Best Music of the Decade Thread

The year is running out and we need an new music thread.  In retrospect, it was a pretty remarkable decade of music.  Brian Eno recently summarized it best:

We’re living in a stylistic tropics. There’s a whole generation of people able to access almost anything from almost anywhere, and they don’t have the same localised stylistic sense that my generation grew up with. It’s all alive, all “now,” in an ever-expanding present, be it Hildegard of Bingen or a Bollywood soundtrack. The idea that something is uncool because it’s old or foreign has left the collective consciousness.

What were your favorites?  Let's see some top 5, 10, etc. lists (pointing and laughing is encouraged).  Everyone join in:  The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads...and the old-timers, of course.  Here's mine:

1.  Radiohead - Kid A

2.  Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

2.  Arcade Fire - Funeral

4.  LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

5.  The Streets - Original Pirate Material

6.  Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2

7.  Panda Bear - Person Pitch

8.  Liars - Drum's Not Dead

9.  Burial - Untrue

10.  Fennesz - Endless Summer

going back to eno's comment

i very much agree with it. if all music should be regarded as NOW, i suppose i’ve been spending more time listening to and appreciating music that’s old and foreign.

Eno is more interested/excited about the implications this has on the future of music/art, as opposed to being nostalgic for the ‘good ol’ days’.

Hmm

That Eno guy knows what’s up. And I think he does a good job describing the current moment. If you buy what Eno’s selling, there’s no particular reason to listen preferentially to the music of this decade. The old stuff’s at least just as good and it comes anthologized (in the very least by wikipedia, but Our Band Could Be Your Life is a good example of what I mean also). Not only that, but the old stuff is often hugely relevant. The trend perhaps culminated in Girl Talk, but sampling is obviously very relevant to contemporary pop music. Beyond that, consider how listening to Pet Sounds for the first time either before or after listening to The Shins’ first album, or Person Pitch affects your impression of the latter albums.*

But whatever to all that. Lemme scroll through iTunes and figure it out. These are all just favorites, most of which I’ve listened to a bajillion times. There’s only one Hold Steady album because I only just started listening to them.

TV on the Radio – Dear Science
TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
The New Pornographers – Electric Version
The New Pornographers – Twin Cinema
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna
Of Montreal – Satanic Panic
Girl Talk – Night Ripper
Spoon – GaX5
Spoon – Kill The Moonlight
The Shins – Wincing The Night Away
The Shins – Oh! Inverted World
Panda Bear – Person Pitch
Okkervil River – The Stage Names
Page France – Hello, Dear Wind
Islands – Return To The Sea
The Black Keys – Magic Potion
Sigur Ros – Takk…
The Hold Steady – Separation Sunday
Broken Social Scene – S/T
Broken Social Scene – You Forgot It In People
BRMC – Howl
Andrew Bird – Mysterious Production of Eggs
The Unicorns – Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone
M83 – Dead Cities, Red Seas, Lost Ghosts
Arcade Fire – Funeral
Sun Kil Moon – Ghosts of the Great Way
Grandaddy – Sumday
Grandaddy – Sophtware Slump
Explosions In the Sky – The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
Do Make Say Think – Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn
Deerhoof – Apple O’
Neko Case – Blacklisted
The Microphones – The Glow Pt. 2
Beulah – The Coast Is Never Clear
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – S/T
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack

PS to the people who think every time I talk about music a horse dies tragically: horses aren’t that great. Get over it.

*Digression: my 14 year old brother watched The Shining his first time last November. When the “come play with us” part came on, he started laughing because he’d already seen the parody done on Family Guy. Pretty sure that wasn’t what Kubrick was going for.

You're the first person I've seen list "Get Behind Me Satan" for White Stripes

personally I’d go with De Stijl. Really enjoy that album — still a bit of early early (doubled for emphasis) White Stripes in it but you start to see just how deep and different Jack White really is. White Blood Cells would be number two for me but could definitely see it being number one (like AV Club who listed it as their number one album. OTOH I’m just talking White Stripes here).

by CWSKeith on Nov 30, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I know it's not traditionally considered their best or anything... I didn't even realize De Stijl was from this decade...damn! It seems like they've been around forever...

Honestly, I like all of their albums so so SO very much – I don’t know that a true favorite stands alone. I chose GBMS just because for whatever reason, I reach for it more than any of their others. I sincerely enjoy every track.

And one of my top favoritest WS songs is easily Red Rain….focking rocks my socks every time!!!

Didn’t have the depth of the others, and he had some lyrical crutches (my name is… they call me…). It also has the weakest opening and closing songs of their albums, which isn’t necessarily damning because they absolutely nailed them on the other three albums.

Still, it’s a hell of a debut and I listen to it a lot. Just not start to finish like I do with the other ones.

Right.

The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Patti Smith. Sure, they sucked and influenced none of the bands today (or grunge in the ’90’s).

Fer Chrissakes. They also yanked disco off the front page and hastened its demise, which helped save rock ’n roll.

Yes.

The good stuff was not prolific enough (and has not really stood the test of time, as much of the ’60’s stuff has) to drown out all the whiny Dan Fogelberg/Jim Croce/John Denver/Carole King BS. Now there were some fantastic albums – Springsteen’s “Born to Run”, Dire Straits’ first, The Cars first come to mind – but the decade was known for depressing, empty caloric music.

That, combined with the social, economic, and political issues made the ’70’s tough to listen to.

His first sexual encounters came before he was a teenager, at the hands of a middle-aged man who lured him into his trailer for sex in exchange for money and comic books; at 17 he lost his hetero-virginity to a hooker in Tijuana who gave him the clap; and later, he witnessed the brutal beating and gang-rape of a young woman by a pack of eight Hell’s Angels.

on another music related note

saw times new viking and the axemen last week (as well as sonic youth and the feelies the following night)

times new viking rocked, but as a devoted fan of new zealand 80’s underground music, i was intrigued by the inclusion of the axemen on the bill. i had not heard of them prior to the show (on the bill it said they were formerly on flying nun), but they were nothing liked their contemporaries (the clean, chills, tall dwarves, bats, etc).

it was like old school punk, protest music with a heavy psych / blues (e.g. blue cheer) influence and they rocked. they also got a thumbs up from me for wear track pants and rugby shirts. 4 ugly looking old guys and that’s meant to be a complement playing in a venue full of goddamn indie hipster kids in skinny jeans wearing thick black frames in the audience.

for folks who might be interested, here’s a youtube of a uber lo-fi video produced in the mid 80’s, carmen on ice

oh, and sy and feelies the night after were awesome (and rocked) of course

the optimistic perspective on this is that percent practicing muslim was inversely associated with support of referendum by canton, despite the fact that practicing muslims are much much less likely to have voted. the swiss took a step backwards, but over time perhaps this may be repealed.

There's so much shit out there, man

I’m constantly inundated with new stuff — my brother sends me shit, my friends send me shit, I read shit on here that I need to get to. And at the same time I’m trying to really get into and absorb the stuff I already have.

Anyways, my point is mainly that I’m in no way qualified to create a “Top Ten List of the Decade”. I have some albums I really liked and I have some albums that I thought were superb, but there’s probably stuff that I haven’t gotten to that’s really fucking good. I dunno, maybe I’m just ranting and debating semantics. I still like these lists — like I said, if nothing else it points me to stuff I’ve missed and ought to check out — but don’t put too much stock into them.

That’s why I didn’t take a bunch of time and just made sure to get the ones that jumped out to me and left it in a big mess instead of sorting it. It’s ungainly, but it’s representative of what I listened to.

Also, I’m really interested in which albums from the past decade that I missed while living through it I’m going to get into.

the biggest failing of this decade

was it’s lack of innovative awesome ear bleed rock music. plenty of good stuff to listen to, but there was very little that just completely rocked the fuck out. one of the reasons why the hold steady are cool. it helps being from the twin cities i bet.

I should've amended what I said

I’m not being critical of MM and I didn’t articulate well enough above. I can’t get into MM likely because I haven’t given them the time they deserve. I just listened to Good News for the first time through (although it was while I was writing a paper, so again it wasn’t a fully-attentive listen) and liked what I heard (moreso than any other time), particularly lyrically — they seem to have fun with existentialism and other philosophical shit, and that’s kind of right up my alley.

As to your question — no, I haven’t gotten to either of their first two albums. I likely need to do that. Hopefully I’ll get to both of them over winter break.

I gotta say, I really hate Bon Iver.

I know that a lot of people seem to love him, but a couple years ago he came to my college during our big Spring concert/party/event. This is a day that usually has drinking start in the wee hours of the morning, people hanging out outside all day and so on. He was top bill at the concert. His album was called “desolate and lonely” and he is headlining a college Spring concert. Needless to say, after a ska band, a bluegrass band and a pretty good rock band played, he leaves a fairly crowd waiting for a good period of time. He then starts his lonely guitar playing and singing. People started heckling and booing him, and anybody that acted up in the concert was kicked out. I stayed until the end, but by the time his set (which was pretty short) was over, half of the audience had either left or been kicked out.
I hadn’t heard of him until then, and since I just haven’t been able to get into him.

It's all about the right moment with Bon Iver, IMO. I had the album for a good 4 months before I was able to get past the first couple tracks and get into it. It just required a certain mood for me.

Now that I love it through and through, I can listen to it most any time, and put it on very often on lonely rainy days…
Any time a desperately heartbroken guy goes into solitude for a year, and in that time writes an album, it’s going to have a pretty specific tone and atmosphere about it.

If you find yourself in a solemn mood some time, give it a proper whirl. It may grow on you…

A little "sniper"-focused, and extremely current, and probably not on anyones hit list,

but I believe the version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” that was done by Springsteen and his band AND Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine on lead guitar/vocals that was just on HBO’s 25 year anny of the R ‘n R HOF is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard. I experienced it for the 2nd time last night and was completely blown away (puss-boy was tearing up, I was). Morello having “ARM THE HOMELESS” written on his guitar was a bit much but he absolutely whaled on guitar and vocals.

And Springsteen, bless the OPOS, played his guitar like Neil Young on “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” – just an animal. If I could send a YouTube out with this I would (N.KOREA!) but I would lend an ear. Prepare to be moved.

Same with Sam Moore, though. “Hold On, I’m Comin’” gave me goose bumps. And Buddy Guy rocked the house. I plan on watching this thing (skipping U2/Jagger/B-EP circle jerk as often as it comes on HBO (which ought to be quite often).

You will dance your ass off and have a great time. After searching eBay for NYE GT tickets, looks like it would set you back at least few hundred dollars. I assume because it’s NYE he’ll be doing a longer set (the show I went to was not much longer than an hour), but maybe you’d be better off waiting until he comes back on not such a premium date since you already have some reservations

I'm shocked people haven't been mentioning Black Sheep Boy

For me that is the only album of theirs that has any business in this discussion. The others are nice, but just don’t have the same overall haunting feel throughout the entire album.

by CatBrains on Dec 4, 2009 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

you might be right

For Real kills it and there’s plenty of other good stuff. still, it’s so low key compared to Stage Names.

Mass romantic is soooooo good.

I understand how people could get led astray by their later albums for favorites, but song for song it kicks so much ass.

electric version has a higher hit per song (1:1) ratio and Twin Cinema is more emotionally

affecting. i love TNP (and mass romantic), but i figured i’d only go with 2.

Alter Bridge – Blackbird
Daughtry – Daughtry

Alter Bridge’s lead singer definitely takes some getting used to, for sure – especially if you’re someone who ever even slightly tolerated Creed. But their 2nd effort on Blackbird has some amazing moments.

Some personal favorites that haven't been mentioned

St. Vincent – Marry Me
St. Vincent – Actor
Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours
Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
Architecture in Helsinki – In Case We Die
Menomena – I Am the Fun Blame Monster
Menomena – Friend and Foe
The Beta Band – Hot Shots II (it’s no Three EPs, but that doesn’t qualify)
Camera Obscura – Let’s Get Out of This Country
Badly Drawn Boy – The Hour of the Bewilderbeast
Fiery Furnaces – Gallowsbird’s Bark (most critics seem to think Blueberry Boat is the superior album, but I disagree)

Criminal Underrated (but not recognized enough to be considered “Best of the Decade”):

The Good Life – Black Out – This album from Cursive frontman Tim Kasher is basically Don Draper if he were a musician instead of an ad man. That is to say, it perfectly captures the thought process of men who can’t be satisfied in a monogamous relationship and the effect it has on their lives and their psyche. And despite some experimental touches musically, this album is one the tightest, most cohesive listens of the decade.

Amy Milan – Honey from the Tombs – In her first effort away from Stars (people must have a thing against side projects), Amy Milan made an alt-country album that was largely ignored. While the simply arranged songs may be part of the reason, people are missing out on a wry lyricist that paints beautiful images of falling in and out of love with a lovely but detached voice that keeps it from coming off as bitter or angry. If I am not falling asleep to Iron & Wine or Air, then this is the album of choice for me.

I thought Blueberry Boat was the start of them getting a bit too weird for my tastes

Gallowsbird’s Bark is before that… but yeah still a weird band. And in my experience, weird and polarizing are often directly proportional.

by CatBrains on Dec 4, 2009 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I can buy weird if the band has shown chops to do something else

But between the singer’s six-note range and the starting and stopping, as if they only come up with 45 seconds of musical cohesian, it was like the brother-sister half of the band was defying the audience to like it.

“We don’t have a lot of talent, so we’re going to pretend we’re doing some deep, artistic BS and hope you buy it to lord it over friends you think have less sophisticated musical tastes than you.”

bone thugs and harmony
there were a few more that made me shudder but Ive blocked them from my memory.

Wilco

I disagree on your rap artists

Eminem did some good stuff right when he came to the scene, but I think overall he is very overrated and his newest album was shit.
If I was going to put on hip-hop artists they would be Lupe, Common, Kanye, P.O.S., Brother Ali, Atmosphere, Mf Doom (in all of his different personas), and the Roots released some good stuff this decade.

Regarding Wilco, I really liked Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but would agree that a lot of their other work is overrated. Also, for any drummers, this is a great little nugget by wilco drummer glenn kotche

I was trying to go with people who emerged this decade

Outkast made the cut, but Roots was a consideration as well.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is actually pretty good in large part because of them.

Eminem and Kanye are pretty similar in that they came on strong but then kind of got too big for their own good.
I had to put eminem in there though because this laborer I was working with was a 40 something black dude who didnt eat lunch EVER on account of his other bad habits costing him all of his money. Anyway, he came to work one day and was like, “Did you hear that new eminem record?” It was probably his 3rd album but Im not sure, I said I hadnt checked it out yet. He goes, “That boy was rapping his ass off!” It stuck with me so he made the cut.

I compare it to the NBA, the overall quality has decreased so much that its just not worth my time anymore.
