Goodnight, Sweet Prince...Au Revoir, Dewayne
Thank you for supporting Baseball-Reference.com. We are writing to
let you know that your sponsorship of the following page will expire
in 7 days.Dewayne Wise ($10 to renew for 1 year)
Here lies Larry "Dewayne" Wise.
He came to us with high hopes, a willing attitude, and a grindiness so rarely seen in colored athletes. ;)
Today, I want to take a moment to formally bid him adieu.
In less than a week, my year of proudly sponsoring Dewayne will come to an expiring close. I have the option of renewing my sponsorship for even less than I paid for him last year; but since he'll be donning another team's colors in 2010, I am choosing to part ways with fond memories in my heart and a single tear slowly making its way down my cheek.
Dewayne Wise made Thursdays memorable.
Dewayne Wise made The Catch.
Dewayne Wise hit a PH grand slam off of Farnsworth with 2 outs in the 8th, on September 14th, 2008.
You may recall the night...Zambrano was pitching a no-no or something like that, whatever, who fucking cares :) and stole all the media's attention. Well, I haven't forgotten your September 14th, D-Wheezy. Your slam led us to win that game, therefore keeping us alive in the home stretch and leading us to take the division in 163 a couple weeks later.
Oh, and BA wouldn't have done that!
I raise my glass to Dewayne Wise!
And just for good measure, here's one final "Is this your homework, Larry???" from your loving sponsor of yesteryear: The PS.
Please sign your name or leave your favorite Dewayne moment in the comments.

"The Catch"
Without a doubt the greatest play by an outfielder I have ever seen.
piss up a rope fuckstick ...................by hoodlight
He cemented himself into White Sox history with one play.
As did Uribe with the final out(s) of 2005.
Don't the circumstances/context confirm what Mick posted?
I doubt there’s a greater catch, at least in Sox history.

Hard to top "The Catch".
I still marvel at the timing of the whole thing. Defensive replacement that inning, left-handed-ness (necessary), Billy Pierce, absolutely perfect speed and timing, The Juggle. If that is not proof there is a God, I don’t know what else could prove it.
Absolute perfection. And a horseshit gift from MB. D-Wise, you deserve better. Buehrle should sponsor you in perpetuity. Adieu.

10 years working hard in AAAA purgatory
Then put in a position to make one of the greatest catches in major league history. I think he got everything he deserved for the hard work he put in just by being in that position, any gift from Buehrle would have paled in comparison to what that probably did for his life.
He goes from being a guy no one has ever heard of to a guy who will be mentioned in perfect game lore for the rest of his life, Buehrle pitching a perfect 8 innings to put him in that position was his gift.

I can't disagree
After reading what I wrote.

I remember
that the fans turned on him before he even had an opportunity. Sure he was probably going to suck…. but at least give the guy more than 1 at bat…..its not like Anderson was any better. That was bad news…then everyone was on his knob after he saved buehrle’s day.
Kenwo4life=ratings
I'm talking as a starter. give the guy a fucking shot before you throw him under the bus
maybe he took steroids last winter….how do u know
Kenwo4life=ratings
huh?
he was 31 years old. starter, bench, who cares. you don’t magically become a good baseball player at 31.
well then blame the fucking idiot they have as a general manager
because Wise was the best option in camp… yah it was like being the tallest midget….but he was the best guy they had. The fans shouldn’t have turned on Wise before opening day and in the same time slob on williams knob. Williams was the dick wod that gave wise a guaranteed contract and was the guy that didn’t provide anyone in camp that was better than him. Wise did what he was asked to do- win the job in spring training.
Kenwo4life=ratings
I know what you meant. And I agree.

Gotta disagree on that...look at the spring training stats.
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
Dwise 20 70 9 20 4 3 2 10 36 1 15 3 1 .301 .514 .286
BA 24 69 12 20 0 0 4 9 32 9 14 0 1 .375 .464 .290
BA got on base more, had more HR, SO less, and played the OF better… Yeah, I was a BA fan… guilty secret.
Dwise’s horrid start sealed my disdain for the guy… O for the first 3 or 4 games?nothing personal, but I would have rather seen BA in every time Wise took the field. Except for the catch, but I think BA still woulda caught it (as unrealistic as that is)

Why have disdain for a bad player, and none for the guy who put him on the team?
No baseball team should have Dewayne Wise as their Opening Day centerfielder. Why the fans would boo someone they probably knew was going to suck makes no sense to me.

Always liked Dewayne and felt ashamed when he got booed on Opening Day. Also, before THE CATCH, there was the catch — that play he made against Detroit where he separated his shoulder and still threw the ball back. Great play and made for some great photoshops thanks to that one snapshot of him in agony that looked like his was laughing.

There was a home run in KC the last weekend of the '08. It made 162 v DET necessary, which made 163 v MIN necessary.
That. And the catch.
The Mitch. Family
2 great catches this year
the one in detroit when he blew out his shoulder (i think Qperman hit two dingers that game?) and the catch.

Sweet 2-out, 3-run homer in Game 1 of 2008 ALDS
Exciting moment that gave us the lead briefly in the 3rd inning
He came to us with high hopes, a willing attitude, and a grindiness so rarely seen in colored athletes
Did you refer to him as “colored athlete” what color is he, have to let you know this is a very derogatory discription of an African-american.
Tongue in cheek. There's even a winky-smiley next to it, for fuckssake.
We all know colored/black/brown/people of Africa/African-American players aren’t grindy.

by homesickalien on Dec 8, 2009 9:25 AM CST up reply actions
winky-smiley or whatever don't make it acceptable
you seem intelligent enough to make the point without the “colored” reference, now I could be toungue in cheek with, the reason african-american ballplayers don’t need to be grindy is they are gifted physically and are graceful by nature. But that ain’t always true and you know it,
What point? It was a joke. We have a long-established ability and tendency to laugh at race here (all races, including pasty-asses like me). Mainly because we are secure enough to figure out that we aren't actually racists just because we do.
Your taking offense to that is your issue.

thin skin,thick skin
colored is derogatory, that it’s okay to you does not make it ok to me, I like sarcasm as much as the next person, racism has nothing to do with this, I like to laugh and joke too, but this is over the line, maybe you don’t know.
Not over my line...
why dont you take your overly sensitive and whiny lines back to (insert name of contintent/landmass here).
If you like sarcasm as much as the next person perhaps you might appreciate my suggestion that Obama nominate you for the new post of Politically Correct Czar, so you can tell us all what is in taste and is not.

Jesus, you guys are mean! No need to be so upset about it; he/she's just conveying his/her opinion, even if it is one of sensitivity.
I personally can’t keep up with what each race prefers to be called these days, but I do know that “colored” is one of the least offensive joking words I could use to describe black people.

I am a big fan of this site
Let’s not get twisted, been a Sox fan since 1960, regular at old Comiskey, love the cleaverness and take no prisoners attitude that true Sox fans and southsiders are known for and I can take it, but I think that field here is for the most part is fair, and Colored is a bad term. Nobody probably meant any harm and I know that. Let us get back to tell it like it is, but know that it is hard to sarcastic and insulted at the same time.
tell it like it is?

Point made
What I did in making my point was targeted to the good people who will probably see things in a different way, did you think I was naive enough to think someone like you would not come out with these stupid cartoons and wild statements. Oh and believe me I have seen enough and heard enough of this garbage to last ten lifetimes so the shock value is gone.“GO Sox”
I think his point was made to the rest of us..
Especially those who have seen this episode. I’d say it went right over your head though.
by Grinder in Training on Dec 9, 2009 9:27 AM CST up reply actions
I hear your point, sugarbear. I did not hope to offend anyone with that statement, but I also won't apologize for it because it was in good humor and I do know the difference.
I hope you at least distinguish that some people’s “points” here are merely providing common examples of this sort of racial satire (like South Park’s “NAGGER” or my Robin Hood ref above, which is a joke made generalizing white people’s lack of athleticism) to prove that you can have a sense of humor about this sort of thing.
It’s not personal.
I know the difference between the generalization that “white men can’t jump” and the reality that “some white guys CAN jump!” Doesn’t mean I can’t laugh at the idea of it, right?
Especially when you consider that a lot of this humor is exposing and addressing these common prejudices, conceptions and assumptions found in our culture. It’s not ignorance at all.
I think thatshortkid said it best – “satirizing soft racism in the media…..”

thanks homesickalien, I completely agree with how you put this in perspective, I may have over reacted to the Colored thing, I feel good enough about your explanation to go back to what we do, Sox fans are hearty people, we don’t make excuses and we can take it. To everyone on this site “Go Sox”.
so when satirizing soft racism in media, don't use terms that embellish said soft racism. gotcha.
