I really think that Toby Hall should be the first baseman

But i guess he only played there for one game, in spring training, and hurt his shoulder, and never healed.

that’s one hell of a bad game at first

In the name of starting debate

I advocate trading Buerhle and Jenks for an impact bat or for a load of prospects and using the salary relief to get Holliday.

I know proposing trades is a bit Blog-A-Bull, but what else are you supposed to do in the dregs of winter?

Boras probably makes MH unsignable by the Sox

But I was wondering how much he’ll get and how long? How much more than Konerko per year? 5 or 6 million? Would you take on an extra 5 million for a year if you could essentially dump Konerko to LAA or AZ (both of whick PK would approve)? Now consider what Jenks will get in arbitration. You could move a few pieces and see Holliday at first and have a smaller payroll.

Will never happen though. That Rios deal has Reinsdorf wary of loading up on long term deals until he proves he’s somewhat deserving of that money and Holliday’s stint with the A’s doesn’t instill confidence.

by Duck99 on Dec 17, 2009 4:46 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Konerko is at $12

No one would take him without the Sox picking up a big part. Buerhle is still worth his contract, therfore he is movable.

by joewho112 on Dec 17, 2009 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

no! hes not movable,

The Angels are getting a lot of heat for

losing Figgins and Lackey. I could see them taking a shot at Konerko at full price for one year. They draw 3 million per year and have dumped a bunch of salary this off season. Off the top of my head I think Matthews Jr is their only bad contract at this point.

Holliday at first and then the Gentleman Masher comes back for 1 year at $4 million. That would look a lot better than the current projected lineup which is going to need about 4 career years to put up enough runs to contend.

by Duck99 on Dec 17, 2009 5:05 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Moreno's honeymoon with the Angel fans

Is over. I really thought they would be players for Halladay. I live in SoCal and between the Angels letting everyone leave and the Dodgers salary dump (the divorce of the McCourts yields at least 1 hilarious story per week) the natives are getting very restless. They still send 6 million+ through the gates next year.

A better idea than Holliday would be Adrian Gonzales. I’d be in favor of moving just about any prospect package that doesn’t include Flowers or Hudson for him. Heath Bell is also on the trading block for the Pads and he’d be cheaper and probably better than Jenks. Like LA they are in a divore-lead salary dump.

by Duck99 on Dec 17, 2009 6:25 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

i think we've had this conversation. i'm in santa ana and i think you were either irvine or somewhere in LA?

regardless, i agree that the honeymoon’s over. between that and the aforementioned divorce sagas, this has sure been a fun offseason for poking fun at the local baseball fans. my nelson muntz impression gets better every day.

These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

He has two years left at below market price

It would take a whole lot more than 3 B- level prospects to pry him away. They are the Red Sox for Buckholtz and Ellsbury. You’d have to give them Beckham and Hudson to get him

teams like the padres do not usually trade for players owed millions who haven't played above AA.

and, even setting aside the cash, you must be joking. you don’t trade adrian gonzalez for three players who aren’t even close to being elite.

When they could sign Holliday for much better production or even settle for Vlad for much less and get similar production.

I was wondering where BA fit in and does

Have a spot on this team based on his huge upside. I remember Peter King of SI marveling in a MMQB article in 2006 about how easily BA hit 450 foot bombs in batting practice. Called him the next big thing. No wonder he’s a football writer and he also picked the Bears to win the Super Bowl this year so he’s bad at football predictions as well.

BA was good in the AJ fight vs the Cubs so he could be the team goon.

I was thinking the opposite, especially with all the available second basemen

wouldn’t the Sox be better off (albeit marginally so) if they’d’ve not made the Teahen deal and instead signed Kelly Johnson, Orlando Hudson or Felipe Lopez for second (thus keeping Beckham at third)? The Sox are quite clearly banking on (a) Teahen playing a better third-base now that he’s focused on one position and (b) because of that ease of not having to move around the diamond, his bat coming closer to his one real good year.

by CWSKeith on Dec 17, 2009 5:46 PM CST up reply actions

I like teahen over hudson and johnson straight up. I like Lopez but he's older, less versatile and will be more expensive.

I may be overrating teahen but I like him and always have. I really think he will have a great year in our park and in our lineup.

Jay Jaffe: It’s a difficult comparison to make between a team sport and an individual one, but the players you mention have been about as good at what they do as Tiger has at what he does (the golfing, not the skirt-chasing), and with the exception of Santana, “greatest ever at _” tags are within their grasp as well.
