Pierre will cost the White Sox $3 million in ‘10 and $5 milllion in ’11, with the Dodgers picking up the remaining $10.5 million of his $18.5 million.

Dodgers are cutting money

Owners divorce situation, along with the fact he doesn’t have a spot on their roster, and the fact he is overpaid. The Sox won’t have to give up much, this is a salary dump as much as anything for the Dodgers.

Pierre, Rios, Q, Jones for four spots, shouldn’t be much of an issue. We had a hole to fill.

depends

Pierre was actually good in a sss for left last year. Of course his arm is shit but I hated Pods in the outfield period. If in shape Jones plays, its actually a nice late inning defense.

"Oh well back to work"

by Tdogg on Dec 15, 2009 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

That is true

With Pierre, (hopefully) a sub 400lb Jones and Rios in the late innings, they will be catching everything hit past the dirt.

by coffeepac on Dec 15, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

I'd say 2009.

It matches up more with his previous work and his numbers took a hit from playing LF. I’ll give him a mulligan on LF that year as it was his first year in left. It is an easier position, but it is a new position. I remember some drama that year surrounding him and Kemp and who got to play CF.

by coffeepac on Dec 15, 2009 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

He's an above average LF. Rios is an good CF.

Remains to be seen what Q! can do in RF, but it can’t be as bad as JD. Definitely a boost to OF defense.

They are out of money to pay anyone else. Acquiring a DH via FA or trade would require shedding salary.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 15, 2009 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

Two things

a.) How do you know they’re “out of money”? I thought the same thing before the Pierre deal and then they added another $3 million.

b.) All of the above will likely cost no more than $5 million each. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that the base salary of all three is lower than that.

by CWSKeith on Dec 15, 2009 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly..

These guys aren’t looking for 15 or even 10 million. I find it hard to believe if Jones doesn’t look good, they can’t find another 3 – 5 million for a one year contract for one of these guys.

by Grinder in Training on Dec 15, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

They will be close to $100M in the end now and I read that payroll this season was goibg to be $95M

Here’s the link

They may have to shed a salary just to afford Juan Pierre. I don’t think they can spend $5M on a DH.

Moreover each of the guys you list cannot play the field. And for some reason, the Sox are focused on getting a DH that can. I don’t think any of those guys end up on the Sox.

by BuehrleMan on Dec 15, 2009 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

Not saying you...

Plenty of people do though, and those are the people you are referring to who have given him grief. Players (unfairly sometimes) get held to the standard that is set by the amount they are paid. Fans expect the production the contract warrants.

Doesn’t make it right, but there are plenty of people out there that do this. If Pierre was making 4 million the last couple years people would have talked about him more positively. Just b/c you don’t fall into that group doesn’t make it not true.

by Grinder in Training on Dec 15, 2009 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

i know what you're saying.

i’m just saying it’s my perception that, regardless of his contract, he seems to have been criticized a lot.

like a lot of players, he is good at some things and not good at others. he is also terrible at some things and great at some things.

and some things he is average at. i think that covers it.

the suck is not just a river in ireland.

I could care less what side of homeplate he stands on to hit. I think considering the low price of some of these DH’s, he’d have to show something in spring training to keep that job. It’ll work out either way. There will be guys available if he isn’t up to the task at low prices.

Did someone link this stupidity yet?
KW seems to be hell-bent on decimating his farm system to try and just be competitive, which is another problem of his: he thinks his team is a LOT better than it is. Its perfectly sensible for a team who is a legit contender, such as the Phillies, to raid the farm to try and get someone like Lee, or even potentially Halladay. They are a great team already and need to make moves to become the best. The White Sox are basically the same boat as Houston, but with marginally better players. Both the Astros and White Sox really need to tear down everything and rebuild, but they wont out of some absurd notion that they might have a chance at the playoffs. A smart GM like Billy Beane sees his farm looking very poor after a lot of success and goes the rebuild route, KW and Ed Wade cannot see the forest from the trees and still live in 2005.

I knew KW was lacking intelligence when he put the World Series win on the shoulders of Scott Posednik, instead of his pitching staff which featured career years from every single pitcher on it. It was the pitching that won the it for Chicago, not its offense. KW never stopped praising his "grinders" which was infuriating to see. Him taking on the Rios contract was another giant blunder too, Peavy was an unnecessary acquisition as well, they had pretty good pitching to begin with.

Im not putting him in with Sabean, Wade or Moore yet, but Kenny Williams is certainly on the tier immediately under those guys, along with Omar Minaya.

Did KW really

“put the World Series win on the shoulders of Scott Posednik [sic], instead of his pitching staff”? I don’t recall this.

I do agree that said staff “featured career years from every single pitcher on it” in ’05 and that had a lot to do with the championship.

The rest of this is horseshit, particularly the assertion that KW “decimates his farm system”.

I’m okay with the Pierre-for-low-cost-and-no-prospects-worth-mentioning despite the pus arm.

I agree with him

This team is no where near being a legitimate contender. Trading away young, cheap mediocre players for slightly less mediocre, old, more expensive players is ridiculous at this point.

Starting pitching in 2010 good enough to go deep in playoffs
Experienced major league defense and offensive flexibility will be key

What's wrong with vb?

Its ease of use and wonderful ‘on error, resume next’ flooded the market with substandard programmers and substandard code.

My biggest issue

is that I would rather have the cash spent on Teahan, Vizquel and Pierre spent on one impact player than those players

by joewho112 on Dec 15, 2009 12:11 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I think that's a great point.

I’ll take Matsui as DH over those 3 guys for 2010. I think buying up a bucnh of bad players instead of one good player is clearly a mistake.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 15, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Sort of agree

…on Teahan.

I think Vizquel provides nifty IF depth and + defense. And Pierre == Pods with better defense.

by NorthSidePaulie on Dec 15, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Here's a comparison

Matsui, Jones and Getz starting with Nix on the bench versus Pierre, Jones, and Teahen with Omar on the bench. I’ll take the first option.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 15, 2009 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

Getz and Pierre roughly a wash

Like the actuals and intangibles of Omar on the bench, I (unlike some) won’t miss Nix all that much.

And I already conceded that Teahan doesn’t excite me (although he’s back-loaded so isn’t $costly in 2010).

I don't think they could have afforded both

or either, even without the money spent on the players mentioned. You’re acting like these players and the DH-less regime have no positives.

by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 15, 2009 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

It looks like he may still be capable of playing some CF....

just looking for positives…..unless the little he played last year(and pretty badly) is an indication he’s lost it in a hurry. Probably not.

Well....

it would be comforting if you could reasonably play him in center occasionally or more……christ, you’d think that had to play SOME part in deciding to actually acquire him. It certainly fucking should.

yea the guy complainting about DSL, Sweeney and Gio

It sucked giving Swisher away for nothing, but “losing out” on Sweeney, DSL and Gio isn’t exactly franchise crippling.

In fact, Oakland will probably end up giving away Swisher for a 4th outfielder, a guy that never makes it to the bigs because of injuries, and a guy that might one day be a competent 4th or 5th starter for cheap.

Not exactly a great haul for the great Billy Beane either.

From SBN's Dodger site:

During his time with the Dodgers, Juan Pierre has been a good Dodger if not the most productive one. For one month he gave us the unforeseen Beast Mode but most of the time he did exactly what he’d always done. He played hard, he stole bases, he ran the bases extremely well, was rarely hurt, hit for some average, didn’t get on base at a very high clip, didn’t have much of an arm, didn’t play center field very well given his speed. He was exactly as advertised, the only problem with that is that he was paid much to much for what he did.

His value has always been right about 1/2 of the contract the Dodgers gave him. The Dodgers will continue to pay for that mistake this year and next but the White Sox will be getting a fairly valued Left Fielder.

I wish Juan Pierre nothing but good will as he can now begin his quest again for 2,000 hits. \

rotoworld....i sure hope not
White Sox acquired outfielder Juan Pierre from the Dodgers for two players to be named later.

Pierre will play center field for the White Sox in 2010 and should bat near the top of their OBP-deficient lineup. He hit a respectable .308/.365/.392 this past season with 16 doubles, eight triples, 30 stolen bases and 31 RBI in 380 at-bats and has typically played solid defense.
