Best movies of the decade
I was thinking about the previous fanpost on music and was thinking along similar lines for music, regardless of format, language, popularity, year it was produced, etc, movies are far more accessible now in the digital age. Most of the movies I list are foreign..the Bourne series was borderline for me, I think that series lifted the bar for spy/action thrillers
Crouching tiger hidden dragon
In the mood for love
Y tu mama tambien
Lord of the rings trilogy
L'enfant
Pan’s labyrinth
The wind that shakes the barley

i havent heard of them
but after a quick google search, they sound interesting.
DIG! is one of the funniest movies of the decade. its about the dandy warhols and brian jonestown massacre as they courted major labels during the nineties. THe lead singer of BJM is certifiably insane in an incredibly amusingway
My kid could paint that was the best movie of 2007 about a 5-year-old whose abstract paintings sold for 5 figures each. it becaomes a referendum on truth, authenticity, the purpose of story telling. an absolutely brilliant film.
king of kong and spellbound are similar sports type stories about spelling bees and donkey the arcade game. great crowd pleasers.
documentaries can be wildly entertaining, and its sad that they are given short shrift by the general public. 30 for 30 on ESPN has been very good so far this year as well.

Ive seen alomost all of those thanks to Netflix.
My kid could paint that and Jesus Camp were both really good. Mark Cuban was the money behind Enron flick. Also really good.
Based on your list Im adding Dig! and Lake of Fire ASAP, even though I wasnt that impressed with King of Kong.
The one on Walmart: The High Cost of Low Prices was pretty good despite low production quality.

I don't think I would use that word
It is (understandably) not very objective. I guess it comes down to whether you buy into the conclusion or not. I find it sort of hard to do so, but either way it is almost certainly worth watching if you think you have the stomach for it. What is the point of cinema, whether fiction or not, if not to elicit an emotional response?
I disagree....
The conclusions seemed pretty irrelevant to me. As long as you can avoid any spoiler alerts and don’t know where it’s going, it’ll be one of the most (if not the absolute most) powerful films of any type that you’ll ever see in your life.
For me, it was about the journey and the twist.
Also, if you have half a soul you’ll be absolutely bawling throughout the entire thing.

Don't get me wrong
It is an incredibly powerful experience, but that is because the story is incredibly powerful. I just wouldn’t use the word masterpiece because that would denote a strongly crafted film. The story is amazing, but the production of the documentary is not spectacular.
Agree with that
Michael Bay couldn’t have ruined that story.

Kill Bill???
Ill admit I enjoyed them but seriously, there was no worthwhile plot line, and the blood scenes are a little excessive, (one missed gun shot and a knife throw mereit a whole kitchen splattered with blood, really?). I mainly watch those for humor.
I agree with most see here that I recognize but I think Batman Begins and Dark Knight deserves merit, along with some of the other superhero movies (Spiderman 1 and Iron Man) and the first Pirates of Caribbean.
I also liked the simpsons movie, it was a good return to the classic humor of the 1990s, but thats just me

Inside Man gets immediately disqualified from any list I would make simply for using the laziest plot device EVAR:
Bad guy: a Nazi. Nevermind the current day setting or the fact that it has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. He’s a Nazi. HATE HIM PLEASE
I do truly love me some Training Day though. I think that movie will get over looked on best of decade lists, but I still think it is my favorite Denzel performance. Also you aren’t human if you aren’t cringing all through “Ever get your shit pushed in?” scene.

Didn't they reveal that early in the movie?
I guess maybe the specific Nazism wasn’t revealed, but we knew bad dude had a deep dark secret. You could just as easily substitute it with any other clunky “evil” plot device. Could have been child porn, or proof that he was murderer. Could have at least gone original and had him be associated with a different but less known historical genocide. Anything to avoid Nazism. Maybe Spike had never heard of Goodwin’s Law.
I don’t think I would have had quite this much disdain for Inside Man if it weren’t for all the rave reviews. Probably the same reason I think Slumdog is overrated tripe. (That and I think it had the worst message of all time: some people are destined for millions of dollars and true love, others are destined to be beggars with their eyes burned out… thanks, destiny!)
Heavily agreed on 25th Hour and When the Levees Broke though. Both worthy flicks.

Overrated
Just because a movie doesn’t have a big budget, slowly develops and is depressing doesn’t make it great. It was alright, but I just don’t get the hype myself.
I’d have preferred a documentary if I wanted to see what a washed up wrestler’s life looks like, if you’re not creating an interesting story or dialogue, might as well just show the real thing.
Maybe I just don’t “get it” on this one, but I saw it recently and was stunned it had gotten so much pub. It was so mediocre.

finally saw it over the weekend, damn, that was a great documentary! it was so easy to root for lips/anvil
although, at first, it was tempting to dismiss the metal fans as losers being in the wrong decade, etc. but anvil never compromised as artists and i respect that. lips and reiner are very likeable too. i wish them all the success they can garner from this documentary, perhaps it will win the oscar, i hope it does!
btw, if you were into punk indie music of the 80’s, and know of mike watt/the minutemen, see ‘we jam econo’. that band also had a great storyline. the producer/filmmakers didn’t have much experience at the time of making this, but i thought they did a great job weaving in all the different clips.

for someone who grew up listening to black flag, bb's, minor threat
i thought it was okay, they divided the genre up by region of the country. similar to we jam econo, it comprised of mostly interview clips, but wasn’t as effective as making it all flow together. it might be easier to pull off when your discussing one band, but for an entire genre it’s probably more difficult.

Hmmm maybe I am not quite using the term correctly
What I meant to say is that you cannot place that movie into a single genre… and that isn’t to say that is just two or three genres slapped together. The tone of the movie is just all over the place making it difficult to classify. But it does that without ever feeling like those tonal shifts are cheap. Just a really well put together film.

I saw the other version, I was a bit bored by it..
But obviously from my taste in film, I’m not really looking for art when I go to see a movie, just to be entertained. I’d rather just read the novel again if I was looking for that.
As it is with most novels, once you’ve read the book, and especially if you like it, the movie will have trouble living up to what you want it to be. Of course, if you dislike the leading actress, that probably doesn’t help either.

I want a combination of the best of the two P&P versions
Had just a few problems with the Firth one:
-Go back and count the number of time Austen directly wrote “Darcy smiled” it is certainly more than once. I get he was a solemn looking dude, but they took that to a bit of an extreme. The newer one was slightly better in this area (note: I am not saying the guy was better than Firth, he wasn’t)
-In the novel, Jane is hot. Hotter than Elizabeth. One of the hottest young ladies in the whole area. There are parts of dialogue in the novel and movie dedicated to talking about how hot she is. When you have an actress not attractive who is playing a character that is supposed to be hot, it takes the viewer out of the movie (see also: Knight, The Dark). The newer one took care of this one quite fantastically (Rosamund Pike = Yum)
And yes, I just did a breakdown on the differences between film versions of Pride and Prejudice on a baseball blog. Wanna fight about it??
ummm, no, but, uhhh, sooo, will you marry me and whatnot?

Best movies of this year (that I've seen)
A Serious Man
(500) days of summer
Inglorious Basterds
In the Loop
Up
Coraline
Where the Wild Things Are
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Duplicity
Zombieland
I saw hurt locker, and it was really good, but damn was this a great year for kids movies, and I haven’t even seen the princess and the frog yet. Plus i read some review of it by an iraq vet who hated it and it stained my enjoyment a bit. still a very good pic.

Seems everyone has a handle, so I'll just say that Crash was the worst movie of the decade.
Also, if anyone liked Slumdog Millionaire, do yourself a favor, set aside 4 hours and watch Lagaan. Think “Hoosiers the Musical” if Hoosiers was set in 19th century British India.
The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.
on Crash: when you consider the hype,
the fact it astonishingly won an Oscar (not to say they’re a barometer of good taste, but c’mon), and that it has some of the worst actors of their generation (Bullock, Phillippe, Fraser), they’re definitely two of the many hours I’d like to reconsider this decade. Slumdog is not quite as egregious, but definitely one of the most overrated of the decade as well.
it is the 6th worst reviewed oscar winning film in 80 odd years of the award

Speaking of "bad" movies
I just watched The Room, which is supposed to be the worst movie ever. Everyone seems so convinced that there is no way someone could piece together a movie this bad intentionally, and I am not saying I definitely believe it was, but I think it is a possibility at least. I keep going back and forth, because some stuff just seems too outrageously bad to not be intentional, but other stuff seems too subtlety bad to be planned.
Either way… watch the movie if you can. You will laugh… a lot… possibly get a headache afterward though

I watch a lot of horror movies
mostly as a result of the fact that my roommate loves them and he has Netflix. But I have seen it all, the extremely gory, the psychological thriller, the torture porn, and even some that push the envelope about as far as it will go (Cannibal Holocaust, Salo)…
None of those movies had me legitimately as creeped out as Zodiac. Probably mostly due to the knowledge going in that it was as faithful to the true events as possible. The stabbing scene was the worst by far.

I think my roommate just threw a bunch of his stuff on his Netflix queue
So I am sure I will soon enough. He was just on a Fulci kick, so I saw some of his work. Some of it was pretty dark. Nekromantik was another one I saw that stood out quite a bit.
i think argento was more popular / mainstream of the two
profondo rosso (deep red) is the best, but i also like susperia, and his first film (title escapes me). he collaborated with this band called goblin, who produced most of the scores for his movies.

Just for getting Salo into a baseball message board.
The stabbing scene is tough but for my money the creepiest scenes in the film are in the basement and the look between [blank] and [blank] in the hardware store at the end. Beyond creepy, it’s just one of the most devastatingly moving American movies in a long long time.
Yeah the basement scene was quite bone-chilling as well
especially considering you know logically nothing too awful could even really happen in that scene
I prefer The Straight Story by a shred
which missed being part of this decade by just as much.
That’s a 1-2 to put your money on.

I actually like it – inasmuch as it can be liked. I think much of it is overdone but the heavy-handedness of the ending got to me. The final images are quite lovely and can remain that way, if you want to take the whole thing as a joke that you’re willing to be part of the punchline to.

2 things:
1. Wet Hot American Summer was hilarious. I cannot believe I missed that. I didn’t even realize it was a Wain/Showalter thing. Thanks, Jim.
2. I completely neglected to include on my best albums of the decade list, the Yann Tiersen soundtrack to “Amelie.” I don’t think that should be overlooked just because it’s a soundtrack…it’s an original score, so it counts. And that album is one of my favorites of all time. Perfect for driving. Perfecter for driving on a sunny and brisk autumn day. :)

Compared to what came immediately before, the 2000's have actually been a pretty disappointing decade, movie-wise.
Seriously, here’s a proposed top 10 list of movies from 1999 (which, to be fair, was an unfuckingbelieveable year for movies) that, IMHE, tops any combined top-10 list that can be made of movies from the 2000’s
In no particular order:
1. Fight Club
2. Magnolia
3. Three Kings
4. Straight Story
5. Topsy Turvy
6. Thin Red Line
7. Being John Malkovich
8. The Insider
9. Election
10. Toy Story 2
This doesn’t even count the Oscar winner (American Beauty), the Matrix, Talented Mr. Ripley, Boys Don’t Cry, The Limey (which I have never seen), Sixth Sense, Blair Witch, etc.
That’s a good year for movies.

Nah, the Sixth Sense was pretty amazing when it first came out.
Considering the other popular horror movies at the time were Scream and I Know What you did… it was a breath of fresh air. But, after Unbreakable he just fell apart. Too bad his movies still bank like crazy and studios will greenlight whatever shitty ideas he comes up with.

the sixth sense is a thriller with a fantasy bent, and shouldn't be compared to teen horror/slasher flicks
and the first scream was damn good (if interpreted as a parody of earlier teen slasher flicks from the 80s). too bad they made a franchise out of it.
