Sox acquire Mark Teahen?
The Daily News learned the White Sox have agreed to send second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields to the Royals for Mark Teahen, who is expected to replace Jermaine Dye as Chicago's right fielder.
U-God edit: Sox officially re-signed Mark Kotsay. One year, 1.5 mil.

Hate It, unless

This seems like a "I'm sick of this guy hitting homers off of us" acquisition.
Too bad we didn’t deal Fields when he had value. Jesus.

This is a terrible move
What’s wrong with Getz at 2B? He looked like he had a lot of upside.
Teahen does not make the Sox a better team. And the headline should read, “Teahen is expected to be a replacement level player in Jermaine Dye’s position.”

I don't see why they would play him in right
I think they’re gonna use him at third and move Beckham to second.

I guess that'd make some sense.
But that kind of production out of RF doesn’t make sense. Unless we just assume because he K’s all the time he hits home runs.

Hmm... I always thought Teahen was a better defensive player
but Fangraphs doesn’t like him a whole lot. Sure enough, Teahen grades out much better on Tango’s ‘Fans’ Scouting Report’.
You certainly can’t get too upset with who the Sox are giving up — very little upside is heading to KC (unlike, say, MacDougal for Lumsden + Cortes).
by CWSKeith on Nov 5, 2009 9:39 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Two future utility players for a current utility player.
Meh, I think KW could have done better on the open market. Getz has an upside as a regular second basemen, which would have been nice to have.
by Daniel Berlyn on Nov 5, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ehh -- I'd rather gamble on Teahen's upside (2006) than Getz' upside ("regular second baseman" seems like a stretch. Passable seems more apt.)
Teahen’s ZiPS for KC is .265/.328/.420, just about a league average bat. The only issue is his defense (at least according to UZR), but part of that might be the fact that he’s been jerked between 3B and RF for the past two years.

Any guesses on what Teahen will make in arbitration?
$3.75 last year — probably gonna get a slight bump. $4.5-5.5 range seem reasonable? Or do they figure to try and sign him before it gets to that point?

Leave us not panic my friends...
The NY Daily News says he replaces Dye in RF, that is all. I don’t think picking him up as a UTE is such a bad thing, who is the backup at 3B currently? He can also platoon with Nix at 2B, right?

shaking up if they’re going to compete deep. Their offense needs major upgrades.
IMO, Williams is not going to leave the offense to chance and waste the ace starting pitching he’s got.

speaking of dead horses:
Throughout his career he’s logged nearly 2,500 innings in the outfield – mostly the corners – and has a -1 UZR to show for it. That’s not horrible, especially not when contrasted to Jermaine Dye’s dead-horse act the past few seasons. His bat is what it is. Over the last three years his wRAA have ranged from -8.5 to 1.4, with a -3.9 year thrown in for good measure. Given the move to a more hitter friendly park, Teahen’s raw offensive numbers should improve. He is 28-years-old and Cot’s accredits him with service time of 3.155 (years.days). Add a year and Teahen will become a free agent for the first time following the 2011 season.

dave cameron
For the White Sox, this is yet another sign of the questionable talent evaluation methods used by Kenny Williams. There was no reason to give up anything of value for Teahen. All he’s done with this move is give himself a right fielder who shouldn’t play everyday and open up a bigger hole at second base.
not sure how, but cameron seems to be missing that KW is going to show some good talent evaluation by trading john danks to the mariners for jose lopez and fill that hole.

I can understand not being particularly thrilled about it from the Sox’ end, but let’s not act like KC is gaining a whole lot. Getz is interesting but blocked by a much superior player, and Fields’ power isn’t great when you realize he can’t play anything but 1B.

Soxtalk loved Getz...they have to be apoplectic over there...
I have to say, Getz is not going to hit for power and I don’t think he’s going to be anything more than adequate in the field (probably worse). His value in the future will hinge on him getting on-base and that’s not a sure thing.
So, I don’t think the Sox gave up too much. Teahen’s probably not good, but he can play RF better than Getz or Fields I suppose.
I assume the Sox will bring in a 3B or 2B somehow (Danks+prospects for Jose Lopez!!)
At any rate, KW just made the offseason interesting.

I don't think getz was disapponting in a first full year...if he played the whole thing,
he would have been one of the top 3 in steals in the league with barely any CS…and I can’t see him slowing soon…and his defense was better than Nix…which who we got now…
and if money were no object, I’m sure we would be hearing about Figgins already…but if we get beaton him by 3 mil, I am going to hate this trade
by Anonymous #5 Starter on Nov 5, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
His defense was most certainly not better than Nix'
seriously, where does this crap emanate from? I’m not one who wants to see Nix as a starter — I think he’s perfectly suited as a backup infielder — but it’s pretty obvious that unless Getz has an absurd breakout with the bat, Nix is the better of the two.

the nix v. getz thing
was beginning to remind me of BA v JO v whoever. as if one of these was so better than the other. at least this trade will spare us that this offseason.

yeah man.
I was worried that gruesome twosome would take turns ranging between bad and mediocre all year, IF this trade happens, atleast they are looking to improve at second base.

At any rate, Nix was the one with the higher ceiling
His range at 2B is (I think) among the best in baseball. And he obviously has big power for a middle IF. Unfortunately he has an abysmal contact rate and probably won’t ever overcome that.
Neither guy should be starting anywhere.

oh yeah his range is outstanding.

If his range is as good as you say and he retains a 20 AB/HR rate
Then he’s still pretty valuable as a 2B starter, even with a 320 OBP.

I'm not sure he can keep up a .320 OBP
And, for whatever reason, I seems like clubs will tolerate someone like Getz starting if they can hit .270. But they won’t tolerate a guy hitting .220 even if their OBP is a 100 points higher.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 5, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i'm still sticking with .240/.310/.420 for Nix's true talent with the bat
there’s plenty of reason to start him if that’s the case.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Nix be the almost everyday
second baseman. Keeny gets a platoon partner for Teahen in right (Byrd?) and Teahan can also spell at second and third.. A little more versatility?
by dantesox on Nov 5, 2009 11:37 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
anyone else think the platoon idea is bad?
i mean swappingg a serious of mediocre players at any position as opposed to one good full time player for the same $$…
A platoon of Teahan and Byrd for 8 mil would not look nearly as nice as anyone available at 8 per year

Nothing from Getz
I saw a CST Cowley Tweet that Getz didn’t know about the trade (http://tinyurl.com/ylqqr4b).
Just read CSN’s Chuck Garfien spoke to Getz who said “nothing is confirmed” (http://tinyurl.com/yfpjfjm).
I’m kinda bummed to see Getz go if this is made official soon.
Looking for more updates. Pls post stuff if you find. Thanks.

I feel as though this is a lateral move at best
unless the Sox are planning on signing a 3B. Then play Teahan in right, a DP combo of Alexei/Beckham, and the signed 3B. If thats the plan, I have no issue with this. The team would be best if Nix is a utility guy anyways.

Well, it's not a good trade because Teahen is too expensive
They didn’t give up much, but Teahen’s performance is crap and they could have done something better with the $4M he’ll be making.
But, if this trade means Pods isn’t re-signed and they bring in a good player to fill 2B or 3B then at least this move isn’t particularly injurious to their 2010 season.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 5, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So, will Pods DH then?
I assume that Teahen will be the RF since he’s awful in the IF. That closes the OF opening. Hmm.
