Pods

Based on what KW said

‘As far as Podsednik is concerned, we already had talks and a little bit of dialogue with him. It’s not likely based on what he wants, so we’ll have to look elsewhere.‘’
You pick a guy up off the scrap heap who in all likelihood was not going to play any more baseball in the majors unless we grabbed him, and now he’s asking for more than we’re willing to give him? Not that I want him back but you’d think the guy would have a little loyalty.

Since you don't know what the years/numbers are, and you don't want him back anyway,

why would his lack of “loyalty” bother you? Maybe Dye could say the same for the Sox after giving them a discount for signing here?

guess he owes us one i guess for saving him from retirement

as far as dye, dye can’t realistically believe anyone would pay him 12m. i’d be inclined to believe that we would treat him better if he didn’t poop the bed down the stretch this year.

by Shakey on Nov 9, 2009 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

Guess the Sox owe HIM one for for coming off the scrap heap and producing.

And for the record, I don’t want him back either. I praise him grudgingly.

And eff his baserunning too.

You don't even know what he asked for..

The White Sox could have offered a spot in the minor leagues for all you know. Unless someone has the details of what he turned down in comparison to what other offers he will see, I have no reason to believe the guy is any more or less loyal than anyone else in baseball.

beckham on the trade
Kenny called me before pulling the trigger on the deal. He basically just asked for my approval on moving to second base. I really appreciated him doing that, but was surprised he even asked. That meant a lot. And it’s really tough to see Chris go as he was my best friend on the team. We had a real good talk last night and I think we both wish we were on the same team, but both of us realize it’s out of our control. And we joked about the two closest friends I had on the team (Getz and Josh Fields), and that I am playing both of their positions. It’s going to be difficult to replace Chris because he was an excellent second baseman and I am sad to see him go.

I caught a 25ft swell this weekend that comes around to this coast once every decade. But I'm sorry... I forgot that if the OT wasn't soccer or running (YAAAWWWWN), it wasn't approved for discussion on the site.

We have 6 months to discuss corner outfielders.
I surf nearly every weekend in frigid waters, swimming around the Pacific Ocean, interacting with sea creatures that the majority of you will never see outside of a tank at a goddam aquarium, and talk about it here very little to never.
So, so, SO terribly sorry I brought it up. How could I be so boring!!

I’ve been swimming in that same ocean for the last 26 years, and I have seen my share of sea creatures, out side of a “goddam aquarium.”
25 foot swell? Where were you, at Maverick’s?
Sounds like you’re ready for Waimea Bay.
Be careful out there.

by oahu420 on Nov 9, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

Easy now? I said "the majority"....and was only pointing out that what WU is yawning over (my rarely-discussed OT of surfing) is actually pretty neat and out of the ordinary for "the majority" of people on this board.

The swell was hitting our coast at 25 ft, but I surfed the inner Straits of Juan de Fuca where it was about 8-10 ft in size, but perfectly shaped (which is the rarer on the Pac NW coast) and lining up on the horizon – which so rarely happens here.

No matter my skill level, I have no interest in ever surfing Waimea, nor Mavericks, nor Pipeline, nor Teahupoo, etc….
I’m more of a long-boarder and not enough of an adrenaline junkie to need those big waves. ;)

by Scotty Ballgame on Nov 10, 2009 10:29 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

well, that's the part i haven't figured out yet.

whole ‘draft’ thing. not sure how much surplus value that needs to be made up in such a trade. Aj is likely to be a type A. crawford is currently a B but close enough that he could be an A pretty easily after next year. then you have to figure out what you think each of their performances will be next year. the problem i’m having is that i think hudson is too much (and obviously this whole thing is premised on flowers sticking around) and the rest of the white sox’ prospects aren’t enough. danks just isn’t that good and OF doesn’t seem to be a position the rays would ideally want, either. throwing in viciedo wouldn’t help, either, because of his salary.

at any rate, i think the rays would want to cut salary significantly if they get rid of crawford so the AJ idea probably is a non-starter anyway.

I have no problem selling high and selling the hype on Hudson this winter.

In fact, I think he is our best option for getting solid return for our holes in the OF/DH next year. Look at what we got for McCarthy who was being hyped like Hudson. If not in a Crawford deal, I’d be contacting Colorado about a Hudson for Carlos Gonzalez or Seth Smith deal. They have 5 outfielders who could start for most teams and they need young, cheap pitching.

I want us to sell high on Hudson

There are several arguments that could be made to consider it. A lot of his success will hinge on the development of this 3rd pitch. I can’t say that his mechanics will make him more prone to injury, but they don’t resemble those of say Buehrle’s that have proven to be sustain lower risk. He has shown a tendency towards the fly ball. Clearly our minor league clubs are rather depleted of top-tier talent, but the starting rotation is our greatest strength and in least need of support.

I had trouble thinking of the combination of suitor/reasonable return for Hudson. Ideally, I think he’d be packaged with either AJ or Jenks to provide us financial flexibility for the salary we’d be accepting through said trade or either on the FA market. This obviously isn’t the type of deal KW needs to force, but I feel it’s something he should pursue to address our weak offense

by 3E8 on Nov 9, 2009 7:45 PM CST up reply actions

GM's don't sell high

If you trade a player, the other team will most likely not give up anything more than the player’s value. Whatever that may be is up to them to decide, but it won’t be based purely on Hudson’s minor league numbers.

by Daniel Berlyn on Nov 9, 2009 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

And you don’t have to get back more value than you are trading. You should be trading from a strength to acquire a good player you have a need for.

As for 20-year-old Dayan Viciedo, Williams hasn’t completely ruled out Viciedo staying at third base, adding that farm director Buddy Bell has been supportive of Viciedo’s development.

“Do we think ultimately he might go to the other side (first base) because of the athleticism we want and the way we’re shaped?” Williams asked. “There’s a possibility, but it’s too soon because you don’t know when the next deal may come.”

Here's the real question:

what fringe MLB first baseman is going to play in Charlotte this year to succeed the thrones of Brad Eldred, Ben Broussard, and Daryle Ward?

the “way we’re shaped” or the way Viciendo is shaped? Or has he slipped down (serious question)?

Even so, White Sox general manager Ken Williams said he would ask for Quentin’s permission to move him from left field if there was a deal that would require Quentin to switch positions.

Williams said he sought assurances last week from Gordon Beckham before acquiring Mark Teahen, which will cause Beckham to move from third base to second.

“If I were to move Carlos Quentin from right field, I’d absolutely would have that conversation with him first,” Williams said.

Lukewarm stove horseshit:
ChiSox looking for more offense — 6:03 p.m.
Several days after acquiring Mark Teahen from Kansas City, White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said he would like to add another left-handed bat to his lineup.

“As we stand right now, there’s not anything obvious that we need, other than perhaps another left-handed hitter,” Williams said Monday. “Whether that guy’s a power guy, or an on-base-percentage/speed guy, or some combination of both, I don’t know.”

But after adding Alex Rios and Jake Peavy during the season, it doesn’t appear that the White Sox will invest heavily in the free agent market.

In time, the Chicago farm system could produce the left-handed hitter that Williams wants. The GM said he feels “the same way about” 23-year-old outfielder Jordan Danks “as I felt about Gordon Beckham at this stage last year.”

“That’s pretty good,” Williams added.

Beckham, of course, came up this season and blossomed into a Rookie of the Year candidate. Beckham is slated to play second base in 2010.

De Luca says talks are heating up

That would be kickass: Teahen and Pods being the big offseason acquisitions, and costing actual money at that. What’s the point of trading for Peavy if you have to fill 33% of your batting order with crap?

One of the better crashes.

The bus punched a hole in a bathroom, so you could see water shooting out of what used to be a faucet.

Between the big hole in the house, and the pile of bricks in the bus, it’s amazing that no one was seriously hurt.

Free rides for seniors may be Blago's lasting legacy.

He may be an alleged felon with a dirty mouth…but he laid down one dandy political third rail.

Unfortunately, we have to pay the bills.

I say we use seniors for Space Exploration...

1-They are light, so sending them up is cheaper than young-uns with muscle mass.
2- They will appreciate the lack of gravity for their joints
3- they dont eat much, so can go farther on more
4- dont mind sleep- hyper or other types.
5- we got lots of em!

My Modest Proposal, anyway….

I can’t really argue with Andrus topping the list but Beckham should be ranked higher than all the pitchers, imo.

I still think Porcello was more “impactful” in his team’s games than was Becks, even though he had fewer opportunities. I of couse have nothing to back this up. Shred away.

And Becks at the dish. At least long enough to Buck someone and get even.
