I'd be open to that.

But, that still leaves you needing a left-handed bat and the outfield/DH thing gets pretty crowded.

Price?

What kind of trade value do you see being needed to pry him loose from the Yankee’s? If he comes anywhere close to his overall projected fan WAR value for 2010, I’m all for this move. Cheap and under control for several more years if I remember correctly.

Not sure what the Royals were offering

or if they even offered anything, but I gotta think we could top it(and the offer still being not a whole lot). Gardner would fit very nicely here.

need to bat him 2nd or 6/7, no?

what about rios in the leadoff spot? too much “pop” from his bat as well? but KW will probably pick somebody up, hopefully not Pods!

by Jack M on Dec 11, 2009 8:31 AM CST reply actions

so you would rather have Beckham lead off instead of Pods?

This doesn’t make any sense. I will take Pods back even with his terrible defense. Putting Beckham in the leadoff spot is a giant waste of his RBI potential. Beckham needs to be in the 3rd spot in the order IMHO. He’ll be our best hitter in 2010.

by jimmyjr on Dec 11, 2009 9:43 AM CST up reply actions

why?

His offensive numbers were not awful. If I remember correctly, he batted at or near .300. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not clamoring for them to re-sign him, but I disagree with you on Beckham leading off.

by jimmyjr on Dec 11, 2009 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

Additionally

Why in the world would you give him a two year deal?

by chiefgint09 on Dec 11, 2009 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

Not likely

but he does have a new workout regime which kept him healthy for once. Good point though, another year older and slower = more pickoffs and worse defense. My main issue with all this is to not have Beckham lead off, I don’t really care if they don’t re-sign Pods.

and i agree w/ beckham not leading off due to wasting his rbi potential

That was the point i was making. I don’t know if you can put him in the 3 spot yet, I’d rather see him 2/6/7 personally. What about Rios leading off? Has that been discussed by anyone or is there just zero chance of that happening? Has he ever done it in his career?

by Jack M on Dec 11, 2009 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

:/

Why would we want one of our worst bats at the front of the lineup getting tons of PAs rather than one of our best?

by chiefgint09 on Dec 11, 2009 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

not saying i'm for it entirely or advocating it

just curious if it was an option at all, probably isn’t

its not a terrible idea

if he can get his obp up around 350 again, which he did in 06/07 and was 337 in 08. he runs the bases well.

I've got a question

is there an inverse relationship between the amount of time that people talk about lineup construction (specifically regarding leadoff men) and the difference that such tinkering makes to a teams record at the and of the season?

It's much more important to talk about than to actually fill out the lineup card.

This is why god created cold weather and hot stoves. And White Sox Interactive.

Though seriously, I think I’ve read that your “optimized” lineup (high OBP/speed leading off) means about 10 runs or 1 win per season versus the ones you’ll see Ozzie and others use.
