Do It Yourself Hall of Fame Voting!

First off, a big thank you to Stacey over at Camden Chat for inadvertently teaching me how to make this.  It's winter, meaning the BWAA gets to anger the masses with their HoF votes (Jim Rice is in but Blyleven isn't?).  All 26 players eligible for enshrinement this year are listed, and you can vote for up to ten of them.  If you think no one is deserving, please submit a ballot with no one selected.  Next Wednesday I'll post the results and any player who cracks the 75% threshold will be inducted into the SSS HoF.  Here's the ballot, and thanks for participating.

And feel free to say who you voted for in the comments.

I used 10 votes....

because I don’t believe in this first ballot… or wait 15 years or the veterans committee….. there were 10 names I feel are Hall of Fame worthy.

1. Roberto Alomar
2. Barry Larkin
3. Mark McGwire
4. Harold Baines
5. Alan Trammell
6. Tim Raines
7. Jack Morris
8. Fred McGriff
9. Lee Smith
10. Andre Dawson

All of these guys were the best at their positions in their era and all should be HOF’ers. I have decided this year that Mcgwire should be in and steroids should not be a factor in judging the players from the 80s-90s. It is what it is…there was a substantial amount of pitchers on the juice too… so the playing field was somewhat balanced anyway.

Nice thread

Baines, Raines, Trammell, Martinez, Morris, Blyleven, Dawson, McGwire, Alomar, and Lee Smith. My standards are lower because I run under the assumption that most people won’t vote for X, Y, Z slightly worse player for stupid reasons like why Rickey Henderson can’t be unanimous, and God once said he’d put 10 names on his ballot every year. Morris and Lee Smith just to set precedents lower than 300 wins/3000 K’s for pitchers, because very few starting pitchers get into the hall. Few relievers are going to get elected other than Lee Smith, but I don’t want him to get buried in the legend of Mariano/Hoffman.

Barry Larkin looked at me funny one time when I was watching mlb.com, fuck that douche.

Jack Morris was the ACE of 3 world series championship staffs… plus he pitched lights out in those series…. Blyleven had a nice body of work, but he was never considered THE MAN of any era that he pitched in. He was never in the top echelon of pitchers….. I don’t mind if Blyleven gets in- but Morris gets in first.

I'm not really a HoF person, but does Morris have anything even close to as good a peak as Blyleven's 1973-'74 seasons?

or, if you want to extend it further, take a look at how good BB was from 1971-1978. I can’t say I know a whole lot about that era but it’d be tough for me to think there were too many pitchers better over that time span.

by CWSKeith on Dec 2, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

Blyleven is right on the border line with me

Those were great years for him, and he had a good career…but nothing spectacular. He never finished above 3rd in the Cy Young voting….that doesn’t help HOF induction, in my opinion.

there were many pitchers much better than him during his peak years and that's his problem with getting in.

Gibson, Seaver, Carlton, Hunter, Jenkins, Perry, Palmer, Guidry………these were the dominant pitchers in that era. Blyleven was very good and pretty consistent but he was not in this class.

Sutton is an excellent comparison.

He benefited from playing on very good Dodger teams and racking up 324 wins. 300 is one of those “magic numbers” that the baseball writers have used forever for a hall of fame career. If BB had 13 more wins, he’d be in by now and I would still be arguing he does not belong.

Since 1900, Bert Blyleven ranks 5th in career strikeouts, 8th in shutouts, and 17th in wins.

There are only eight pitchers who rank in the top 20 in wins, shutouts, and strikeouts. Here is the list:

                     Wins SO SHO
Bert Blyleven 17th 5th 8th
Steve Carlton 6th 4th 13th
Ferguson Jenkins 19th 11th 17th
Walter Johnson 1st 9th 1st
Gaylord Perry 12th 8th 14th
Nolan Ryan 8th 1st 6th
Tom Seaver 13th 6th 6th
Don Sutton 8th 7th 9th

I understand all of those numbers and their significance on all-time lists.

All of those numbers have as much to do with longevity as they do with dominating performance. The man played 22 seasons and was named to 2 all star games. Only four times in 22 years was he considered for a cy young award and never finished better than 3rd. He struck out 6.7 batters per 9 inning over those 22 years. Very impressive stats and he is likely to get in the hall this year. I just wouldn’t vote for him……….

From the link I provided:

With respect to winning the Cy Young Award, when did that become a requirement for membership? If it is, then I guess we’d better let Jim Bunning, Juan Marichal, Phil Niekro, Nolan Ryan, and Don Sutton know about these rules.

As far as not placing in the top ten often enough, Blyleven had two more such rankings than Bunning and Marichal combined. He also had three more than Don Drysdale and the same number as Bob Gibson and Jim Hunter. He had one fewer than Niekro and Sutton.

Now let’s take a look to see how many Cy Youngs and top ten finishes Blyleven should have garnered.

More there, season by season.

Raines and Blyleven just miss the cut for me. Not big on relievers in the HOF, so Smith won’t get my vote. When Rivera and Hoffman get eligible, they get my vote…but can’t do it with Smith. He’s better known for blowing big save opportunities (Game 2 of the ’96 Series, Game 163 in 2007) than finishing them. If a guy makes his living entering games with the bases empty and throwing only one inning, he better come up big when it counts.

Blyleven was very good, yes, but not a HOF'er

“Strikeouts are facist”

He never won the Cy Young, and in fact only got Cy Young Votes in 4 of his 22 seasons. Finishing no higher than 3rd in the league. So basically, less than 20% of the time during his career he wasn’t even listed in the top 10 pitchers in the league. He never won an ERA title. He won 20-games once in his 22-year career and during the majority of his career that was done with a 4-man rotation.

Sorry, he had longevity and some solid years, but not HOF numbers.

The 23-year-old right-hander may have been the best pitcher in the A.L. in 1973, yet he finished seventh in the Cy Young voting. Heck, Bert might have been the best pitcher in all of baseball that year. He led the A.L. in K/BB (3.85), SHO (9), ERA+ (158), and — for “cybergeeks” like me — neutral wins* (26); was 2nd in ERA (2.52), K (258), WHIP (1.12), and RSAA (53); 3rd in CG (25); 4th in IP (325); and 7th in W (20).

*a projection of the number of wins the pitcher would have been credited with if he was given average run support.

Blyleven’s seventh-place finish was the result of netting — get this — one point. Yes, that’s right. One voter out of 24 saw fit to pencil Bert’s name into the third slot on the ballot. The other 23 writers ignored him completely. Instead, they voted for Jim Palmer #1, Ryan #2, Hunter (and his 3.34 ERA in a pitcher’s ballpark) #3, John Hiller #4, Wood #5, and Jim Colborn #6.

This is a good time to stop and reflect for a moment. Just because Blyleven was treated unfairly back then, should the voters continue to overlook him today when it comes to the Hall of Fame? Convicted felons have served less time than The Dutchman.

OK, maybe that was an anomaly, right? Nope, I wish I could say it was but, unfortunately, that’s not the case. I’m here to report that Bert didn’t receive a single vote for the Cy Young for the next 10 years (1974-1983). Is it possible that he failed to put up numbers worthy of such acclaim? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Let’s take a peek at how Blyleven fared the following year. I mean, I don’t want to be accused of just cherry picking his best years.

I am having a very hard time understanding how you could ever use

things like votes for Cy Young when you routinely see sportwriters jack up the vote. The 1973 example is the perfect illustration of this. All this is further proof that the hall needs to broaden the vote and let a few more enlightened folks add to the mix.

I also don’t understand your argument x y z were better in his era. So what. They were all worthy. To a certain degree the hall is set and I generally dislike folks trying to go backwards. Bert absolutely destroys a few of the pitchers who “are” in.

Last pitching with longevity at a high rate, is a great subjective quality that adds to a applicant’s total, not subtracts.

We are not talking about just "one" person these guys are better than

and as I said Bert absolutely destroys a few of them. Sure you can use the slippery slope argument but which is worse? Trying to justify how x number of players are in but I’m better than them and I’m not?

Im sorry I just don’t get the fence argument with him. By almost all metrics he ranks with the greats for induction. No one is saying he is inner circle but this is a blatant ommission.

I’ll get into Raines later, he should be in also but I see clearer cases either way.

In naming other players from his era, I was just pointing out those pitchers who I felt were more dominating.

I’ve said over and over what a good pitcher he was. I, like the writers who are judging him just feel he was a bit short of hall of fame credentials. While watching him play, I never considered him one of the elite pitchers of that era.
As far as bringing up Cy Young voting, I believe it is absolutely valid. As I said before, the writers voting for that award are the same writers voting for the hall. You can argue that they don’t know what they are voting for but they get to decide.

Alomar, Raines, Larkin, Blyleven, Mcgwire

Blyleven not being in at this point is stupid. And Bhoov where is Raines man?

Yeah

he’s the one guy who is right on my borderline. He’s better than Jim Rice, but then I don’t think Rice should be in. Raines is the kind of guy that I could change my mind about.

there shouldn't be changing your mind about anyone

either you think he is or isnt. Tim Raines career has been over for quite a long while now. Was he a HOF’er or not???? I say he was. Either way- Shit or get off the pot.

the fact that nobody gets 100 percent is ridiculous. the fact that jim rice retired when i was 9… yet went into the hall of fame when i was 29 is ridiculous. i get riled up over this topic.

Hey that's life,

opinions change. At one time (I think when I was 12 or 13) I used to think Jack Morris was a great pitcher simply because he pitched one great game. Then I got older, looked up the other 561 games he pitched in and realized that he had a career ERA only about 5% better than average. Then my opinion of him changed.

Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.

Jack Morris
World Series: 2.96 ERA, 1.200 WHIP
BB
World Series: 2.35 ERA, 1.130 WHIP

Jack Morris
ALCS: 4.87 ERA, 1.303 WHIP
BB
AL/NLCS: 2.58 ERA, 1.027 WHIP

Jack Morris
Playoffs total: 3.80 ERA, 1.245 WHIP

Unless you were referring to his pitching to the score nonsense

Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars. Now he has a hole in one.

• What’s the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards.

• Tiger Woods wasn’t seriously injured in the crash, but he’s still below par.

• What were Tiger Woods and his wife doing out at 2.30 in the morning? They went clubbing.

• Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn’t decide between a wood and an iron. Perhaps Tiger should be using a driver?

• This is the first time Tiger’s ever failed to drive 300 yards.

• Apparently, Tiger admitted this crash was the closest shave he’s ever had. So Gillette has dropped his contract.

• After a wayward drive, Tiger Woods found water before nestling behind a tree.

• Apparently, the only person who can beat Tiger Woods with a golf club is his wife.
