005 World series game 1… obvious reasons.

3. 2005 LCS game 2… AJ Steals first

4. 2005 LDS game 2… Tadahito hits a slam off tubby wells after grafanino makes big error…. punishing 2 of my least favorite sox

5. 2005 LDS game 1…. kicking the living shit out of the beantowners sending chris berman to a mental institution.

6. 6/29/05- In Comerica Park…. The Big Hurt delivers a game winning bomb in the 13th inning causing my wife to get drenched by a beer from a tiger fan in the upper levels.

7. 6/8/2001- Carlos Lee rips a grand slam off of courtney duncan to win the game vs. the cubs…. followed by the 50 fights I saw in the ramps and on the streets after the game. Probably one of the last night games in the series.

8. 9/20/2005- Crede helps us breath a little easier with a walk off homer in the 10th vs. the charging indians.

9. 8/14/2008- Thome, Konerko, Alexei and Uribe go back to back to back to back vs. the Royals.

10. 6/9/2000- White Sox were leading 5-3 with 2 outs in the 9th and Slammin Sammy coming up vs. Foulke… Sammy put our celebration on hold with an absolute rocket into the night to tie the game…. Ray Durham came through in the 14th inning with a shot down the third base line giving the sox the game.

There are so many more…but these were the ones to jump into my head.

obviously game 2,3,4 of the W.S., the El Duque game, the 2005 clincher in detroit.. but i decided to limit it to games i was at.

for sheer magnitude

game 4 of the 2005 world series has to be #1. after that, probably game 2 of the world series then game 3 of the 2005 ALDS. #4-#12— the rest of the 2005 playoff games in any order you like.

2 best regular season games i saw in person:

#1. buehrle no hitter in 2007.

#2. what i call “the pablo ozuna game”, may 3, 2006. he pinch hit for mackowiak with 2 out in the 9th and the sox down by 1. crushed guardado’s first pitch for his 1st career homer to tie the game. he next batted with 2 out in the 11th. i remember thinking seattle’s outfield was playing very deep, especially considering ozuna was up. pablo grounded one up the middle and stretched it into a double! uribe was up next and the outfield went right back to playing extra deep for some unknown reason. uribe hit a short fly to center that seemed to be in the air for 10 seconds but dropped for a single. stupid mariners.

(also, brian anderson made one of the best diving catches i’ve ever seen. pretty sure it was in the 10th inning. awesome.)

Only because we were losing our shit, Jenks had blown the save, and the Chicago Baseball Curse was rearing its fucking head, Ozzie was threatening to quit, and everyone’ sphinchter was as tight as the OM’s girlfriend’s twat (because it has not been road-tested yet). After that, it was just like a pennant enema – everything floooowed. Without Joey rescuing us, we don’t win. I firmly believe that.

What, after 48 years of waiting you think there are any other games that could POSSIBLY not be from 2005? Grow up.

Agreed

The Crede walk off might be the biggest non-playoff WS win of the last 50 years. Sox were tanking and after that they won just about every game through the regular season and playoffs.

For postseason it has to be game 2 against the Angels with AJ and the drop 3rd strike and Crede coming through again. Completely changed the momentum in the series and the rest is history.

i will try not to be redundant

1 game 162 when alexei hit the slam

2 second to last home game when the sox came back from a 5 run deficit vs seattle at cell. Haeger shut them down. In 06 I was there.

3 when dye hit the hour at the garbage dump at wrigley that propeled them to the lead in ’05 after the sox were playing like shit all day. Cub fans were razing me all day before that.

4 iguchis home run in game 2 vs boston

5 when the sox beat the cards 23-6. I just couldn’t believe

But I would say my favorite sox game of the decade was without question. Ws game 2.

Honorable mentions to game 163 alcs game 2. And when crede hit the hour in 12th against indians. I also loved ajs 3 run homer in ’07 vs the cubs and they threw garbage on the field or was that 06?

e-gus list

1. game 163
2. world series game 4
3. el duque, bases juiced, no outs vs Boston
4. game 162, ‘08
5. august 27th, 2007. lowly White Sox play last place Devil Rays, make-up game on a monday afternoon. This game makes the list because it reminded me of my first White Sox games at the old park with only a couple hundred die hards in attendance. About 30 friends and family members were there with me, plus free drinks getting sent two sections over from El Diablo. With the Sox losing 4-0 we passed out the custom lunch bags to wear over our heads to wear from the 8th inning on. Well, the Sox didnt want that to happen, and they turned in this bit of magic to win the game 5-4:
Bottom of the 7th, White Sox Batting, Behind 0-4, Devil Rays’ Edwin Jackson facing 5-6-7
A. Pierzynski Home Run (Fly Ball to Deep RF)
J. Dye Home Run (Fly Ball to Deep LF)
J. Uribe Home Run (Fly Ball to Deep LF)
D. Richar Double to RF (Ground Ball)
Dan Wheeler replaces Edwin Jackson pitching
A. Gonzalez Strikeout Swinging
D. Wheeler Wild Pitch; Richar to 3B
J. Owens Strikeout Swinging
J. Fields Home Run (Fly Ball to Deep LF); Richar Scores
J. Thome Strikeout Looking
5 runs, 5 hits, 0 errors, 0 LOB. Devil Rays 4, White Sox 5.

I had a ticket to that game

We had a patio party and it rained out. No one wanted to go by the time the make-up date came around, and I lost the ticket anyway. Then I dropped my ice cream cone. And a bear attacked me. And then a dinosaur ate the bear and a plane crashed into the dinosaur.

pretty much everyone listed is awesome

I’d add (unless I missed it above) 07-09-2006.

That was the 19 inning game right before the break when they tied it in the 9th off Papelbon, and then again in the 11th off Timlin. They had a great record, but were trying to hang with Detroit. Then after the break, despite their durable outer casing, they suffered from fallapart.

A few that I love and haven't been mentioned

- July 9th, 06 – last game before the All Star break. Bottom 9, 2 out, JD takes Douche Papelbon yard to tie it. Game goes 19. Iguchi walk-off RBI to win it 6:19 after it started, and the Sox avoid the sweep. I had been especially annoyed with the first two losses of that series because I’d been to the Friday nighter, and my section was 50%+ Boston fans, the most detestable fans on the planet.

- Back to back to back to back.

- Savior’s walk-off against the Cubs.

- Blubba Chamberlain’s first Major League loss; Joe Crede says “Welcome to baseball, fatass.” Perhaps I’m paraphrasing.

"I call Dotel, got his ass kick. I call Linebrink, got his ass kick. Everybody I call is the wrong guy. I guess it's my fault!"

I left that 7/9/06 two innings early

and I never leave regulation 9 innings early and seldom fail to stick around for the 10, 11, …, 13-ers.

But this game just sucked and I hated the Red Sox and their fans and just said fuck it.

Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game last year.

by NorthSidePaulie on Nov 29, 2009 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

The games with the one word descriptions: Game 2, El Duque, Blackout, 162.

October 16, 2005. The night the Sox won the AL Pennant, which happened to be my first day of my new job in Chicago. Still have Rooney’s call on my iPod. “Swing and a ground ball to first, KONERKO HAS IT…HE STEPS ON THE BAG…THE WHITE SOX HAVE WON THE PENNANT!”

The Perfecto: I was there.

June 27, 2008: Sox beat Cubs 10-3, first on the road to a sweep. Ryan Dempster lays an egg. Gives up four runs in the third before loading the bases again. Swish cleared ’em, and Hawk was so caught up in the moment that he got the score wrong.

May 25, 2008: Carlos Quentin hits a walkoff homer against the Angels in a Sunday night game on ESPN.

May 19-20, 2006. 5/19, Burls beats Maddux, 5/10 Barrett beats AJ, BA gets suspended, and Iguchi beats Rich Hill.

July 30 – August 2, 2009. All seemed right with the world during that Yankees series. FNS’ game tying homer in the 9th is wiped out by Dewayne’s walkoff single. Beckham impresses Jeter. And Kenny pulls off the trade for Jake Peavy.

June 18, 2005. AJ’s walk off homer against the Dodgers. Was in Rochester, NY for my engagement party. Parents and I hijacked the TV so we could watch the game on WGN. The gal and I didn’t get married.

Garland pitching against bruce chen of the orioles. Just starting to like this teams chances, and still iffy about garland being a really good pitcher all of a sudden. sox up 3-2 1st and third with 2 outs in the top of the eighth, and miggy tejada at the plate. They get in a real battle, and garland strikes him out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. hermanson with the save.

As you may recall, Baltimore was off to a hot start that year and was a formidable team, a good test to see if this team was for real, and if garland was for real. This was the game I started to believe in this team

One of my hero’s as a kid from the S-side gets a roaring ovation from the crowd while wearing green. Then takes Garland deep in his first at bat and also homers later in the game.

Then with men on first and third in the 9th (AJ the go ahead run at third), Pablo lays down a walk-off bunt up the first base side to win it. Fucking Pablo Ozuna!

(which, by the way is the last player we have had on the team that I felt comfortable with at the plate in a bunting situation)
