Bell sums up Viciedo's season at Class AA Birmingham as "great'' even though some scouts considered him overweight and at times overmatched by breaking pitches. He hit .280 with 12 homers and drew only 19 unintentional walks in a full season, maintaining an ultra-aggressive approach even amid slumps.

"One of our biggest concerns with him was the culture," Bell said. "The kid turned out to be maybe the best teammate we had at Birmingham ... He's a great kid."

Bell compares the 20-year-old Viciedo to the Angels' Kendry Morales, a more experienced Cuban who needed 309 games in the minor leagues before establishing himself as a big-leaguer. "He'll figure it out," Bell said of Viciedo. "He's so strong. He's going to be a good big-league hitter."

If it wasn't for his contract, I'd look at these

quotes as classic Sox pump and dump.

That being said, what do you think of his comparison to Morales? (larry)

I am not overly concerned with the low walk total for a possible CI or DH.

even allowing for the inflated hitting environment morales was in, his minor league numbers are far superior. morales, of course, was older when he played at those level. i guess if you’re saying viciedo has the potential to be a cuban first baseman with a low walk rate and good power, it makes sense.

by larry on Dec 4, 2009 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

TY

From what I’ve heard, he hasn’t grasped 3B and it looks more and more that he might be better suited for 1B.

Therefore, I think it is important for Flowers to try and continue his development at C…which I think he handled pretty well last year. Going into the year all I heard were doubts on his fielding and he probably would project out as a 1B, DH – but it seems he might be okay behind the plate.

there's also the concern about flowers' injury history.

he made it through the season without any issues but knee problems are not good for the long-term prospects of a catcher.

Switching to 1b might make a big difference in his hitting too.

On top of everything else he had to cope with, his poor defense couldn’t have helped his confidence. He hit just fine for a 20 year old in AA, all things considered.

the five families had a meeting

early tuesday morning in an undisclosed location, presumed but not confirmed to have taken place in the basement of the former local known as jimbos.

larry was heard to have sat at the head of the table with the other representatives in attendance including 12-Knuckle Clemenza, Johhny two-times Tessio, Big Belly Bonasera, and Zucchini Breath Zahuchi. It has been rumored that these men worked into the mid morning Tuesday to work out a deal involving the families to stop the violence and keep the peace.

The last items of business that I am told took place at the meeting included an agreement that Moe Greene needed to be taken to rural florida and taught a lesson. (not sure what that entailed). Also, that Chooch Cicci in L.A. was to inform the studio heads that Johnnie Fontaine was to be given a starring role in the soon to be made Billy Beane/Moneyball movie.

LONDON (AP) — Former England players and coaches were downright delighted with the team’s draw for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
The 1966 world champion will face the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C.

Former England coach Terry Venables said that Friday’s draw was “as good as we could have expected.”

In Cape Town, England coach Fabio Capello called it “one of the more well-balanced groups,” and said his team would “have to be careful.”

England will open against the Americans on June 12 in Rustenburg, then face Algeria in Cape Town on June 18 and Slovenia in Port Elizabeth on June 23.

England is in fantastic form

which is why it’s nice for the US to get them first. I imagine both teams will be somewhat rusty. Getting a draw there would be a boon.

Still would much rather have England than Spain, Brazil or the Dutch. And the two other teams in Group C is about as good as you could’ve hoped for.

Certainly don't disagree with any of that

looking at it from a broader perspective, though, having a World Cup is better than not having a World Cup (at least in my opinion).

From a personal perspective, I’ve only been following the USMNT for a very short amount of time, but a few of the best sporting experiences I’ve ever had have taken place in the last six months. The bar that I was at for USA Mexico (at Mexico, mind you, the game the US lost) had an awesome atmosphere. Ditto being able to see the US clinch at Honduras. For whatever reason, these games are fun as hell, and the ones I were describing were just qualifiers. I can only imagine what it will be like in an even more pressure-packed situation.

If healthy -- and that's a big if -- the U.S. has IMO as much a chance as most of the 'second-tier' (perhaps third tier, depending on varying definitions) nation

A healthy U.S. squad would look something like:

Altidore – Davies
Donovan – Bradley – Jones – Dempsey
Cherundolo – Bocanegra – Onyewu – Spector

The addition of Jones is pretty huge — that holding/defensive middle spot has been a revolving door of sorts. A healthy Jones is likely one of the best players the US squad would feature. Davies is apparently progressing well but is still somewhat of a long-shot and Onyewu still has a lot of rehab left. The US isn’t a team that can stand too many injuries but at full-health they’ll be tough.

They addressed the issue in hockey, which makes flopping in the other two even more frustrating.

For some reason, there doesn’t seem to be as big a problem with that in college basketball. Maybe because they call more charging/traveling fouls, which is nice.

by MarketMaker on Dec 4, 2009 10:24 PM CST up reply actions

A big reason for it

I imagine, is that the NBA is a professional league and thus, people have higher expectations of the refs. I have equal expectations, but I reckon that just may be part of the reason.

Also, I feel like the NBA protects its superstars more than the NCAA

by jeeves on Dec 4, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

The star system does suck.

It makes sense to have higher expectations for the NBA refs, I’ve just never had them.

In regards to college refs, I’m not an expert since I don’t have a team to follow and the game doesn’t interest me. But, from the games I catch on ESPN or the tourney the refs act in a similar way. The better program gets the calls, floppers are rewarded with offensive fouls, and they often bog the game down by calling a ton of ticky-tack crap.

The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 5, 2009 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

Hmm -- I guess I'll stand up for the NBA

how is flopping any different than, say, a catcher in baseball taking a pitch that’s three inches off the plate and framing it?

Seems like you’re taking a spark-plug issue to justify dislike for something you’re not likely to have an affinity for in the first place. Which is fine, I guess, if just a little bit obnoxious. “I don’t like sport X*. I’m going to tell you why I don’t like sport X.” Great.

*although in your case it’s not basketball in general ’cause you seem to root for Mizzou to some degree.

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

Flopping is not grindy or brave.

Even Shaq went apeshit last year when SVG acused him of flopping against Howard (he blatantly flopped). Players don’t like it, either. Less than manly.

by soxshenanigans on Dec 4, 2009 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

One more thing...

I don’t like flopping either but I’m not sure how to solve that problem. I don’t pay too much attention to basketball forums but I think it’s been suggested that refs ought to call some type of foul on the flopper. I’m not sure giving the refs even more discretion is a good thing. I’d be inclined to systematically have refs stop calling fouls on plays like that — let play continue. The way that the charge is used in basketball kind of irks me. IMO the focus of a charging foul should be on the offensive player (isn’t it termed a “player control foul”?). If an offensive player is driving to the basket recklessly — head and shoulder down — it shouldn’t matter whether the defensive player has position.

As far as there being less flopping in college, I’m not sure that’s the case, either. I know this is only anecdotal so it’s a limited argument, but I saw for three years Dominic James use the flop as part of his arsenal. He would actually throw his shoulders and backside to the ground so forcefully that he’d slide several feet backwards.

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

I watch a lot of Big 12 and Big Ten hoops

It’s not nearly as bad. A lot of big physical frontcourt play, but the increased number of charging and traveling penalties decrease the need to flop to get attention.

But hell, in the NBA, at least they get right back up. Here’s how I would curtail it in soccer — if a player hits the ground and acts like he was mortally wounded, treat him like he’s mortally wounded. Carry him out on a gurney, put him on morphine drip.

I end up watching a lot of soccer and rugby because my favorite bar is a biergarten, and that’s all they have on the TVs. It’s something how different the acceptable reactions to pain are.

by Sox Machine on Dec 4, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

That's pretty reasonable

the writhing on the ground in pain only to get up a minute later is extremely obnoxious and I’m usually one to call it out when I see it. Even so, the game itself (when played at a high level) is more than enough to make up for the few instances when that does occur.

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 9:27 PM CST up reply actions

I really hate it too

I would be in favor of some sort of rule where if a player is “injured” or actually injured and the ball has to be kicked out so the player can get off his ass/actually be attended to then he has to wait a set amount of time before coming back in rather than after the first stoppage in play. I may be biased though as a holding midfielder/defender.

Extremely pumped for this, too

USA will get Canada in the opening group. That’s going to be equally awesome. I don’t know what would provide more personal utility — a win over Canada in hockey or a win over England in soccer.

would love to see a US win

Canada is gonna be stacked though. I think the US will have a better shot in the next go round, bunch of promising youngsters in Kessel, Kane, Parise, Booth, et al.

If not USA, Russia

Ovechkin – Datsyuk – Kovalchuk as a first line. And Gino Malkin on your second line. Good luck with that.

Nabakov, I'd guess

//checks to make sure Nabakov is Russian…

yep. It will also help if Markov recovers from injury in time. They’re certainly no where near as deep as Canada but I’d take their top guys over Canada’s.

It’s gonna be a blast, although I’m selfish in that I’d like to see as few Hawks playing as possible (Kane is in for sure, but I hope Canada leaves Toews and one of (if not both) Keith and Seabrook at home). And Hossa will dress for Slovakia (him and Gaborik on a line, that’s pretty sick).

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

yeah forgot about him

he’s having a really solid year. Bryzgalov is actually having a solid year too, wouldn’t be surprised if Khabby was #3 on the depth chart. I think Markov is supposed to be back late January(?) I may be wrong. I’d say the blueline is their only weakness, if you can call it one. I’m not sure how banged up Gonchar is, but if he and Markov aren’t 100%, they’ll have to rely on their forwards to do a lot of scoring.

regarding Hawks players

I read somewhere Byfuglien is getting serious consideration, I figured that can’t be right. I think Kopecky will also be suiting up for Slovakia. Also, I may be wrong, but Gaborik is Czeck, not Slovak/Slovene/whatever its called.

According to Wikipedia Gaborik was born in Czechoslovakia but is considered part of the Slovak national team

and yeah, I read that about Buff too. I’m not too worried about him, although the extra games may gas him a bit down the stretch. My worries are more injury related — I’d hate to see Kane get checked hard and sprain a knee/ankle.

The one thing I don’t like is that they apparently will not be playing on international sized rinks. The games I’ve seen on the bigger rinks are more enjoyable (completely subjective and JMO).

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

but yeah

that’s probably the best line you can put together. crosby, heatley, iginla/nash probably a close second

USA is young all the way around

even on defense — both Johnson kids and Bogosian. Rafalski is old but he can still bring it. The key is that Ron Wilson can’t go sentimental — Mike Modano shouldn’t make the roster (I’m not sure whether he was invited to their camp a few months back). Keith Tkachuk probably shouldn’t either. Let the young guys have their fill with a sprinkle of the old guys who can still play (Langenbrunner, among others).

by CWSKeith on Dec 4, 2009 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

agreed on Modano/Tkachuck

read a preview a few weeks back and was surprised Modano was even in the mix. Of course, that’s without checking to see how he’s played this season.

IMO the best we can expect from the Olympics for the US team is a good learning experience. Russia and Canada are going to be straight stacked.

Really pumped to see Foppa return for Sweden, supposedly he is still tearing it up

by 815Sox on Dec 4, 2009 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

Sweden will be very good -- probably as good a chance of winning gold as any non-Canada team

Very good defensively with King Henrik in net — that’s tough. The Sedins and Zetterberg make for an excellent top line, too.

And Finland usually brings it too, no? Not that they have elite talent but they seem to play well as a team.

The Angels are “working hard to trade Gary Matthews Jr. to clear money for other pursuits,” according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. With Matthews owed $23.5MM over the next two years if traded, it will be difficult for GM Tony Reagins to unload a significant portion of the contract.

A bit more to it though

Oh, I know...

Really, the whole racism thing was a dumb excuse in itself— I didn’t see any shirts being sold outside of Wrigley saying “Bradley mows my lawn” or anything of that nature. That’s not to say fans didn’t say anything to him, but fans everywhere will say something to you. Bradley’s as loose a cannon as they come.

well, this is a new one.

dude in the new york times is suggesting 2 reasons edgar martinez may deserve extra consideration for the hall of fame are:

First, he arrived in the majors late. The Mariners were committed to Jim Presley, so they did not make Martinez a starter until 1990. According to calculations by Dan Szymborski of Baseball Think Factory, Martinez’s minor league numbers in 1988 and 1989 suggest he would have accumulated 469 plate appearances at an O.P.S. 12 percent above average had he played in Seattle.

Second, Martinez played a perfectly good third base through 1992, and was relieved of his glove only to keep his bat in the lineup after a series of injuries. If Martinez is to be docked for being a D.H. in his later years, he needs to be credited for being a two-way threat early on.

interesting. i never thought of judging someone’s hall of fame credentials on their minor league career or giving them extra credit for playing defense for three years.

link

right, you get extra credit

for starting your career late if you were held back for non-baseball reasons. not because someone was better then you.
