KW explained to Getz that they needed to "shuffle things up.''

KW says Teahen is now the starting 3B and Beckham is starting second baseman.

Post your complaints here.

Also: KW says talks with Pods have broken down and now it's not likely they sign him.

And: KW on his payroll: "We’ll spend whatever we have available, but there’s not much.’’

Dislike this trade

unless I am missing something here I feel it was a bad move. It is much easier to replace corner OF than middle INF. Also, Teahen is not a good player. Depending on how much we receive in cash, the Sox could have signed a legit corner OF for 5 to 8mm in FA. theres a few other reasons why i do not like this, but am curious of other point of views.

To top it off the Twins traded gomez for hardy. that seems like a good deal for the twins.

Well...

Assuming Kotsay is your backup RF prior to this trade, and his injury history causes pause, and you really have no backup for him there and need someone besides Nix to back up 3B, then Teahen makes sense as a super-ute.

A trade or FA signing for RF is still on the to-do list presumably.

The cash back in the deal gives me hope he will be a super-ute.

He’s a poor man’s DeRosa and having a lefty utility guy does have value. I just don’t want to see him as an everyday 3b, 2b or outfielder. It does give KW some flexibility now in trades or FA markets. Still, we have more questions than answers now about how this roster will take shape.

Beckham may put undue pressure on himself at the plate

I heard him on the Score a couple of weeks ago after he received the 2nd ROY award talk about sometimes putting pressure on himself at the dish because of his defense. I hope he can make a smooth transition to 2nd. I don’t like the idea of playing musical chairs with him. Let him settle down. I do like the idea of his bat at that position though. If that is his final move he can be our Utley.

Teahan at 3rd is not a good move in my opinion. He should be coming off the bench. I don’t know how much cash is coming over but it should be enough to justify him as a supersub alongside Nix/Kotsay. Maybe KW will look at Beltre for a 1 or 2 year deal. He is the only ‘real’ 3rdbaseman on the market worth looking at IMO.

I wouldnt mind KW testing the waters on Blalock or Ankiel as well even though they are both Boras clients. We still need some more non-baseclogging power in the lineup and I think they would fit well as 1b/DH or OF/DH options.

He was a rookie still learning a new position in the bigs while simultaneously trying to hold his own against big time pitching. He will have to get up to speed quickly is ST with Alexei on relays, etc so that the errors dont carry over to the real games.

I like the idea of this deal...

I think we’re trying to get some lineup flexibility by getting another multi-position player. Then again, if I were going to do that I would go after DeRosa instead of DeRosa Lite. And, I have to ask, is DeRosa Lite equal in value to Fields AND Getz. I’m not sure…

So, lukewarm is the feeling I’m left with until KW makes some more moves. Let’s see what Crazy Kenny does next…

by echo on Nov 6, 2009 12:45 PM CST reply actions

Sadly...

Teahen isn’t equal to a full DeRosa. He’s about a half DeRosa or 3/4 DeRosa. We could argue about Teahen’s relative value, but in the end, age non-withstanding, he’s still DeRosa Lite.

by echo on Nov 6, 2009 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Ha!

I fucking hate the Cubs… but you have to appreciate players that really do provide you versatility. Middle of the road guys become more valuable like Scutaro. Sadly, the closest we’ve had to multipositional versatility was Mackowiack… Do we really want that again?

Still… Nice zing, Andronicus…

by echo on Nov 6, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

When Did

Josh Fields get good? I know Hawk once compared him to Killebrew once, but Josh Fields sucked in 2008 and 2009. I don’t understand the love for him. This trade was pretty much Getz for Teahen+2million. I say Sox win.

by Otter7 on Nov 6, 2009 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't state that clearly...

Getz was the big piece. I was hoping KW could fleece someone with Fields. There’s no Fields love here. He’s sucked from day one. I don’t feel I saw Getz play enough to formulate an opinion, but I did like what I saw. That being said, Teahen for Getz is probably a decent swap. Fields is a throwaway that I wish could have returned something. Teahen is interesting and who knows if he can turn a corner and play to a high level.

ok, so according to kenny, we've upgraded 2b, leaving a hole at 3b

Teahan as the starter at the hot corner though? yuk.

How close are our minor league third basemen?
Can Viciedo even stick there? I dont really think so, and hes years away regardless.

Theres nothing really in house. Nix? I dont think so.

What about free agents:
Half kiddingly: How much would Crede cost the Sox?
What about Uribe?

Beltre is a type B free agent, so are Figgins and DeRosa.
Can the Sox afford them?

I don't like figgins. He will be 32 next season and I doubt he will get any better

I think he is a product of Soscia ball and nice weather year round. Beltre as mentioned by larry is a Boras product but I still hope they see what he wants.

I wonder if Blalock can play 3rd or if those days are over. He’s a Boras client as well but KW can’t keep Teahen there. We need some semblance of power in that spot and I doubt MT will break out like he did a couple years ago. Derosa had some wrist injury and surgery. He’s not getting younger so he’s risky.

by BlakJakk on Nov 6, 2009 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

but would you take Figgins over Getz? Cuz that’s what we’re really talking about here. I would. Adding him and moving Becks to second or preferably short would probably improve our infield…

3B: Figgins, Teahan, Nix
SS: Alexei, Gordo
OF: Rios, Q, Teahan, Kotsay, Figgins
DH: Q, Paulie

This leaves DH & OF as the big holes. I guess you can add “leadoff” as well.

There is a chance they go internal and roll the dice with Danks & Flowers. I doubt that happens, especially with both positions. Thome is a possibility for DH, obviously. At this point, I think he’d platoon.

Kotsay and Teahen are good utility signings with veteran instincts I can't see how this is a failure when we also got a couple milliion from it

Kenny always plays his cards smart. I think he is building up for something special because it seems like these 2 are good insurance moves because not many new young folks are on the way to join the White Sox other than maybe Jordan Danks. we should expect a pivotal signing of someone special soon and then after they will be broke. So Kotsay and Teahen are the experienced guys to rotate around because you can’t have a sox style rotation of players and lineups with inexperienced youngbloods.

On Teahan's splits…

In US Cellular, Comerica, and… the thing in Cleveland whose name I don’t recall… he is slugging about .510 in those parks.

Is it fair to suggest that a move to our park might be just the trick to unlock some power that has been repressed in KC (where he slugged .424)?

By the way, be glad he won’t play in the Metrodome ever again; the numbers are ugly as sin.

The rationale behind the Swisher deal was solid.

Much like the shit he took in the second half of the season.

what does Teahan’s roster cost project for next year now?

subtracting Getz's salary

It’ll cost about 2 mil for the whole transaction. You won’t hear it from the Andersons and Camerons of the world, of course.

I never thought I'd reach hitlesswonder's depressing level of negativity (realism?), but this move has the makings of doing it

Make the team defense worse? Check. Jerk around Beckham some more? Check. Not a whole bunch of $$$ to spend (without a trade of Jenks, of course, which would be selling low)? Check. So it’s looking like another half-assed attempt at winning the Central. Joy.

by CWSKeith on Nov 6, 2009 3:09 PM CST reply actions

During an offseason, that would have been a heck of a haul.

Now with teacup and I’m assuming another move for a corner of’er – that makes for a very active offseason.

The patchwork bullpen is what is gonna give me an ulcer though.

Nov – Swisher trade II, Linebrink
Dec – Viciedo, Javy trade, Q! trade

That's fine -- I'm not pining for them to spend the necessary money on someone like Figgins this winter

I’m just not particularly keen on making the defense (and, subsequently, the pitching) worse by making Beckham learn another new position.

Have you been able to read between the lines regarding RF? Any ideas what the plan is there? I have yet to get to KW’s actual quotes, but I imagine the Danks talk is the writers taking way too seriously his AFL numbers?

by CWSKeith on Nov 6, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

i think the concerns regarding beckham's defense are overblown.

and no idea regarding RF. but jordan danks is not going to be the answer.

by larry on Nov 6, 2009 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

After watching him play 3b for the first time and performing like he did,

2b should be a breeze for him. It’s also a good idea to get your best infielders where there are more chances. Beckham should be a very good defensive second baseman. We’ll just have to hope Teahen develops into an average fielder if he’s left in one position for a year.

assuming Savior can adjust to 2B like he did 3B

and Alexei can keep his head on straight, we should have a pretty solid D up the middle.

But Paulie will catch anything hit right at him. He’s a great “scooper” too.

I agree with you re: Beckham's defense

my concern is moving him yet again, the third different position for him in the past year. I’m particularly concerned about moving him from 3B to 2B — intuitively that would seem to be a position where he’ll be more susceptible to injury (I seem to recall some discussion about this a while back…), not only because he’ll be ‘learning the ropes’ but also because of the double plays he’ll have to turn.

Regarding KW’s money quote, I think I read that a bit too pessimistically. I could be wrong but I’d say it’s more along the lines of, “No, we’re not going/can’t go out and spend 3/$30 (or something similar) on Figgins, but picking up Thome + a cheap outfielder (Byrd?) is reasonable.”

by CWSKeith on Nov 6, 2009 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

move Beckham back to short

considering Alexei sure as hell couldn’t handle it. Your shortstop should also be the leader of the infield. Alexei at 2nd. period.

by Ozzie Montana on Nov 7, 2009 12:13 AM CST up reply actions

Your "Alexei at 2B: not so much" comment seems to say Alexei is a bad second-baseman

but again, it’s tough for me to say that a guy who looks like a decent enough SS can’t play, or would be bad at playing 2B. Seems to me you’re making way too much of his UZR last season without thinking about the context of last season (as well as the fact that it’s a tiny sample size).

by CWSKeith on Nov 6, 2009 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

Alexei wasn't a good 2B from the start, eye tests and metrics alike thought he was below average there.
But Guillen is still not sure what the long-term plans are for Ramirez.
“Right now we have to work with him at second base if he’s going to make it,’’ Guillen said. "He’s pretty rough at second base. He hasn’t played there that much. I’m going to talk to [general manager] Kenny [Williams] and see what we think and what we’re going to do with this kid. I think he’s got a lot of talent. I’m not sure if he’s going to end at shortstop or second base or play everywhere, but the first game he showed he’s good and showed a lot of speed. He seems like he knows what he’s doing.’’

That’s what Ozzie said in Spring Training 08. Given what we know, I’d say Ramirez was a below average second basemen and it would be questionable to move him back to second. When you’re a shortstop that long, playing on the opposite side of the bag is like playing upside-down. They have a pretty good middle-infield as is, and they have Alexei controlled for four more years so it isn’t like he’s just been holding a spot.

by Daniel Berlyn on Nov 6, 2009 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

I don't necessarily disagree with any of that

Ramirez was likely below average in 2008, sure. I’m just saying that if he were to be moved there permanently, there’s no reason for us to expect he’d be below average there in the future.

And I’m not sure what use a quote from ST ‘08 is — IIRC, it was his first time playing the position. One would expect he’d look quite raw out there.
