Continuation of Best Of: TV Shows
I'm a fan of Alan Sepinwall, critic at the NJ Star-Ledger. Over at his bblogblog, he busted out a mammoth "best of" the 00s (aughts, double 0s?) in TV. It's been argued elsewhere that this decade will be remembered more for TV than for film, which I find pretty interesting. The 90s saw the rise of the sitcom (Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends, Raymond, Simpsons) and police procedural (Law&Order, Homicide, NYPD Blue). This decade was the surge in the serialized drama (Wire, Sopranos, Mad Men, Shield, Sons of Anarchy, Friday Night Lights, Lost). Despite the popularity of crappy reality TV, it was still a pretty amazing decade. Here's my top 5 dramas and comedies:
Favorite Dramas
1. The Wire 2. Lost 3. The Sopranos 4. Friday Night Lights 5. 24
Favorite Comedies
1. Arrested Development 2. Chappelle's Show 3. The Office 4. Curb Your Enthusiasm 5. The Daily Show
Post your favorites in the comments, along with any necessary mocking or racial insensitivity towards me.

in this order: the wire, the sopranos, the office (UK styles), the daily show, mad men
honorable mentions go to 24 and six feet under. i feel like hbo dominated this decade. that said, i’ve never seen an episode of arrested development and i followed one season of lost, and didn’t get into it.
i like that you mentioned chappelle, he deserves major props and the way comedy central treated him was a damn shame. the show stella replaced it, and my irrational hatred towards all affiliated with upright citizens brigade stems from that.

yeah Chapelle dominated TV for a while there.
It was must see tv for me, similar to In Living Color in the 90s.

I think you'd like Arrested Development, but I tell everyone that.
Those 2 seasons of Chappelle’s was amazing, better comedy hasn’t been produced (outside the Simpsons of course).

you mised a few:
30 Rock, Deadwood, Flight of the Conchords, History Detectives
Heroes started good, then crashed as the writers cocaine budget went up or something. Think Pirates:Global Warming.
Sons of Anarchy is a steaming pile of shit. Its terrible.

I feel like 30 Rock has slipped the past few seasons.
Season 1 and 2 was consistent brilliance, which I guess is hard to expect from a 30 min sitcom. Parks and Recreation has taken its spot for Thursday viewing.
Never watched Deadwood, 6 Feet Under, or Mad Men so I wouldn’t put them in my favorites list. Also, I loved Heroes season 1, but I’ve never seen a TV show crap on itself so badly. Oh well, at least there’s Chuck.

Don't watch much TV,
but “Six Feet Under” has to be near the top of the list. “West Wing” was fairly must-see for a couple of years, too. And “Sports Night” ended in 2000, so it technically barely makes the cut.
Chappelle was the best, though.
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
KenWo's tv picks of the 2000s
1. Curb Your Enthusiasm
2. The Sopranos
3. Entourage
4. Hells Kitchen
5. The Office
6. Las Vegas… (why did they end this show dammit i enjoyed it…of course I love vegas)
7. Hogan Knows Best :-)
8. Prison Break
9. Boston Legal
10. Eastbound and Down
Kenwo4life=ratings
Agree with Kenwo on Eastbound
I’d add Summer Heights High, even though there were only ~10 episodes. just got season 1 of deadwood, haven’t seen any of that yet. most of the good ones have already been covered… the first few seasons of nip/tuck were entertaining, but i dont think it makes the list of decade’s best. oh, and always sunny

I was the other one... it was pretty damn good by the time it got cancelled
but they just hung themselves from the get go by having everything start off so slow. Clancy Brown was amazing on there.

With Battlestar...
Did anyone else have this experience…
Seasons 1 and 2 are amazing… maybe this show will be an all-time favorite
Season 3 starts off great… slowly starts to run out of steam… but maybe it will tie up well in the finale
Hmmm… well the twists in that finale seem a bit absurd and certainly feel retcon-ed… but maybe they will explain it next season
Season 4 is sort of struggling and it seems pretty clear at this point that the writers didn’t have any answers planned when they presented a lot of these mysteries… but maybe the series finale will cleverly answer all my questions in a satisfying manner
SPOILER - Season finale presents the following answers: God exists and he did everything… ugh… so now we have to ask ourselves… how far back does this cop-out ending taint the show? Just season 4? Season 3 as well? The whole series? The more time that passes since the end of the series, the more I look at the whole thing as tarnished. Huge disappointment.
mild-disagreement...
when you consider how this could have ended:
a- cylons win!
b- humans win!
c- It was all a dream! (dallas style)
d- deus ex machina (which is sort of what it was)
e- goes on forever without knowing outcome (sopranos style)
I am not dissappointed. It wasn’t my show, and the writers put forth something that made me think, and rock out to “all along the watchtower”. Could it have been better? sure, but I was just along for the ride, and nothing this past decade gave me a better trip. The post 9/11 parallels, papers without corners, phones with cords, and supremely excellent re-imagining was just fantastic, and I am not going to quibble. It was no Seinfield ending, which left me cold, cheated and bitter.
There's Your Zagnut!!!
by DrEmilioLizardo on Dec 14, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions
Well, you can do your "e" option a few different ways
There is the Sopranos way… which is to intentionally infuriate your fan base with a non-ending
Or there is the way they did it on the Wire… where it doesn’t have to completely tie up all the story lines, but it still comes to a logical stopping point for the story they wanted to tell.
The problem with the second option on this show is that they kept building up the mythology and spiritual aspects of the show in the last two seasons so they had to give these big what’s-it-all-mean type answers. The problem with that of course is that these are writers on a fiction show. And while it is a well written show, I am not convinced that those writers have answers to those type of heavy questions any more satisfying than the horseshit shoveled to me by my pastor in confirmation class. Thus my disappointment.
And you bring up a great point. The show was at its best when it was using real-life parallels. Like the 9/11 stuff, and the occupation in Iraq (with the script flipped a bit) and even the religious stuff was great, when they were comparing it to topics we see in real-life: faith vs non-faith, cult worship, similarities among warring religions. However the problem again came from the fact they painted themselves into a corner and they had to start giving answers to those religious questions which have no comparative answer in real-life (unless Jesus Christ has made the return trip and nobody decided to tell me about it)
Most covered but this is what I went with
House
Rome
Life (cancelled too soon)
Flight of the Conchords (although the stand up is better)
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
The Office
The Big Bang Theory
Parks and Recreation (which has really hit it’s stride, I was afraid it might get cancelled at first)
30 Rock
More recently, I like Modern Family (has no one else mentioned this?), Bored to Death, The League, and Community this year.

I share your disdain for the show, but for a different reason-
Larry David=George Costanza. Now, I liked Seinfeld, until the last episode when they made the entire audience who watched out to be booger-eaters. George was a part of an ensemble. Much like garlic adds flavor to a dish, but would never be the entire dish itself, a Larry David show is just… pure garlic- harsh, overpowering and unpleasant.

There are some shows that had fantastic 1st seasons but flamed in one way another like
Heroes (The worst 2nd season EVER)

Rome (Just waned a little at the 1/2 point of season 2. I think they rushed too much history, too fast)
Oh and I do like Sons of Anarchy. Don’t know why you think its so terrible Gus.

I think when they realized they couldn’t afford season 3, they wanted to get as much in as they could. Was squeezed, but I still thought it was a great show.
I hope they continue to do period pieces like that or the John Adams mini-series. Plenty to work with in Europe / Middle age / Renaissance that could make for a great show.

bullshit
I saw enough interviews with Chappelle and more importantly the other actors to see that he was flat out afraid of failing. Sometimes people do something so great that they feel like they can’t continue at that level and they come up with excuses as to why it didn’t work out. There were plenty of executives who called Dave on it. “We gave him $50 million, why would we want to fuck that up?”

“Celebrity in our culture”. As opposed to Rhodesian culture? Fer chrissakes, colin, quit with the rich guilt already. Perhaps he could’ve done the show for free, or decided to just do it on the Internet. Then maybe he would’ve had peace.
Oh, and what is it that stand-up comedians do? They…STAND UP in front of strangers and take risk. And demand “LOOK AT ME!!!”.
Our culture. Keehrist, that is rich.

I watched it, too.
Yeah, those clips from “Half-Baked” were right up there with “Citizen Kane”. WTF was he even doing on TAS? If you don’t want the spoils of success, don’t seek it. Jon Stewart seems to have done a decent job of accepting the accolades/piles of cash, and TDS was no big deal before he arrived.
And to think CC signs people to shows to fail, or even be mediocre, is a ludicrous thought. That’s the game. Every stand-up guy wants his own show, the record, the movie, etc. Quit being enabling of Chappelle’s flame-out. I’m with Tdogg – he was very disappointing.

he was only paid for what he delivered, right?
i’m not endorsing osfib’s argument that it was CC’s fault, btw. why would they strangle the golden egg?

also:
fame is oftentimes destructive or repressive in the States. probably elsewhere too. i could see someone blanching in the face of that. i’m not tied to the “our culture” phrasing.
i meant what i said: getting a show on comedy central is out of the way relative to the movies or network shows. he got fame to a degree he didn’t expect. it’s not like he was unexperienced in show business.
that said, i’m pretty sure the biggest reason is that he didn’t like how much work the show was compared to the quality of the output. since there are at least a few people who like his stand up more than the show, that’s not indefensible. i’m one of them, so i’m a fan of his choices.
as you said, he’s not a bad person. he’ll be back doing other stuff. i prefer his stand-up to his show. dave feels the same way.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing. - Trooper
I bet the sheer volume of stuff he was expected to churn out
was a bit daunting. A stand-up routine is 5 minutes and can last a long time from a “freshness” standpoint. 22 minutes/week is tough. And, of course, control is a huge issue.
When I saw him with Lipton I figured he had jumped the shark. I can still be disappointed that no new “Show” is being churned out, though at least he quit on top. Jim Brown would agree.

You should check out the show Iconoclasts
There’s an episode of Chappelle and Maya Angelou interviewing each other, and he goes into a lot of detail. Obviously he’s only going to show his side of the story, and the sense that I got from it is: (a) he realized that the network and a majority of the audience weren’t getting the jokes and he was being seen as a minstrel show, and (b) the pressures to succeed on a commercial level completely overwhelmed the pressures to succeed in being funny and good at what he does.
Maybe (b) is what you’re saying, but I think that (a) was the bigger issue there, and I totally respect that.

in addition to iconoclasts, the interview from inside the actors studio
of course it’s one sided, but to simply say that chappelle was scared shitless (to tdogg), it’s a cheap comment.

I know I went to his show post - getting huge..
And I’d have quit too. He couldn’t finish one joke w/o some obnoxious douche yelling out “Yeah!!” “I’m Rick James Bitch!”..
I can’t imagine he was having too much fun, you could see the frustration on his face. He looked pretty miserable already at that point, and he hadn’t even quit the show yet.

Well, welcome to fame.
Akin to the “Brady” kids, or “Radar O’Reilly”, or any other “icon” who has a great hook that has caught on and gets typecast. Be careful what you wish for.
And in relation to the “majority of his audience not getting” the jokes, I’d have to disagree. Sounds like he equated “crossover” with “selling out” and perhaps never intended his “pale” audience to embrace his stuff as much as they (we) did. I’m sure he never wanted to play to his audience and instead wanted to do things that were amusing to him. As any artist should do.
He could’ve screened his live audience better, closed the set, whatever to deal with the rude audience behavior. He couldn’t cope. He’s not a bad person but it was nonetheless disappointing because he’s a funny guy.
I thought it was OK for everyone to laugh at stereotypes, no matter who was being stereotyped. When I think of Chappelle, I certainly don’t think “Mammy”.

the issue was not about the show getting huge and dealing with fame
CC was having much more influence on creativity, and dave chapelle said fuck that. i’ve got no problem with him leaving the money to preserve what was left of artistic freedom. he should be commended.

he did go to africa, but CC/Viacom were pushing the mental breakdown/crack use rumors.
anyway, i agree with what you wrote to colin above.

Did you ever watch the 'lost episodes'
I don’t remember the exact sketch, but there was one with something like ‘racial fairies’ or something like that. Apparently it’s THE sketch that made him quit.
It’s actually really sad to see… Like a self-parody of what he had done before. The early seasons are all about mocking the idea of stereotypes (which was his point), but it really quickly devolved into exploiting them for cheap laughs.
There’s a major difference between the two, and I think it’s remarkable that he stuck to his guns on that point and just said “fuck it”.

Again this is soft.
Im not saying this doesn’t happen. But to say its to the point of frustration that you are miserable? Cmon. A skilled standup/comedian should be able to handle this? The perfect example is Eddie Murphy. I can remember him telling stories of how he handled audiences who tried to intrude on his act by yelling at him on the Buckwheat, Gumby and Mr Robinson characters.
Or handle it like Charlie Murphy did in his show I say last year. Discuss it crack some jokes on it and then move on.
"Oh well back to work"
"I don't come to your job and knock the d*** out of your mouth"
is a famous stand-up audience put-down, right? Use it, or something more clever. Toughen up.

Wow folks
Sorry I hadnt checked back and saw the additional comments (Chappelle does that). Im sorry friends.I have seen all the interviews and specials surronding him. Its not a cheap comment. Its easy to accept some of his views after he had time to clean it up. I say I’m mad, but yes disappointed is better. Im not giving CC “too” much credit. They wouldn’t have paid that kind of cash with the thought they would step in and muck things up. Find some of the other actor interviews. I remember one where Charlie Murphy implied Dave started to create enemies in his on mind. Anybody who watched the saw knows its hogwash to imply folks were pushing him to “sell out” and become a joke. Those critics existed (especially in the black community) FROM THE BEGINNING. Geez one of his first skits was on a blind black racist (sheer genius by the way.)
Onlysox he was scared. To say he didn’t like the quality or things like that kind of denies what is, a damn comedian! Jokes flop. Skits flop. Dave knows that. I do think it is somewhat fair to acknowledge that he probably never dreamed it would get to the level it did but you’ll telling me that is not what he was aspiring to?

Seriously. I used to be a big fan. I watched a few of the "new" episodes when it came back on, and there was suddenly one moment of the show that ruined it all for me (I still like old episodes though)... and I haven't watched since.

South Park kind of destroyed it for me.
Hard not to think about the SP episode anytime I see it now, kills the jokes for me.

that show is funny. and for now i'm still a big fan.
i could see it getting like south park (a little played out), which i don’t watch anymore, but until then i’ll be watching and laughing.
Cashing checks and having sex.
i went back and rewatched a bunch of early episodes
and they were pretty good. but they don’t hold up nearly as well as south park. scott tenorman, for one, is way beyond anything family guy could ever do.

YouTube is perfect for Family Guy, just watch 10 minutes of the throwaway gags and you remember the show can still be funny.
A shame they still have to throw together 15 minutes of pointless plot every week.

i'd say for some of us, the throwaway gags are like a blast from the past.
i was just watching recently and they had bill clinton playing the theme from night court on the sax. to me, that’s a hilarious reference because i watched that show as a kid. same thing with all the other 80s sitcom and cartoon references. those are some of my first TV memories so i think it’s funny to be reminded of them.
if i were 10 years younger or 10 years older, i doubt those jokes would have the same effect on me. case in point, i loved the transformers jokes (optimus prime is a jew?!), but if they made that a might morphin power rangers joke i prolly wouldn’t get it. i think the show is very age specific.

I think they pull from a lot of generational situations,
but overall I’d agree with you – it’s a reflection of the perception/experience of the writers.

Watching Wet Hot American Summer reminded me (even though osfib expressed his distaste for this show) that I really dug on Stella for the short time it aired.
Michael Ian Black could take a dump on screen and I’d think it was comedy.
Wait, that’s a bad example since I like poop humor anyway….
ummmmmm….
Michael Ian Black could fuck a guy in the ass on screen and I’d think it was comedy.
Wait, he did that in WHAS….
Point is, I like him, as well as D. Wain and M. Showalter.
It was no Chappelle, but Stella was hysterical in itself.
