The White Sox have decided against offering salary arbitration to their free agents, outfielder Jermaine Dye, right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel, outfielder Scott Podsednik and backup catcher Ramon Castro, a decision needing to be made by 11 p.m. CT on Tuesday.

And in the process of coming to this financial conclusion, they might have helped Dotel's value on the open market.

It should be noted that when I first read the title, I thought

“Pods and Castro were type A or B???” which of course was completly untrue

didnt know you could still offer arb to non-A/B types though I probably should have been able to guess that

I don't get why

they wouldn’t offer it to Dotel. If he accepts you get a reliever you desperately need. If he declines you get 2 picks. Seems like a no brainer to me. Sox dropped the ball here.

Actually, I agree here

If we’re going to waste 3-4 million on Crockpot, then we can afford the risk of Dotel/draftpicks

actually yeah...

did you see that bullpen last year? At least he could come in and get a big strikeout for you….nobody else from the right side seemed to be able to handle that job. I would feel a lot better with Dotel in that pen than without. He’s obviously a better option than Linebrink and Pena.

Liney? Sure.

Pena? Not so obvious. 44% of the time Dotel had the 3 True Outcomes as his outcome. Too many dingers/BB’s for my taste. And he’s another year older.

so you wouldn't have offered it?

sure he isn’t the best reliever… but i think he is better than what we have now (and that we are going to get)…. he wouldn’t have been a major cost…. if he signed elsewhere you would get picks… i don’t see the downside…. and I believe come june/july everyone will want relief help.

He made $6MM last year.

Wagner just signed for $7MM. Dotel’s price is only going up. Hence the $7MM.

dotel isn't billy wagner

at any rate, not that it makes much difference, but he’d be much more likely to have gotten essentially what he got last season instead of a large raise.

by larry on Dec 2, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

$6MM to $7MM is not that large, in MLB context.

And yes, he’s not Wagner. He isn’t recovering from surgery, either. Nor is he 38 years old. Just sayin’. (And it’s an estimate for argument’s sake.)

He probably would have cost the sox around $7m through arbitration.

He is not worth that. I would much rather fill a bullpen spot with Hudson or another arm from our system at the minimum and spend the money on an outfield bat.

Do your research.

Did we not have one of the best bullpens in 2005? Has Jenks not been one of the more reliable closers in MLB? Has Thornton not been one of the best set-up guys? You are talking about depth. You don’t pay a lot for depth.

by Hatchetm on Dec 2, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

moar

An example of the use of fungibility in economics is gold, which is often said to be fungible. This means that one gram of gold is equivalent to any other gram of gold. There is no qualitative difference between one example of the commodity and another. Wool on the other hand is less fungible. One bale of wool is not necessarily qualitatively equivalent to another bale of wool. In discussions about the characteristics of money, the term often refers to qualitative equivalence with regards to market value. So one gram of gold is worth as much as any other gram of gold while the value of wool bales varies due to differences in quality.

by Hatchetm on Dec 2, 2009 12:43 PM CST up reply actions

starting over...

the phrase “relievers are fungible” is meant to convey that relievers are more fungible than position players or starters. variance in performance is lower; replacement level is higher. spending should reflect that proportionally.

if they are like gold in that any individual bit of gold is like any other, that’s fine — though it seems crude: any weight of gold is literally worth the same as another equivalent weight, one reliever is not exactly like the other. the differences in one starter to the next make relievers relatively fungible by comparison. so i assumed you were implying that gold was similarly ill-valued relative to possible other commodities.

by colintj on Dec 2, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

no, i meant you generally get what you pay for...

in 2008, 42 relievers were signed as free agents for contracts of less than $1.5million.

32 actually pitched in the majors in 2009

8 were able to pitch 45 innings with an ERA less than 4.5

3 of those would actually have been classified as “good”

the names: saito, aardsma(!), cormier

so by chance about 1 in 12 of these guys turned out to be good.

by Hatchetm on Dec 2, 2009 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

i generally agree

but paying out 11M for 1.4 WAR over 2 years seemed to kenwo to be a good investment.

in your example (sss warning, obvs), it takes 5 to ensure replacement level performance from 1 relief spot. if you’re like every other club and you already have a few such pitchers at the minimum, grabbing 2 more for 3M total guarantees replacement level performance and still leaves you significantly below the Dotel/Linebrink cost curve.

A commodity, at least in my lexicon,

tends to perhaps be less valuable if it is easily sold/transacted. My use of “fungible” was to mean thae same as yours – not as valuable. Perhaps I’m equating “commodity” (e.g. gold) with fungible in the sense that my wife is an asset, and may be a commodity to some, but is not “fungible” to me and thus worth more than gold.

offering dotel arb would have been a huge mistake. He made $6 million last year. So with arb he was likely around 7 million. To get an idea of the reliever market Billy Wagner just signed for 7 million! Dotel will be ecstatic if he gets 3 mill on the open market. he would’ve accepted arb so fast your head would have spun. If you want dotel, you can still get him for much less than 7 mill.

they could potentially get two first rounders and two supplemental picks back though.

Evidently, they made the decision that Wagner was worth more than either or both Gonzalez and Soriano. I’m not sure I agree with their move but I don’t think $7m is too bad a deal for Wagner. He still brings it in the mid 90’s from the left side.

part of that article was " Podsednik’s camp …… the White Sox aren’t willing to go more than one year.’ I mean I figured this was the case but I did have a recurring nightmare that KW was gonna do a “liney” and sign pods for 2 years. It appears they are taking the appropriate approach with pods: one year, low price, no starting position guarantee or nada.

Every good port begins with a slut.

- homesickalien

by Scotty Ballgame on Dec 2, 2009 1:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I had to revisit this and I think I am right

Alomar – Spit = Everett – headbutt

For Example:
Alomar = 2
Spit = 1
Everett = 4
headbutt = 3

So
2-1 = 4-3

Then
(2-1)/3 = (4-3)/3

1/3 = 1/3

No?

"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

by BobbySouthSide on Dec 2, 2009 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

doesn't work, by using numbers

you’re implying there is a known relationship between headbutt, spit, alomar and everett other then the Transitive Propery of Pods, TPoP for short.

TPoP gives us Alomar – Spit = Everett – Headbutt, to divide each side by Headbutt…

( A – S )/ H = ( E – H ) / H
( A – S )/H = E / H – H / H
( A – S )/H = E / H – 1
( A – S )/H + 1 = E / H

I don’t know what “Everett divided by Headbutt” equals, but I doubt its Bin Laden.

There is no fcking way the White Sox should be paying

7 million for a middle reliever. The fungible argument is good but I’d side more with volatitity. Too many uncle Cliffs who sold their soul to the devil and regressed a great deal the next year. Personally I think Pena will be better than Dotel anyway next year.

Ozzie doesn’t use the pen much and the starters are A+. The Sox get in trouble when they “try” and buy a pen.

but like TDogg is pointing out above, you should be able to get several relievers(I realize 7 is a bit much but the post was tongue in cheek) for the money that was spent on Dotel, throw them against the wall, and see what sticks.
