Juan Uribe is on the Twins radar.
An option at 3B. Kenny should sign Jazz Hands just to have him around.

Yahoo! Sports was the first to report, via Twitter, that Wolf and agent Arn Tellem had accepted Milwaukee’s offer. Other reports followed, including one in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, saying Wolf is guaranteed about $29 million. Other reports on the value of the contract’s first three years ranged from $27 million to $30 million.

Ok, here’s the deal with Matsui. He has been cleared by doctor to play outfield and DH. Out of loyalty, he will wait for Yanks to say yes or no. Then come Jan. he will listen to Sox. Slow process, but could happen. Sox are atop his list after Yanks said Multiple sources. Sox could go out to Cali next week and meet with him to check the knee in person.

Also from his twitter.
The good news for the Sox is Matsui told the Japanese media that its not about money or years, its about opportunity to play some OF.

I was suggesting Teahan would play 3b and 2b at the same time. He’d be slightly below average at both, but it would free up a fourth player for the outfield.

"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
yeah, was looking at his #'s this morning.
+ defender, decent average. sucks against lefties though. wouldn’t be a bad guy as a fall back plan.
A Chruch/Andrew Jones
platoon in LF makes some sense I guess with a signing of Matsui to DH………makes a lot more sense if we could make that Quentin/Crawford deal happen.
I imagine Kenny would be more willing to let H Matsui play a little LF if he had Rios and Crawford as his other 2 OF’s…..
It seems as though I'm in the minority....
but I would not trade quentin for Carl Crawford. Nope.
I'm with ya
All things being equal Crawford is more valuable than Q. But all things aren’t equal. Crawford is making 10 million and is a free agent next year who is likely to require at least 16 mill a year to sign an extension. Q is under team control for at least 3 years and will make a relative pittance this year. I’ll stick with Q.
Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of.
I ususally love you guys.
But now I have to turn my back on you. Take this and go.

Crawford for a year, with Mitchell in the wings, sounds darned good to me. I (blasphemy to follow – avert your eyes!) am not enamored of Q any longer.
There. I said it.
"don tink about new jork. jus come in ready to wing de gay."
That's fine.
But let’s get a suitable replacement, then.
Well, Q's the only player who has a chance at killing Greinke.
Before Greinke wins another Cy Young.
The world needs the Jedi now more than ever
Not only that.
Carl Crawford’s value is overestimated here. I like him. He’s good. Steals bags and plays good LEFT field defense. So-so power. Very pedestrian OBP. aND He’s also got a couple years on Q, no? I’ll take my chances still with Q, even given his tough luck with injuries. Also, if we made that swap….what are we becoming……the ‘85 Cardinals….in our park? I know I’m exaggerating a wee bit….but, you get my point.
outfielders are outfielders
where they play their good/bad defense is determined by management, not some inherent skill set

there may have been
possibly related to comfort and injury. changing positions is apparently a risk indicator. but in terms of capacity beyond that risk, he’s not lacking.
toward the general point, tango has studied this at length.

You don't know that.
I swear I’m not making this up….but I’m almost sure in saying there were people in the know that don’t believe he is particularly good in center.. Why the hell would you waste a gut like him in left-field ALL these years otherwise?
it's not a waste
if the opportunities to leverage it are outweighed by the risk. with upton in center it makes no sense at all. runs are runs are runs, regardless of position after adjustment.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing. - Trooper
Maybe because Baldelli was so good?
"his ballerness could not be stoped which rose his era to 5.42 "
I thought of that, and I don't buy it.
Crawford don’t look as good in center. I know our eyes deceive us and fielding metrics back it up, but he has actually always looked awkward to me, even in left. He’s not all that smooth, and I think he’d have a hell of a time adjusting to center. Anyway, I know it’s very arguable, but give me Quentin for this team right now.
2007 was the last terrible year they had in CF
and they’ve only begun actually competing since ‘08. if you’re going to be making moves that aren’t going to net much more than a win if that, you better be competing.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing. - Trooper
offhand, i don't know
Crawford is probably 1 WAR expected better than Quentin on average, but he makes twice the salary and will be a free agent next year. and Q certainly has some decent upside.
fwiw, the Fans project Crawford as a 5 win player. that’s a sweet bargain for 10M.

Doesn't quite apply to the Yankees does it?
“You always want to get younger, especially when you have an older team,” Cashman said. “But I want to be better. So you just have to get younger with the right people.”
Isn’t it just as well for them if they stay relatively “old” and stick to 28-35 year old superstars as opposed to their own generally overrated prospects? Always get younger might work for everyone else, but not the Yanks.

i hope this team doesnt get crisp, pierre or matsui
getting crisp or pierre would be pointless when you can get a much cheaper, similar production scott podsednik, although i would not like to give him a deal either. it would be sick if we got BJ Upton but thats not gonna happen. we would be utterly fucked if we have beckham or anyone else on the team now to be the leadoff hitter. I would like to see an attempt for Vlad for DH and a little RF and i dont know the possibilities of that, we probably have a shot.
all those guys are bad (cept matsui)
but I would say crisp is marginally better than pods and much better than pierre. he’s been injured so he would come cheaper, as well.
matsui is good but expensive.

I don't get the aversion to Crisp
a healthy Crisp is not a bad player, especially if you can get him for only $3-4 million. He’s just about a league-average bat. His value really comes on the defensive end — ZiPS has his career UZR/150 in LF at 23.5. Even if you don’t buy him being that good and instead peg him at +10, that’s still something approaching an average player.
I’m not seeing much better values as far as FA outfielders go. Byrd is going to get (at least) two years at a higher AAV than Crisp. We probably can’t afford Cameron and even if we could, he wants to play CF. The Sox need value in whatever form they can get it. If that’s mostly by making the Sox a superb pitching and defense team with an average (probably stretching it) offense, so be it.
agree, Crisp is a slight upgrade from Pods and younger.
I’d go $2.5m for Pods and maybe $4m for Crisp, providing he is 100% after his surgery last year.
piss up a rope fuckstick ...................by hoodlight
Church wouldn't be awful, especially considering he's not likely to get more than a one year, $2-3 million deal
I think I like Crisp better though. Offensively Church is probably a little better, especially in the offensive department. But Crisp is just such a good defender. He’s also likely to be quite a bit better on the basepaths than Church is.
This, again, is all dependent on two things:
- the Sox are okay with Crisp’s medical reports.
- Crisp comes cheaply — two years max and wouldn’t go much higher than a base salary of $4 million.
Christ -- it's been a long day
that should read: “Offensively Church is probably a little better, especially in the offensive OBP department.”
crisp is coming off significant surgery
i would not assume he magically returns to his career peak.
T pena
If we were to sign putz does it not become a possibilitiy that t pena becomes a non-tender? Isn’t he arbitration eligible….I would think he’d get a couple mil or so….

first year arbitration eligible relievers who aren’t closers are generally between 800K and 1.2M.
Kenny says STFU, MEDIA! ummm...in more words....
link
INDIANAPOLIS — Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams was in a sullen mood as he expressed the idea that media reports in his team’s interest in J.J. Putz and Hideki Matsui has affected his team’s chances of getting deals done.
“We thought we had something going on,” Williams said. "But as I told you guys many times, when something becomes public to a large degree, the entire game changes, and more times than not, you’re not going to get a deal.
“Something we thought we might have been a little closer on be came public and now it’s not so close
Williams most likely was upset about a story written on Tuesday in this blog about Putz. The rehabbing right-handed pitcher has worked out for at least seven or eight teams so far, and that number might go to 12 or 14 before the process ends when Putz shuts down his workouts on Friday.

I've gone a couple of times
They’ve got player t-shirts and jerseys, some autographed stuff, Christmas ornaments, hats, etc, etc. It’s kind of fun just because you get to walk around in an area that the public doesn’t normally see.
Last year I got one of those playoff hooded sweatshirts for (I think) $25. Looks like this, only it says “2008 MLB Playoffs” under the “White Sox” part.
Also last year they were allowing people to go up into the visitors dugout during the daylight hours, but I missed that because it was dark by the time I got there. I don’t know if they’re going to do that again this year.
