On the leadoff:

"The one, and he's not a typical leadoff hitter, is Gordon [Beckham]. Gordon takes a lot of pitches there, he knows what he's doing, he's not going to panic. He can run a little bit, but I don't think he can steal bases the way we want him to, but I always say, the leadoff hitter, I don't care how many bases you can steal, you've got to be on base. I'd rather have a guy get on base than a guy that steals 100 bases, but is never there.''

"Last year, I think our leadoff hitter on Opening Day was Wise.''
Are the Sox the best team in division:

"On paper, I have the best five starters. The best team, I don't know. I think we can take a little bit advantage of Detroit because right now the player we most feared when we faced them was [Placido] Polanco. A lot of people talk about Cabrera, Magglio, Inge, but to me Polanco has hurt our ballclub a lot. Right now, we look pretty good.''

On Bobby Jenks trade rumors:

"Up to right now, Bobby Jenks is on our ballclub. Matt Thornton, yes he can [be the closer]. A lot of people don't believe that he can be a closer. I want to make it clear about Bobby - I said it a few weeks ago. When you have a body like Bobby, and you don't pitch well for one week, everyone thinks it's because you're big ... I don't want to say the name fat. But when you're good, no one looks at that. Not just Bobby, that's everyone.''

That was then and this is now.

Of course it “cuts it” for me. We had a better team then all around. But you can’t tell me you would rather have the 2010 perspective Bobby Jenks than a Decently combatant base running center fielder.

i’m going call out jenks for being fat. obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, all the bad stuff. the man has kids, so he should man up, lose some fucking weight if he wants to live a longer life so he can take care of his family.

i really don’t see any downside, for bobby (on a perspective of long term health) or the sox (on the perspective of bobby’s perceived trade value), for management’s previous criticism over his weight. it’s not like his value was hurt significantly by it. and if the training staff felt his weight puts him at more risk for injury, i’m inclined to believe them.

But what about Herm? And Kenny?

Why aren’t they setting an example for stupid young players? Do as I say, not as I do? Didn’t work with my generation, can’t imagine it’s any different today.
Herm especially. “Trainer” indeed.

Herm came running out, and Harry and Jimmy talked about all the weight he lost, and how svelte he looked.

He had a bit of leftover paunch to him, but relatively speaking, he was in outstanding shape.

i agree

Harry was quite lucid (esp compared to his Bud Man days), and Jimmy so damn honest (“you know, Rick Miller is not a good hitter”). Very entertaining.

And they seriously wet themselves when Fisk hit his homer.

Baines, my favorite childhood player, looked like a puma in right... I can't explain that puma comment. That's what it looked like, 'kay?... like a cat, paws up, chasing down balls like a puma snapping a sparrow out of mid-flight.

Also, watching that game, I officially became a “the game used to be better” OPOS, for lots of reasons. The batting stances didn’t look like they all came through the same school. The players didn’t look like they all game through the same weight training class. Nowadays, nobody looks like a puma… I could go on and on about it, but just remember this: I don’t want you on my fucking lawn.

on his weight. He gets hurt, it is because he is fat and doesn’t stretch. That is the common explanation. Is it entirely valid, no. But people without weight issues get injured at a lower frequency than those with weight issues.

The Time I Went To The Winter Meetings
Making for the door, however, I saw one last chance for a good story. Steve Phillips, still gainfully employed by ESPN, stood against a railing, looking into the stream. Realizing the potential hilarity of such a souvenir, I approached him and politely asked him to take a picture.

“Sure kid, one second.” He then pretended to get a call about Johan Santana getting traded in his headset, ran toward Buster Olney, strategically positioned by a garden gnome, and pointed toward me and whispered. Then, like girls on a playground, they both quickly scampered away. Incredulous that my opinion of Steve Philips could get any lower, I just stood there.

“You’re not going to let Steve Phillips get you down, are you?” Clay asked.

“No.”

“Good, he’s a dick.”

Yeah, I had a similar conversation last week elsewhere when some people were disappointed that I hadn’t projected Wieters to have an MVP season.

Young catchers will break your heart as surely as young pitchers do. The list of promising offensive catchers that regressed or didn’t develop is extremely long. Just off the top of my head, you have Ben Davis, Paulino, Alomar, Teagarden, Saltalamacchia, Valentin, Mathis, Petrick, Closser, and you can pretty much keep going. The physical demands of the position are very high.

In Flowers’s case, he’s not a polished, completed hitter in the way Victor Martinez is. He went through two levels in a season and slugged his way to a BABIP that he can’t sustain in the majors and a lot of strikeouts. I’m not saying Flowers is doomed or anything or a lousy prospect, simply that he’s probably not quite there yet. Catchers are like small-cap stocks.

I’m disappointed KW hasn’t gotten a veteran backup C yet. It’s probably one of the easiest positions to fill. Of the realistic options, I’d go for Barajas, Ausmus and J. Molina in that order.

by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 7, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

maybe, maybe not

I really feel like Flowers is ready to hit now. Assuming they don’t invest in a DH only type methinks his bat might make its way into the lineup a little more often then typical buster backup catcher.

by stanchar on Dec 7, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

he's got to catch versus lefties

he’d DH, if at all, against RHP. and remember that league average hitting at DH is replacement level DHing. .234/.324/.375 is the ZiPS/CHONE average and that’s against RH and LHP

physical therapy works wonders

I busted the labrum in my left shoulder. it got kicked, I heard a wonderful crunch/pop. I couldn’t roll onto that side to sleep for 2 months, I’d wake up in pain if I did. finally went to PT and 6 weeks later… almost perfect.

I didn’t get an MRI, but the XRays showed that the gap between the ball and socket in my shoulder was consistent all the way around, so if there is a tear (highly probable), its small.

best part: I didn’t need to take any time off of work. just cost me my lunch break 2x a week for 6 weeks. And yes, its still fine. Its weaker then my good shoulder, but eh. That’s the same with or without surgery. but it only takes 2 weeks of doing the exercises again to get back to full strength. check it out if you can. totally worth it.

I just don't see anyway that KW can risk not getting another semi-legit "middle of the order"

bat…….Quentin is by no means a sure thing after 2008 and Rios will definitely be better (or at least we hope)……….they really need to find a reliable RBI guy IMO

by stanchar on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

I guess there is a scenario although extremely remote where the White Sox get involved

with Holliday……….I guess if Boston trades for AGON….then you are really only talking about outspending Saint Louis……they’d have to dump either Jenks/Konerko……..again extremely remote.

by stanchar on Dec 7, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

It's really pointless to pay attention to what Ozzie says is going to be his OF......

he doesn’t really know a whole lot more than us as to what KW is up to.

by stanchar on Dec 7, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

The main thing to take from this is that they are, in fact, willing to move Quentin to RF

I thought they’d be hesitant on moving him to the slightly more difficult defensive spot, given his issues in LF as well as his health (or lack thereof).

his def #'s in RF are significantly better

sure they were before any injuries, but he may be more comfortable in that spot. Plus, he can’t be any worse than JD, so he’s got that going for him, which is nice.

true

but I was referring more to all the tweets, rumor sites, rosenthal, heyman, olney…it is getting out of hand. A guy hears a rumor in the hotel lobby and he puts it on his twitter page immediately and then it is shot down 35 seconds later….getting insane.

If you read MLB Trade Rumors you’ll notice that the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox are interested in every free agent out there and also looking at trades with 24 teams.

Thank god for Cowley.

ok. let's share stories around the campfire

player you got most excited about, but he failed to produce.

it was a cold january day in 1989. on my way home from high school — 3:15 sports report on WBBM newsradio 78, dave eanet reports the sox have acquired eddie williams for joel davis.

williams was a #4 pick overall and once considered one of the top prospects in baseball. after a couple of years failing to stick in the majors, the tribe decided to give up on him. larry himes, you sir are a genious.

however, williams failed to pan out. his hitting was OK but his 3B defense was bad. he emerged briefly a few years later with the padres, suspiciously larger than he had ever been before.

by Hatchetm on Dec 8, 2009 12:04 PM CST reply actions

A fun game to play around a campfire is to tell each person the thing you admire most and the thing you like the least about him/her

We did it once while camping in Michigan and it was fun and eye-opening. Naturally, all the guys came away from it better friends while all the girls were pissed at each other for awhile afterward.

Doesn't really change this year...

Or even the future that much, I mean 4 / 5 million per for a guy in his prime who can play multiple positions wouldn’t be hard to move after next year if one our of guys pans out at 3B. This shouldn’t really change anything for us, just more certainty for both sides.

I guess I'll take that..

Tigers get some young talent but looks like they had to lower their demands, and should at least help the Sox in the short term.

Still rather see Granderson play just about anywhere else but there, but at least it’s not the AL Central anymore I guess.
