Goddamn music thread

Star-divide

Aside from drinking several bottles of champagne last week after my defense, I hit Twisted Village and bought a few records:

Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-6 - excellent nigerian pop comp with hints of psych, blues, garage. I'm really digging this!

Faust - Faust - Now I have the first two records on vinyl. More krautrock please.

Godspeed You Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞ - I think I'm one of the few that likes this album better than Lift Your Skinny Fists...

Tropicália: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound - I was looking for some old Caetano Veloso records and found this. The usual suspects including Tom Ze are on this.

What have you been listening too lately?

I get it.

You don’t like an album so you pigeonhole people who do like it. Funny joke.

Also you are mixing stereotypes a bit. The stoner/Phish fan is not exactly a very tight overlap with the hipster/Pitchfork crowd that typically support Animal Collective

lately they've been strange bedfellows

but i see your point.

also its a fine album, a couple really great songs. its crossover appeal is probably pretty worrying to some fans of this previously “niche” band. you won’t be able to walk down a dorm hall this spring without my girls coming from at least two rooms.

all i’ve been listening to lately is depressive black metal. i think its coloring my worldview.

Los Campesinos in Madison were very good, and they'll be coming to Milwaukee in early April.

Other things…

- Anyone hear any of the new Arctic Monkeys stuff? There’s some not-so-great (quality-wise) live stuff on YouTube and although it’s a small sample size (a handful of songs), they seem… ‘darker’. It’s definitely a change from their past stuff.

- I’m pretty sure The Strokes are heading back to the studio very soon, so I’m anxiously awaiting any word on a new album from them.

Blake from Jawbreaker

has a new band called “Thorns of Life”. The few songs that have showed up on YouTube sound great—think late period Husker Du if you’re not familiar with Jawbreaker.

Jay Reatard’s Matador Singles compilation is good too.

Download a sample of songs from Ben Broussard's CD

http://www.benbroussard.com/audio/AudioSnippet.mp3

Ben demonstrates his passion for music with the release of his musical debut. With everyday life and relationships as his inspiration, Ben wrote the lyrics in hotel rooms while traveling across the country playing professional baseball. The album, produced by Scott Schorr of Lazy Bones Recordings, features Ben’s talent for playing the guitar, singing, and the unusual beat box on “Deep”.

i've been listening the hell out of 36 Chambers

and re-listening to all my Pavement. decided once and for all that Malkmus’ S/T album has like two really good songs afaic and the rest is forgettable. Lots of Built to Spill, Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du, Guided By Voices and New Pornographers. Dylan too. Since the last music thread, I’ve been having it pretty good, music-wise.

they’re both stand alone records, and II was the first puppets album i heard, but i think II comes off as more retro, less original sounding (country punk etc) than up on the sun. you can get back to me when you get around to listening. they could only go down artistically after that album…

Speaking of 36 Chambers...

anyone have any early-to-mid 90s rap ‘must have’ CDs? I’ve got a lot of random stuff but I don’t know if I’ve found a hip-hop CD that can hold its own with 36 Chambers. Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Paid in Full, Ready to Die and Return to the 36 Chambers would (in no specific order) be my next class, but anyone have any recommendations on anything else?

And I don’t want to force Los Campesinos down everybody’s throat but the title track off their second album ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’ has a whole lot of awesome.

now you're in my wheelhouse

I liked 36 chambers but no way is it the best rap album ever. An * means I liked these better than the Wu-Tang debut:
Eric B. and Rakim – Paid in Full*
Ice Cube – AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted* – his first solo and easily his best, Death Certificate is good, too.
3rd Bass- the Cactus album and Derelicts of Dialect – on the verge of a white rapper breakthrough until Vanilla Ice came along and set our people back a decade.
L.L. Cool J-Radio* (1985), Bigger and Deffer (1987), Walking with a Panther (1989), Mama Said Knock You Out* (1990)- by 1990 he had too much dough and his music got really weak.
~Look for a single with EPMD called ‘Rampage’, its great
The D.O.C.-No One Can Do It Better* – produced by Dre, the whole album is good, especially ‘the Grand Finale’ featuring NWA.
Slick Rick- The Great Adventures of Slick Rick*
Common Sense- Can I Borrow a Dollar?- Before he dropped the sense, his first album and probably the first good rap to come out of Chicago. Breaker 19 is solid, and theres a remix with the Beatnuts that I played the crap out of back then but dont know if you can find anymore.
Funkdoobiest- Which Doobie U B? I saw them at the Aragon with Cypress Hill and House of Pain in about 92, still one of my favorite shows.
   Biz Markie
Goin Off- his 1st album featuring the Vapors- that joint ruled the streets, Im telling you.
EPMD – any one of their first three(Strictly Business, Unfinished Business, Business as Usual) the whole albums arent great, but there are definitely some jams on there.
Deep Cover Soundtrack – Snoops very first song is on there.

The Chronic, Doggy Style and Midnight Marauders are all good.

Out of print stuff probably hard to find:
Marley Marl- the Symphony- not sure the album but heres the video
The Coup -self titled (Repo Man is a must have track)*
A.M.G. – Bitch Betta Have My Money*

anyway these are the essentials if you want street cred circa 1989-1994.

I haven't gotten into a new album for months.

I’ve picked up quite a few 7"s that have me excited for some albums coming out in the coming months though. Obits (as stated above), Jacuzzi Boys, and Medication (not sure if an album is impending though) to name a few. Oh, and I just rembered I have actually been listening to the new Wavves album called Wavvves. But it hasn’t been legally released yet.

And I need to start doing my homework before South By Southwest, since I’m finally going down to Austin for four days of music bombardment!!!

Recently got really into them. I heard a song about six years ago on Sirius that I wasn’t overly impressed by, so I wrote them off completely. After hearing their entire discography, I have no idea what it was I heard – possibly “Our Coastal Hymn”. My music tastes are (d)evolving.

I saw Fucked Up a couple weeks ago at a tiny Baltimore club. Not as good live as I would have expected.

And I picked up Pavement’s Nicene Creedance reissue of Brighten the Corners. So I have been listenting to that a lot lately.

Not a big fan of any of their albums, but they are incredible live. Saw them a few years ago @ the Troubadour. Their lead singer is absolutely insane – in a good way. Emptied cups of beers on his head, took off his shirt and started gyrating wildly, his big belly flopping everywhere, lassoed his mic, forced the crowd to sing, and tried to climb the walls to get onto the balcony. All while his band kept playing, as though nothing were happening.
